Hello all! My name is Toni. I turn 26 on the 18th August and Darwin, Northern Territory is my home. In 87 days I am embarking on the trip of a lifetime! Very excited!! Pretty darn nervous too, but I think that's good!! At midnight on the 25th July, I fly to Sydney to spend some time with my Brother & his family, and also a good friend of mine. Then on the morning of August 2nd, I depart from Sydney (On Vietnam Airlines!) bound for Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), where I will have 7 hrs to have a look around, then off to Paris just before midnight. I'll have a couple of hours to get a grip on the Paris airport, which will be very helpful as I will definitely be returning there. Then ... read more

The top-end of down under...a place like NO other! As the big red-orange ball slowly sets on Australia’s Top-End horizon, it sinks and gradually dissolves out of sight. The warm tropical sea breezes blow the coconut tree palms softly as families picnic nearby on the northern foreshore by the Timor Sea. Darwin Australia - the top-end of the land down under. Also known as the Gateway to Asia, Darwin is located on latitude 12 south, meaning it’s very hot 9-months of the year, and just right for 3-months, or better known as the wet and dry season. Cyclones out in the sea bring the tropical rains & flooding. I’m hearing down south there is drought and fires, and they are much hotter than we are at times. We usually have our temps in the 30’s Celsius ... read more

Yes its true. My days in this giant landmass are finally ending. We had a few extra days in the city of darwin...which for the joe's should maybe ring a bell....as it was an important city in WW2. It was bombed several times trying to fend off the asian menace.... But anyway...we have made the best of this time. For the first time in my tender life...I have partaken in a Free Beach....which you may know as a nude beach. Lara had done this in Brazil and I needed to even the scales, so we went. The name free beach is actually a nicer name for it...because thats how it feels to be galavanting around in the buff.....Free. The beach was pretty empty...so it wasnt too weird either. The best part is that I didnt burn ... read more

I saw Darwin as an ideal starting point for my trip around Australia, bearing in mind that May until October is the dry season when there is little or no rain and temperatures peak at 32C. From November to April, temperatures average 33C with high relative humidity and heavy rainfall (406mm of rainfall in January). This makes access to many of the territories natural wonders very difficult as the access roads are buried under water! After insuring and registering a 4WD van for the year, Michael (a Swiss backpacker) and myself would leave Darwin for the township of Katherine taking in a trio of major attractions en route. I had met Michael in the Chillis backpackers in Darwin (www.chillis.com.au) were he had been looking for a companion to do a two day canoeing trip ... read more

The following is a Six Day Combined Entry detailing my time spent in Darwin and Kakadu National Park from September 11th-September 16th. Day One A line in an Elliot Smith song goes, "Happy and sad go in quick succession." That is never more true than when you are traveling. Last night was a battle with uncomofortability, a cold/cough, the top bunk, and restlessness and not wanting to wake up my roommates. This morning I was still sick. The lock to my room wouldn't work. I didn't have any drugs or soap, and I couldn't get any money changed at first. And as a result of having no sleep I walked around like a zombie. I grabbed myself a lunch of barramundi and chips in order to make it through the day. There is a sense of ... read more

I arrived back in Darwin and saw the place in a whole new light. Obviously, I was not in the mood to appreciate the place last time, but this time I really got to like the place, very much like Alice Springs. It's not too big, but not too small; not too quiet, but not too noisy; not too cramped, but not too spread out. The weather was beautiful and the general philosophy was to chill-out, relax and enjoy life. Did you know that they consume more alcohol per head in Darwin than anywhere else on earth. That doesn't mean however that it's a town of alcoholics, far from it in fact, drinking is a social thing and Darwin is a very sociable place. I met an Australian girl on the bus called Sarah who was ... read more

Dempasar airport was a pitiful excuse and consisted of little more than a hut and a runway. Darwin was pretty much the same. Customs and immigration was not that much of an ordeal, which surprised us, but they were extremely hot on quarantine. We had to fill out a questionnaire in the plane about everywhere that we had been and everything that we had been doing. They then sprayed the plane with something before any of us were allowed to get off. You then got more questions in the terminal and they wanted to check anything you were carrying that was made from wood or straw. All the presents that we had got in Dempasar required a considerable amount of study before we were able to proceed. Alan had some sandwiches which he had bought in ... read more

May 27, Wednesday. Had a bit of a look around Darwin. Sent another batch of transparency’s back to Melbourne and wrote a letter to the children. I’m now travelling with an English girl that I met at Catherine. English girls seem to be everywhere in Darwin. Didn’t do any filming while I was in town. Went for a meal with Linda and headed back to the caravan park around 7:30. Spent the rest of the evening writing postcards and letters. ... read more
