October 18th Tuesday Off to Alice Perth airport for flight to Alice Springs. Short queues and lovely place to wait but Internet not working. I have really enjoyed Perth and Western Australia but am excited to be going to 'The Alice' as it is known in Oz. I have always wanted to visit...maybe Neville Shute has something to do with it. The plane was quite small and we were seated in row 1. Lots of legroom but not much luggage storage space. The take off was almost silent, a weird sensation. Great view of Ayers Rock (Uluru) from the righthand windows. 75% of the passengers moved to the righthand side of the plane to take a peak. Thankfully this did not make the plane tip over although it looked like it should! Car ready for us. ... read more

Amazing trip! I had nowhere to live for a week, so I decided to go to Alice Springs and onwards to the Outbacks to see the famous ROCK. Got so much more! 17 people, three days, hiking the area around Uluru. We walked for about 10 km every day, with spectacular views and sleeping under the clear sky, in swags. The first day we left Alice Springs early, early in the morning. We stopped for a small camel ride beofre continuing on towards Uluru. Amazing that it is actually a huge boulder, not a mountain! Took us almost two hours to walk around it. Some of the people climbed the Rock, but I chose to walk the base, since it is a holy place for the Aboriginies. At sunset we gathered for a plastic mug of ... read more

- PEOPLE: Doddery old bus driver; many more Aboriginal people - AREA: Small ghost town with lots of tourist tack - WEATHER: Blistering heat (at last!) Mon 5th: Woke up at 6.15 just in time to see sun rise - a strip of deep red and then the glowing sun. The landscape was red sand with a lot more trees than I was expecting - big patches of them followed by little shrubs. A bit like the South American desert but much more colourful. Midday arrived along with Alice Springs. My hostel pick up wasn't there so I hooked up with Caiterina, the German girl who I'd been envious of the whole trip as she had the 2 seats to herself, and we caught a bus into town. That was quite an experience - the frail ... read more

On Thursday, after watching the sun rise onto Spring, we travelled the 800km Donahue-Plenty highway from Boulia to Alice Springs, skirting the top of the Simpson Desert and visiting NO towns on the way. Mid-morning we crossed into the Northern Territory (and set our clocks back 30mins). The highlight of the day (except for the awesome nothingness) was finding a Thorny Devil. The lowlight was meeting the most extreme flies we've even had to suffer poking in our noses, ears and eyes! We arrived late evening for dinner in Alice. The next day we walked into town, climbed Anzac Hill for comprehensive views and then visited some of the historic buildings including taking a tour around the Royal Flying Doctors Service base and marvelled at the completely dry Todd river.... read more

well hello there everybody! so i made it to alice springs! it's absolutely totally completely and utterly in the middle of no-where. maybe i should start believing my lonely planet guide book... ah, and its nice and hot - oh the novelty of wearing cropped trousers, strappy tops and birkenstocks! yay! (this is more like it...) had to get up at like 6.00am on wednesday morning to finish off packing and get to the airport in time, nick gave me a lift which saved on the headache of me trying to catch a bus. (me and public transport in australia, not a good combination. i believe that we have established this now.) the flight was absolutely fine and even though it was 2 and a half hours, after the evil evil 22 hour flight to get ... read more

Hello to all my travel fans (a but hungover today will explain more later!) Just finished the best 7 days of my life, seen many things that I will probably never see again and met cool people. This is a very very very long Blog. Photos at LinktoPhotos We'll start with Day Uno (1) - Tues: Was picked up by the tour company at 6.45am from Adelaide. South Aus is the wine capital of the world and we drove through lots of winerys in Clare Valley. It reminded me of Surrey with the green fields and hills. Drove further into the Flinders Ranges and had lunch at a gorge, saw Yellow footed Rock Wallabies, called because they have yellow feel, live on the rocks and are wallabies! Got chatting to the other 8 people on the ... read more

We're just back from a fantastic 3 days in the outback visiting Australia's most iconic attraction - Uluru, or Ayres Rock as it's commonly known, as well as the Olgas and King's Canyon, and experiencing a bit of outback life, and it was great! We started from Alice Springs very early on Monday morning, as Uluru is a 5 hour drive from Alice. Our first afternoon was spent doing the base walk around the rock; the local Aboriginal tribes discourage people from climbing it as it's a sacred site to them, but plenty of people still do the climb. We decided not to partly out of respect for the locals, and partly because it's bloody steep and we weren't sure that we were feeling that energetic! The base walk was enough exercise for the first day! ... read more

What a nice sleep in! Lazy day in Alice Springs. Cook, eat, sight seeing. It was so nice to be able to sleep in and not have to be ready by 6AM this morning! Especially knowing the next three days I'll have to be ready by 5AM. UGH! But it'll be worth it since Kings Canyon and Uluru will be in the cards. That’ll be two nights of camping out under the stars. We’ll be sleeping in something called a swag. I haven't seen one myself yet but have been told that it is sort of like a self contained sleeping "unit" with inflatable mattress and you insert a sleeping bag and the cover can close up over you. So it'll be nice to be able to sleep under the stars at night. Our guide yesterday ... read more

Deserted Outback. Another cattle station. Big open dirt roads. 05:20 Wake up. 06:00 Set off and on the road of darkness. Geesh! Boulia looks exactly the same as when we arrived in the darkness of night last night. 06:35 Still dark out there. Just before 7AM Sunrise! It’s simply amazing watching the sky turn partially red and orange. 07:58 We cross the Georgina River on the Donahue Highway. When there's flooding in the area the highway is flooded as well and access to the Donahue Highway is shut off. 08:12 We stopped for "nothing." Again it was amazing to look all around and there was literally nothing to be seen. 09:33/09:03 Crossing over the Queensland/Northern Territory border. The Northern Territory time zone is 30 minutes behind. Time to adjust the old watch. I take the opportunity ... read more
