Just to give you an idea of Alice Springs, the temperature the week was there, never dropped below 40...... At night, in our soooo NOT air conditioned van, as a cool early 30's.......to say sweat was aparrant is an understatement. Never has it been possible to get a sweat on when just getting out of bed!!! How people live in this heat is beyond us!!! Still, a lovely town, considering we are smack in the middle of the country.... read more

Hi all, Just a quick update as we haven't had chance to use the internet recently as doing lots of travelling. We are now at Alice Springs, having trvaelled since our last update through Melbourne, along the Great Ocean Road, to Adelaide, then the dreaded Northern Territory Road. Going through Coober Pedy (Weirdest Place in the world) to the Ayres Rock, Kings Canyon, now to here. So far we have travelled just short of 6km, in a month! Going to spend a few days here relaxing, in a cool 44 degree daily heat. Will update with pictures shortly. L & L... read more

Hi everyone, Thanks for the comments Margery and Helen. Of course the prospect of returning to the lovely beaches and sun of the mighty O.T is something I'm rubbing my hands in anticipation about!! So...here Iam in Alice Springs after a 1700km drive down from Darwin. Darwin was a tad disappointing actually, very very quiet due to the wet season. The humidity was pretty tough going aswell but something that I'll remember for a long time is Kakadu National Park which is one of the best things ive done so far. I never thought I'd hold a Water Python around me but I did, and I never thought I'd stroke a 6ft crocodile on the back (it was with a rod of course), but I did. This was a real treat because the organisers from my ... read more

Phew....man, has it been a crazy few days on this Outback tour; i STILL can't believe all the things we've managed to pack into such a short time period, no doubt i'm gonna be tired for a long time to come!!! It's hard to know where to begin, but i suppose day 1 (20th Jan) is a good place to start...... I was picked up relatively early and chucked onto a mini bus of strangers...for the next 7 days these guys were to become my travelling buddies and good friends!!! Fortunately for me, i already knew Nikki (i'd met her on the previous day's Wine Valley Tour) and she seemed really friendly, and i met Claudia whilst waiting for the bus to pick us up - so far so good! We began our journey, on our ... read more

Now that i am travelling alone, i seem to have a preoccupation with meeting other people, this has stemmed a bit from an email i received from Cal (the guitarist who i met in New Zealand) who said that meeting others is the most rewarding part of travelling. Therefore on my first day in Alice Springs i was looking to talk to people and try to latch on to them a bit (god, I'm insecure). Anyway i met a few people who all seemed to range from coming across as fine to annoying. However the people i met that i really did like were a British couple called Jo and Rich. They are in their mid thirties and have been travelling on and off (but mostly on) for three years and are two and a half ... read more

We arrived at about midday into Alice Springs train station, climbing off the train down some steps onto a dusty 'platform'. The heat was intense, about 45 degrees, but this is to be expected in the Northern Territory this time of year. We jumped in a taxi and headed straight to the YHA in town. This is probably one of the tattiest hostels we have stayed in- it was like an air raid shelter with a corrigated iron roof and dodgy little windows. So we decided to head out and have an explore around town, which wasnt actually as big as we thought it would be. We saw lots of Aborigines, which is something we hadn't seen in the other parts of Australia we've visited. Anzac Hill was a good vantage point to look out over ... read more

Apologies people for my rather slack attitude of late. I will blame this in part on spending much of the last few weeks in the middle of nowhere, where internet, should it exist at all, tends to be fairly expensive. Some of you might know that my plans did not involve heading in to the red centre, but i am very glad i changed my mind. Travelling through the outback was a fantastic experience, and now i am considering shortening my time on the east coast even more, and heading back into the wilderness for a while. It has been three weeks since i left civilisation (unless you include Alice Springs as civilisation), and being back in a big city (and a very touristy one at that) feels a little stange. So i headed off from ... read more

Well, we were all excited to see the Outback, but were dreading the heat.....it was definitely in the 120s before we got there, and only supposed to be hotter.....we got there one night and didn't have much rest time before our two day tour group picked us up at 5 am. We loaded the van and headed to King's Canyon, one of the main attractions. Driving in this part of Australia was really cool, we wouldn't see any cars for the longest time and it literally was desert the whole way with maybe a couple gas stations every 100 miles or something. When we got to the canyon we were supposed to do like a 7 mile hike, but of course it was closed due to extreme temperatures.....we got to the second lookout which gave us ... read more

Once it was what the name is telling you, a place to find water on the lang way south. Later on it became an important telegraph station and planes were made to connect it to Adelaide at the south coast via a railway line. Today Alice is still not a big city (around 30,000 residents) but it´s clearly a tourist destination. People come here visit the 'Red Center´ of Australia and to experience Aboriginal culture. Nowhere else can you buy so many digeridoo and other Aboriginal stuff. For Backpacker that do not jet around Australia it´s the hub for a visit to Ayers Rock. When I arrived and steped out of the Ghan I found it to be faitly pleasant concerning the weather. The locals said that they had had quite a lot of rain and ... read more
