While I was making my way from Adelaide to Alice Springs, I met a Brit who told me about a joey rescue center in Alice where you got to hold baby kangaroos. This guy's voice and face changed as he described his visit, kind of like a little girl face's when she's holding a kitten. I had very limited time in Alice Springs but the rescue center became a priority. I got there in the evening after the center closed, left the next day for a three day camping trip, and flew back to Sydney around 11 A.M. the moring after I got back to Alice from the camping trip. I figured I had about an hour for the joeys befor I had to get a cab to the airport. I got to the center about ... read more

I'm currently about 35,000feet above Alice Springs, heading North with nearly three hours to go before I reach Denpasar, Bali. Still rather terrified about customs and the nightmare stories I've heard, but I guess you only ever hear the bad bits hey? If this is the last diary entry I write before being set-up as a drugs mule, or VISA-violating criminal, then let me just tell you that the smell of freedom is good, well, it would be, were I not sat in an air conditioned tin can with another 300 or so people, all breathing, farting and BO-ing the same 'fresh' air. Joy. Wish me luck in customs, and if it's not forthcoming...goodbye cruel world.... read more

Greetings from Alice Springs! No springs at all here though. Tis very dry and dusty. Apparently theres an underground river or something but i cant see any sign of it...all looks like bush and desert to me! Alice itself is a small town - not much here apart from people heading to Ayers Rock and back. Its got some good views of the surrounding McDonnell ranges and a cool Desert Park though, where you tramp about the bush with headphones on and some Aboriginal guy tells you all about the flora and fauna in various parts of the desert and how they used to survive out in the bush and what different plants were used for. All very educational...but i still dont think id remember enough of it to survive in the desert! Also interesting to ... read more

That's right! We're in Austria! We had a wonderful three months in Southeast Asia and loved just about every day of our seven weeks in Vietnam. We intended to head north from Sapa, Vietnam in to China, but decided that the rewards and challenges of travel in Asia had worn us down just a little too much for us to fully embrace our much-anticipated Chinese trek. Thanks to our flexible schedule and some very cheap tickets on Tiger Airways we have leapt ahead in our itinerary and are currently in the "red center" of Australia in Alice Springs. We will be here for about six weeks before visiting New Zealand and then returning to Asia to see the wonders of China. We know we are way behind and have tons of things ready to post in ... read more

Yes, I finally made it to Alice with no more problems. Greg was definitely please to get rid of us and even drove us to his company's head quarters so that we could have it out with his boss! Luckily for him, no one was home, but they'll be getting a few poison pen letters in the post to be sure. I stopped for one night at Melankas and now I'm sitting on another swag, in the near-freezing cold, under the dying sun somewhere on the way to Uluru with another tour group, wondering whether I should get in my swag, warm up and fall asleep or make an effort to talk to the new group. Think I've made the mistake of not having enough time off between tours, and now I've started my final tour ... read more

This morning I headed towards Alice Springs, the long way. If I had a four wheel drive I could have taken the 100km Giles road and been in Alice Springs by lunch time. Unfortunately I had to take a 240km detour to stay on sealed and passable roads so I ended up getting to Alice Springs at about 3pm. Just enough time to have a walk round. I'm so far not that impressed. Not exactly the oasis I'd been expecting. The River Todd runs through Alice Springs in the same as the Avon runs through Tewkesbury, apart from one difference. There hasn't been any water in this river for several years. Severn Trent take notice, if they can manage with a dry river and not have any water restrictions I’m sure any UK water shortage is ... read more

After Canberra, we headed south to Melbourne, where, amongst other things............. - we drove down the Great Ocean Road as far as the Twelve Apostles. THe road name is a bit of a scam though, as only the first section to Apollo BAy involves an "ocean-side" drive - the rest is inland! But we stayed 2 nights with Anita (who we met on our Central America #2 trip) either side of the drive - sharing photos and stories by her nice log fire!! And along the way, we met a cute, wild koala, who saw fit to sit in the middle of the road & halt the traffic! - we spent 4 nights staying in ST Kilda from where we got the tram into town each day. We visited some museums, shops and went on a guided ... read more

No, dont panic. Despite the title, this isnt news of a tax on suncream bankrupting the Ozzie economy, nor worries that swear boxes are to be introduced into Ozzie bars and having the same effect. Just that Jo and I are about to finish our trip around the land down under. We've had about 8 weeks here now, and have decided to fly on after completing our 10,000th kilometre this week. We left you a few weeks ago in Melbourne. We only spent a day there as we'd seen a lot of it the last time around. We took the van for a great days drive down the Great Ocean Road heading westwards. It lived up to its billing as one of the worlds great drives, winding along the coast line up and down clifftop roads ... read more

Uluru and Kata tjuta I thought it was supposed to be dry in the desert but when I woke up to catch my 6 am bus to Uluru it was pouring down. 2 hrs down the road, I woke up on the bus and the sky had turned perfectly blue. Cool ! I saw my first Kangaroo in the wild... too bad it was dead by the side of the road... It seemed to be a good morning for wildlife spotting as the next hour I got to see 2 more kangaroo (alive this time), a couple of giant eagles, emus and wild camels. When we arrived at the campsite they had just caught a 'some color (I think yellow) faced whip snake'. Very small but with a lot of venom! I would never have seen ... read more
