We had a long 9hr drive up to Broome, we almost ran out of petrol in the last 10Ks so began to panic but thankfully she managed to get us to a station. On the way we saw quite alot of mini sandstorms through the desert- and some really cool scenary.... although the same cd repeated over and over got really annoying! Anyway when we eventually found a camp site to stop for a couple of nights we realised that these last couple of nights were going to be uncomfortable as it was in the forties during the day and about 25C at night! Most of the day we hung by the gorgeous pool and chilled out. We went for a walk along the famous cable beach although we didn't swim as the whole beach was ... read more

Eventually it was time to leave the NT... chosen mode of transport this time was the Ghan. Wednesday 18th October to Thursday 19th October 2006 Journey Scribbles... 11.08am Sat on the train, gently trundling south towards Katherine. My seat is R62 but luckily for me the bloke who was sat next to me decided he wanted an aisle seat (bladder problems!!). I can't believe I've been in Australia over 6 months! Crazy! But cool because mum and dad are arriving in about 4 weeks!! :-) Errrr... I've just opened my water bottle cos I thought I'd fill it and take it with me on the Cruise around Katherine Gorge and it's got mould growing in it!!! Gross!! Think I'll be leaving that then! 12.16pm Just seen two black stallions ('brumbies') trotting through the bush! how cool! ... read more

Nestled between the West and East MacDonnell ranges, and almost slap-bang in the middle of the entire continent, Alice Springs can claim to be the largest settlement in the Australian interior, a grand title for a town of fewer than 30,000 inhabitants. With all of its shopping, eating and accommodation within a few blocks on the obligatory grid system, it's a compact base from which to plan and subsequently explore the Red Centre. It's also the main place in Australia to buy Aboriginal art, be it the distinctive dot paintings familiar to most people, or more contemporary designs. There isn't an enormous amount to see in Alice, though one highlight is sunset as seen from ANZAC Hill. I made my visit there at the same time as a school trip, meaning there was little opportunity for ... read more

From the window of the plane Australia’s landscape soon turned increasingly baron from city suburbs and fields to red dusty plains and dry river beds. Surprising however was the sight of what appeared to be Glacial scarring with tens of kilometre scratches swirling across the now arid plains. Descending to a cloudy but hot Alice Springs the prominent long peaks of the McDonnell range came into view and on exit we were picked up and taken to our hostel "Annie’s Place" by a chirpy Neisha. The hostel was great and on arrival we were checked into our room and talked through the 3 day tour of the region which was to begin the next morning. (For those thinking of visiting, Annie's 3 day tour is cheaper than any of the other companies 2 day tours) After ... read more

Day 146 Saturday 26 August 2006 Ti-Tree to Alice Springs (approx. 200 km’s) Today we found a really cheap caravan park for the whole family for $20. We thought this was a bargain and it has everything that the rest of them have. We saw the Ghan train go by the caravan park and this is the train that travels from Adelaide to Darwin via Alice Sporings. Someone told us that we could go and see it and possi bly look inside as it stays in Alice Springs for 4 hours so we decided we would go and see it at the station. We unfortunately could not get on it but we spoke to many people that were travelling on it and they were all enjoying themselves and said it was a fantastic way to travel. ... read more

Alice Springs June 16-21, 2006 Friday We were very eager to reach Australia’s “red center” and bounded off of our airplane excited to explore. The Alice Springs airport is perfectly situated in the rocky nothingness outside of town to whet the appetite for exploration and the uninterrupted view across the dry plains greets you from the moment you climb down from your aircraft. Our lift into town was to be provided by our hostel, Annie’s Place, but was nowhere to be seen. After forty-five minutes sitting in the passenger pick-up lane our mood was beginning to dampen, particularly when calls to Annie’s were answered with typical Aussie aplomb (“no worries, we were just waiting to give someone else a ride to the airport”). We never tried to explain to our genial hosts around the country that ... read more

We arrived in Alice Springs on Thursday 3rd August and had a great first night at Casa Nostra with Barb and Lowy catching up and drinking too much red wine. Haven’t I said that before? Barb is one of my oldest mates so in the 12 days we stayed in Alice we didn’t run out of things to talk about. Because we have been here before we were able to be a bit more selective about where to go and what to do but the Lows’ had already organised a trip out bush for the long weekend and were only too pleased to have us along - or so they said. Left on the Saturday afternoon after John and Lowy played golf and headed out to D’hala gorge with another couple Ursula and Scotty. Both these ... read more

We had the morning to look around Alice Springs, once everywhere was open, but unfortunately there was no where near enough time left before our late morning flight. We were left with just two hours to cover the Old Telegraph Station, the School of The Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. We hence arranged for a taxi to take us from place to place at specific times. It was a complete rush, but we managed to cover them all, albeit briefly. The Old Telegraph station was just as I remembered it from last time (see ) and, given how early in the morning it was, we had the whole place to ourselves. In the age of the Internet and mobile phones, the idea that a message needed to be sent by means of a series ... read more

Update is that I left the humidity of Darwin and got on the famous 'Ghan' Train which let us have a few hours in Katherine, very hot place, spent 3 hours sheltering in a shopping centre. Cool sight was in the nighttime going through the remote bush with fires allround (controlled of course) surreal sight. Arrived in Alice Springs, have found one of those perfect hostels, 'Alice's Secret' no spoilt brat school leavers here! Just chilled friendly people. Spent 2 nights at Alice's attending to my affairs inc the heartbreaking 'chuck out' as my accumulation has exceeded what I can be bothered to carry. Then last Thursday set off through the McDonnel Ranges and out towards Uluru (Ayers Rock). Got a 'distant' sunset to start with, then camped out near the ultra commercial Ayers Rock Resort. ... read more
