now where did I leave off... Oh yes, walking to the Telegraph Station. It was a cool walk, and very pretty. The Todd River quite fascinates me, and I followed its sandy course all the way to the Station. The Station is the first (and 2nd through to around 12th) building(s) built in "Alice Springs", although these days it's actually about 4km out of town. In fact, the buildings were there not as a suitable place to put a town, but as a suitable place to run the Overland Telegraph Line, and put a boosting station. The Overland Telegraph represents the connection of Australia to the world, via the undersea link from Indonesia to Darwin. It ran the entire breadth of the Country, from Adelaide to Darwin, and was built in ridiculous speed; from July 1870 ... read more

Work is getting better now that I've worked out the rythm. And we haven't quite been so hammered now: we were on call and only got 4 new patients. I had a great weekend. Well, a mixed, mostly great weekend. I slept in (for a start), then I went to see the Royakl Flying Doctors Service Base. Which, none too surprisingly is on the hospital grounds. When we were there, the radio operator was having the weekend off, s all the calls were being switched through to the local (St John's) ambos. So the guide explained what was being shown on the board: there was a "routine" flight out to the west, and one down to Yurala (The RFDS base near Uluru) which was an emergencyu, some tourists had rolled their car. When I got to ... read more

I'm leaving Alice Spings today, but I have to say I have had a great time. I think if I spent any more time here I would be a bit bored, as like Canberra, there isn't all that much to do. Here was time for my first tour and I loved it!! Mulga's tours is fantastic andI would recommend them to anyone who wants to visit Uluru. We did a 3 hour hike thorugh a place called Kings Canyon which was hard but well worth it for the views. As you can see from the picture I have my lovely fly net on, and that went on as soon as you woke up in the morning, and stayed on until the sun went down and the flies disappered. I have never seen so many flies in ... read more

Having travelled on the 'mighty' Indian Pacific for 44 hours from Perth to Adelaide, our 19 hour journey on the 'legendary' Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs went surprisingly quickly. 'The Ghan' is pretty much identical to 'The Indian Pacific', except it travels between Adelaide and Darwin, stopping only at Alice Springs in the middle. So when we arrived at midday on the 24th Feb, the serious increase in temperature hit us immediately when we stepped out of the train. Scorchio! Thankfully our hostel, 'The Alice Lodge', was complete with a pool, which was pretty much where we spent the rest of the day. At 6am the next morning, we were picked up for the beginning of our 3 day/2 night, longawaited 'Rock Tour'. At that time of the morning we were all pretty sleppy still, ... read more

Fly count: 3 It's hot out here. Fancy that. Well, despite a lack of luggage (Which did arrive, at about 5.40pm monday), I started work on Monday. It is really busy here, while only 15-20 patients, you're on call one in three, and most of the patients aare complicated. I usually start about 0800, with real, proper handover, and I usually finish around 5pm. Wierdly, my actually paid hours are 0800 to 1606. Yes, at 6 minutes past 4 pm, I finish. Allied health finish at 16.21. I do not understand, myself, but I hope to, soon. It is amazing, truly fantastic what these people do at the hospital, and in the community. You can't help but feel like you need to put in 110%, because everyone else does, and it still isn't enough. Ok... funny ... read more

If you ever want to feel youre in Australia then Alice springs and Uluru is the place to come. This place is a truely beautiful and spiritual place where you can almost feel the Aboriginal spirits that you are told about when you visit this place. I stayed in a lovely little backpager lodge called Annies Place. They ran their own 3 day trip to Uluru so after an early night(the first in ages) i was up around 5.30am (and missing the Barca liverpool game which was driving me mad till i found out the score a few hours later :o) ) to head off to the Kings Canyon with "Spanky" as our tour guide. Hello hello. Back from my 5 day tour of the 'red centre' now. It was pretty exhausting...up at 4am every morning to catch the GORGEOUS sunrises and "beat the heat". The weather topped 40 degrees every day....and those damn flies! I had to invest in a fly net! It truley is the best invention ever! The sunsets/sunrises are sensational...the sky is so clear, at night u see millions of stars! its pretty! Our tour guide was a baffoon of a man...but the people were fun! We enjoyed abusing him amongst ourselves! I Had to write down where I've been because half of the time I didn't have a clue where I was or why I was there...(nice one mr tour guide! grrr!) OK...so to sum it up... Day 1- drove lots, went to a camel farm, ... read more

Actually, if I write this the instant I get here, as I am, I won't have any stories to tell... Well, sort of. Drove down to the Airport, all was well, got there in plenty of time, you know, 50 minutes before the flight, 20 minutes before check in closes... Now, I've never been to terminal 3 at Kingsford Smith before, so maybe this is normal, but it was absolutely full of people. Like, people everywhere. I try to find a check-in counter... but there aren't any. So it's Automatic check in or the highway... and it's 2,800 km between Sydney and here. The line-ups are huge, which means I don't get my bag checked in until 20 minutes before the flight, and I don't get through airport security (even though they opened a third security ... read more

Arrived in Alice this morning, its BOILING! Flies are around me like a cowpat and I'm the minority being a white person. I guess this is the land of the aboriginals! The hostel is amazingly cute...i have a pink door! woohooo! And there's a pool right outside my room! I might take advantage of that soon! Only really quickly walked around Alice Springs, there are loads of delicious aboriginal art stores! I feel this might be an expensive trip! Off on my tour tomorrow- picked up at 6am. Probably won't hear anything from me until i get back to the hostel next tuesday! I appear to be melting, i must leave this internet room! Bye bye! x... read more
