We stayed a few days in and around Kununurra, which overall is a great destination - with Ord River water freely available to all, the town is very green with water used liberally every day it makes a pleasant change from other FNWA towns. We could not help reflect on what the Murray and Darling Rivers might be like if they had similar resource utilisation to the Ord! A couple of short drives saw us at Ivanhoe Crossing, where we fished for a few hours (no luck) and generally lazed around in the sun (27degrees) and watched the crocs swim by once again. The local Rum brewery was the next stop for later that afternoon - trick little place with some of the brews helping to bring beer o’clock forward by a couple of hours. ... read more

Hi, folks. Well, as the outback has unsurprisingly poor internet access this will be mercifully short. We left you after our escapades in Mt Hotham whereafter we continued on our way to meet up with Marlene (a lady that lives near Melbourne and we last saw in Livingston in Zambia). We stayed with her in her beautiful house for a few days and nipped in to do a spot of snapping in the Victorian capital, enjoyed the use of a shower and ate some lovely food prepared by Marlene's son, Brent. Thanks so much to both if you're reading this. After Melbourne we headed down the great ocean road to picture the rolling coastline in the south before, eventually, arriving in Adelaide. Adelaide itself is probably the smallest looking major town that we've visited so far ... read more

Hi guys, just a quick blog to let you know we are still alive. Currently around Alice Springs and going Gem hunting...if you do not hear from us in the next 5 days you will know we have struck it rich and moved to the Bahamas... cheers... read more

UntitledWell we didn’t make it to Mount Dare, boggy hole or Dalhousie Springs as we decided to wait for a future trip through the Simpson Desert and put all these places into the journey. Also the desert parks pass would cost $90 and we had only planned to stay there for a couple of days. We have done the Mereenie Loop and saw the gorges which are sight to see. The water in them is freezing cold so there was no swimming for us. We stayed at Ellery Creek Big Hole and had the local dingos howling all night. Next up we stayed at Redbank Gorge for two nights while we did the local walks around the gorges. We also got our first flat tyre for the trip here. In doing the Mereenie Loop you need ... read more

A First for the Arbuckles! We have never taken a hot air balloon ride before, yet alone before dawn in the Southern Hemisphere winter. We were up early again and picked up at 5am by John & Rob of Outback Ballooning along with about a dozen others from area hotels. We headed out towards the airport, then took a dirt road 10 miles into the dark of the Outback. It was a cold morning, minus 3 degrees Celsius which is about 25F. Dressed warm with coats, hats, gloves and scarfs we got off the bus at the launch site to witness an unbelievable sky. More stars visible than at Ayres Rock were above us. Italians, Aussies, Germans, French, English and ourselves stood spellbound for nearly 10 minutes looking towards the heavens. It simply is no ... read more

Ayres Rock-to-Kings Canyon-to-Alice Springs Today we left before sunrise on the tour bus with Ricky and Chris. They drove us in the pre-dawn hours for about 200 kilometers while we slept some more to Kings Canyon, a cut in the Outback plain between Ayres Rock and Alice Springs. We had breakfast at the Kings Canyon Cafe - WAY out in the middle of nowhere - where they advertised the "worlds best bacon and eggs" (most definitely not, but good for where we were). It was about 1 degree Celsius (about 34 degrees F)...winter in the Southern Hemisphere remember. Saw some wild camels and some kangaroos in a pen - pretty cute really. Took the guys who run this place 5 years to find the water to setup business. We are talking about land more desolate ... read more

A big travel day! Big travel day today. Out of the hotel at 4:45am departing Christchurch, New Zealand (adding 2 hours time zone to our day), arriving in Sydney for customs then on to intra-country flight north to the coastal city of Cairnes (pronounced "Canns") where it is 80+ degrees. Total flight time, 7 hours. Total "port to port" time, 15 hours. One of our longest ever recorded. We did okay. Out of New Zealand via Air New Zealand then on to Cairnes from Sydney with Quantas Airlines - like flying Southwest with lots of humor and all, plus the added extra plus of very good food being served. Tomorrow we walk down to the pier and join a catamaran sailing group for a snorkel tour of the Great Barrier Reef, 8.5 hours round trip with ... read more

Well we did head up through Port Augusta and then straight for Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges to set up camp for 4 nights. This was where it got cold. And it hasn’t got any better yet. The coldest we have recorded has been -1.1°C, that was in Alice Springs (a bit about that latter) but most nights it’s a brisk 4°C or there about. Wilpena pound is a natural rock formation formed by erosion over time. As there are numerous walks around the pound and surrounds we grabbed a guide and went to explore. We headed up Huck’s lookout and Stokes Hill first to get an idea of the magnitude of the ranges before taking a walk around Sacred Canyon. I didn’t like this place. There where some nice rock carvings at the end ... read more

Yo yo yo What a week. I'm on the funnest tour ever, and have met loads of cool people. I'll put photo's up when i have more time but they will be worth the wait. Right so we started in Darwin and went to Litchfield National Park and enjoyed swimming in Waterfalls (I don't like swimming in the sea but this was awesome). At one stage i did scream when i was attacked by a fish. It didn't hurt but was more shock. We swam in one called Florence Falls. We were meant to swim in one called Wangi but due to a late wet season it was still at high level with risk of salt water crocs. (yeah glad we passed on that) I know i keep joking about the heat and it being ... read more
