Once it was what the name is telling you, a place to find water on the lang way south. Later on it became an important telegraph station and planes were made to connect it to Adelaide at the south coast via a railway line. Today Alice is still not a big city (around 30,000 residents) but it´s clearly a tourist destination. People come here visit the 'Red Center´ of Australia and to experience Aboriginal culture. Nowhere else can you buy so many digeridoo and other Aboriginal stuff. For Backpacker that do not jet around Australia it´s the hub for a visit to Ayers Rock. When I arrived and steped out of the Ghan I found it to be faitly pleasant concerning the weather. The locals said that they had had quite a lot of rain and ... read more

22nd December 2005 After the rigours of yesterday at Uluru, we were glad to have a bit of a lay in. So after a good sleep we rose about 9.30am, showered then out for a cup of coffee and croissant in town. We had previously booked for “A town called Alice” tour of the highlights of the town but this was not till the afternoon. We also booked for “Spirit of the night sky” a unique look at the stars at night which was for the evening. (I shall write a separate Blog for this experience). So after some lunch in our Hotel room & minor shopping the bus picked us up at 2.30pm, this turned out to be a minibus, which had a South African an English couple and an American Family with 2 kids, ... read more

22nd December 2005 We had booked a tour called "Spirit of the Night Sky", we were to be picked up at 7.30pm so we waited at reception expecting to see a minibus or coach. However by 7.30pm nothing had arrived, so we wandered around the front of the Hotel, then suddenly a young woman appeared and said "Are you two guys booked on Spirit of the Night Sky?" we replied that we were and she explained that she worked for Laksar Burra and would be taking us to meet him at the venue. She had parked her car in the carpark of the Hotel so we piled in and were soon speeding out of town and 20 minutes later arrived at a gateway, where the car entered and we were driven up a gravel drive to ... read more

21st December 2005 Oh dear! I have been under the misapprehension that Uluru was a short bus or taxi ride out of Alice Springs. How wrong can a person be? It is actually 440 Km, or 41/2 hours away. In other words the distance between London and Exeter. Well too late, the trip was booked on the internet in London so we are committed, so we were picked up at 6.00am by the Emu Run Bus and after a couple of pick- ups, we headed out on the Stuart Highway into the countryside. We had two guides who were probably in their late fifties or early sixties but were really informative and shared the driving between them. To me the bush was interesting, I kept scanning the countryside for a Kangaroo or Wallaby but nothing showed, ... read more

20th December 2005 Hiya Folks, I rose early at 7.15am, as I wanted to complete the Cairns Blogs in the internet Room. Then back to the Hotel room where I had left David sleeping and after packing last minutes things we checked out and got a taxi to the airport. 15 - 20 minutes later we arrived at the Domestic terminal and checked in for our flight to Alice Springs. Our plane was a Boeing 707 that took 125 passengers, but the flight was less than 1/2 full, so we had the pick of seats and as the plane had two seats one side and three the other we opted for two seats together on LH side of plane and I had the window seat. The plane left dead on time and we were soon heading ... read more

This was my first organized trip. It was fantastic! I met some really wonderful people and learned alot of interesting things. Our tour guide was actually very steriotypical looking of someone from the outback. He even kept calling things "beautiful". We trecked around for about 3 - 4 hours a day. Always in the morning because by the time 9 am came around the temperature was already in the 30s. The first two night we had storms blow in and we had to set up tarps and box ourselves in to sleep. The second night was so bad that it actually hailed! So much for being in the desert! The next two nights were spent away from any camp site and we slept by rivers, under the star light. I think there were more stars out ... read more
