Wednesday was a little on the wet side, actually more of a tidal wave with rain rain rain. So due to the weather we changed our plans and visited the Marime Museum in Darling Harbour. Was good to see Australia had more history at sea than just convict ships and we enjoyed finding out about thier involvement in the world wars. The rest of the day was spent shopping in Paddys Market and enjoying the covered roof top pool and gym at the hotel. In the evening we dined at a Italian restaurant recommended by our concierge which served a top pizza and garlic mushrooms. Our last day in Sydney was a little drier and we jumped on the ferry and popped over to Manly and the beach. After watching the surfers do thier thing we ... read more

Yesterday night, I arrived back in Australia. Yay! And they even let me into the country . I had a lot to do last week after coming home from Copenhagen on Sunday night. I still had to finish my preparations for the congress in Melbourne, and there was a lot of other work to do. Apart from that, I had two appointments with trainers, one on Monday and one on Thursday evening, because I would like to start personal training. More on that soon. Besides, I had some paperwork that I needed to finish, and, and, and… Thursday night, I went for a barbecue with my colleagues, on the beach of the river Elbe, which feels almost like being by the sea. After four hours of sleep, I got up, packed my suitcase and went to ... read more

Geo: -32.9264, 151.781Well, I have been back for almost three months, So what have I been up to since?Well, after and amazing trip to India and Nepal and a week in Adelaide, it was time to hit the road again for work. I would return to Newcastle where I had spent 6 weeks previous to my overseas trip.I stayed in Newcastle for 10 days and then had work up north in Moree.Luisa and I drove up over the Easter long weekend and stayed in Port Maquarie, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay in the back of my car. With no matress, it makes for a uncomfortable nights sleep.Luisa was loving the free coffee and buscuits at the drivier reviver stops. After dropping Luisa off in Byron Bay, I then enjoyed a 6hr drive west, inland to Moree to ... read more

It's that time again! Leonie and Peter (AKA: Lucky Pete, Never Tell-a-Lie Pete, Trust-Me Pete, Work Experience Boy) are heading off on another adventure. This time it's via Adelaide, Alice Springs, Tanami Desert, Wolfe Creek, Bungle Bungles, Kalumburu, Mitchell Falls, Kununurra, Katherine, Kakadu, Arnhem Land, Far North Queensland and then back to Newcastle. We will probably be on the road for about six months this time. Everything is prepared except for the very reliable Toyota Hilux. Make a note girl: 'NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA HILUX'. This new Hilux model appears to be as under-designed as the other Toyotas making the news. So its farewell to fabulous staff at Newcastle Private Hospital. Everything is packed, the Engel fridge is running cool and we are itching to go. Just as soon as Toyota repair another fault, this time ... read more

Boredom, Beaches and new friends So our trip up the gold coast started with another great train journey with scones and jam (as per usual) and ended with us arriving in a place called Newcastle which was much warmer than the one in the UK. Although we weren’t far from Sydney at this point you could feel the temperature difference already. We made our way the short distance to the hostel which was an old manor house with a grand living room (now full of beer cans, dirt and hung-over travellers) and realised we were only moments from the beach - so first plan body boarding (as these were free). We checked in with the guy on reception who was pretty nice, we said we were YHA members, which I guess to him may have meant ... read more

Headed North from Bondi and after a couple of hundred Kms the tank seemed to be letting us down already. He spluttered and coughed and jerked us around but maybe he just doesnt like the highways. We headed for a place called Newcastle which is apperently the 7th largest city in Australia but which is about as big as a very small town in the UK. Necastle does not however live up to its namesake in the UK, it has a very pretty beach (even if it is called nobbies head). It is a university town so there were lots fo young people around. We camped at a place called Stockton, which was only across the water from Newcastle but it was a 20k drive or a short ferry ride. The campsite was a big step ... read more

I miss the strangest things from home. Like frozen juice. They don’t have frozen juices here! Do they realize how hot it is here? Frozen lemonade would be really nice! Don’t even get me started on the lemonade they do have here, Mr Clean anyone? Mmm refreshing. I miss ginger ale. They have dry ginger ale here, which kind of tastes like Canada Dry but made with rotten ginger. I miss bagels. The few bagels I have found here taste odd, kind of sour. I miss tomato sauce in a can! The grocery store here, Coles, sells their “brand” of tomato sauce but they are the only ones, and it comes in a jar, which is fine, but they have been sold out for weeks! How am I supposed to make pasta sauce? I miss my ... read more

Today Regan and I went to the Stockton Sand Dunes. Which you would think are in Stockton, that’s what we thought. Nope! They are about 30 minutes north of Stockton. So these dunes are the largest in the southern hemisphere and the move about 4 metres north every year. Strange. You think they could put a big fan at the north end to make them stay in one spot. So at these Stockton Sand Dunes not in Stockton you can go on 4WD tours and camel rides. We thought at first a camel ride would be cool but then we figured after 5 minutes you’d be thinking “I can walk faster than this and what is that smell!?” So maybe take a pass on the camels. We didn’t do any 4WD tour either because we are ... read more

So this time last year it was snowing! Now it is sunny and about 30̊. Although my Birthday did go from being in the Spring to being in the Fall (or Autumn as they call it here) so I think I traded down. For my Birthday Regan (Ryan’s sister) drove up from Sydney, a 2 hour drive. The 3 of us went to a park called The Blackbutt Reserve. It is a free national park, you have to pay $5 for parking for the whole day but someone gave us their ticket. So it was free fun for all. The Blackbutt Reserve has Koala Encounters every day at 2pm (these are $3.50 per person) where you get to pet them and take pictures with them. So we got to the park around noon and we wandered ... read more
