Arrived in Newcastle at 9pm, and found our way to the hostel which we booked. There wasn't any camp sites so we had to make do. We were put in a 16 bed dorm which was miy (lisa's) worst nightmare, but i survived. The next morning we took a walk into town and had a little look round before grabbing some food and heading back to the campsite. That evening we walked back into town to watch a singer/guitarist play in a local pub. He was great, but was serrenaded by a gay guy all night who really tested our patience. Newcastle was ok but not too much to do there. We ended up camping in the hostal ground for the next two nights which was so much better as i got my own personal space. ... read more

Indulgence began early this year because it was Uncle Mike's birthday on 23rd December. To celebrate we took him out to a local Irish themed pub for lunch. It was a delicious meal, but I think the rich chocolate dessert was a mistake - Mike and I both suffered later! Christmas in Dungog We drove up to Dungog, Uncle Mike's place in the country on Christmas Eve and arrived around lunchtime to meet Helen. The afternoon was spent putting up decorations and preparing for the festivities. The booze was not opened until the evening - it was good restraint on Mike's part! Christmas morning began cloudy - not what we were expecting at all. However it was warm and the sun broke through in the afternoon so we spent the majority of the day on the ... read more

So here I am, finally back to Australia, and all happy about it. The weather here is great, we have around 30 degrees, and it is sunny with a comfy cool breeze. I'm just sitting in Monica and Scott's backyard in Newcastle. But let's start with my journey. My flight to Seoul, South Korea, was just a pure luxury. I had three seats for myself, as well as three pillows and three blankets. No wonder I had a good sleep on my way to Seoul. In Seoul, I took a walk around the airport. Last time, I had only seen it from the inside. The airport is a huge, modern building, with shops and restaurants, of course, but also with a beautifully arranged indoor garden. One funny thing I found is that there are emergency defibrillators ... read more

................and so to Brisbane. We got the early bus without having booked anywhere and ended up in the City Centre. The hostel was a bit on the “party” side, needed a deposit for just about anything and everything and was really only redeemed by the view of the city from it’s roof top terrace. We struggled with Brisbane - it is a pretty inoffensive sort of place and generally pleasant, but it lacks those must see sights, buildings and attractions. It is probably an easier place to live in rather than visit and there is a resemblance to a city in the US in the respect that the centre seems to become deserted at night. We spent our days checking out such as the Gabba, Queensland State Parliament building and night’s mainly around Caxton, with it’s ... read more

Sydney Surprises We met my Uncle Mike and his partner Helen in the centre of Sydney and went to Centre Point Tower for lunch. A tall, pole-like structure, it overlooks Sydney's skyscrapers presenting commanding views of the metropolis below. At the top of the tower is a revolving restaurant giving diners 360 degree panoramic views - meaning you don't have to delay that assault on a juicy bit of kangaroo steak to leave your table for the views! After we had had our fill of great views and decent tucker, we headed down to Circular Quay and caught a ferry to the destination of our final surprise. It was then revealed that we would not have to spend 2+ hours in the car on the way back to Newcastle or 2.5 hours on the train because ... read more

Today some of our friends went to a 50th birthday party in Newcastle and the rest of us caught the ferry over to Newcastle and walked up to Fort Scratchley to explore. It was a very interesting day. We took a tour through the tunnels at the Fort which reminded me so much of the similar forts set up at Middle Head. Our guide told us all about the attack on Newcastle by the Japanese sub. and how Fort Scratchley returned fire. Before it became Fort Scratcheley, the Awabakal people used the area, convicts mined it and signalmen lit coal fired beacons to show mariners the entrance to the port of Newcastle. The military built the fort in 1882, and it is the only Australian Coastal Defence Battery to have returned fire on an enemy vessel ... read more

This morning we left Rosies and drove to Stockton which is a small village just north of Newcastle. We met up with five other couples here and enjoyed three days exploring the area. The caravan park is in a fabulous position it fronts both Stockton Beach and Newcastle Harbour waterfront park. There is plenty to do here. There are lots of lovely places to walk and the busy coal shipping harbour provides lots of interesting activity. There were all sorts of craft on the water, tug boats, big ships, sailing ships, jet skiis, long boats, canoes, water skiers, kite surfers etc. A very interesting and enjoyable place to stay.... read more

Day 482 to 488 (21.07.08 - 27.07.08) Mark had generously passed his cold on to Chrissie so we had a fairly quiet week in a bid to be fully recovered by the weekend. We were off up to Newcastle to visit Meryl and Graeme once more before leaving the country. We'd managed to get some really cheap flights up and both took Friday off work as our flight left in the early afternoon. We packed up our day packs and made our way into town where we picked up the skybus out to the airport. We checked into the tiny Tiger terminal and then went outside to make the most of the glorious sunshine that we'd not seen for a long time. Our flight up to NSW was uneventful and pretty quick and we were kindly ... read more
