2007 MH CC Trek (m1) A good friend suggested I create an Internet blog to keep in touch with family, friends, and to diary our long awaited, and much overdue vacation. I must admit, the very thought of learning a "new technology" repulsed me. Heck, I didn't know what a blog was, and I sure in the hell didn't know where to start. As this is my first "blog," please don't be too critical of it's content, layout, spelling, grammar, or style. (By David) Monday April 16, 2007 Our goal was to leave around noon. Knowing Bruce, you know that didn't happen! Our first day's trek was around 250 miles. Which was about half of what we were shooting for. I know that this is coming very soon after my first post, but here's another one. My list of the top 25 things I want to do in Europe (in no particular order, some of these stolen from the Rough Guide): 1. Participate in a festival 2. Check out a local sporting event 3. Stay with a local for at least one night (visit a local students union and buy someone a beer in exchange for a place to stay?) 4. Learn enough French, Italian, and Spanish to be able to get by, spend an entire week speaking only Portuguese 5. Read a novel set in each major city I will be visiting 6. Wander the backstreets 7. Visit a local market 8. Eat lots of local meals and street food 9. Buy a cheap bike ... read more

So, last week I was given the news that I was accepted into the Oxford Study Abroad Programme for early 2008. I'm really looking forward to immersing myself into the culture in Oxford, both academic and social. I plan to study mostly post-imperialist literature, although I'm also going to be taking tutorials in Renaissance Drama and the History of British India. But that's not the exciting part! My semester ends on April 8, which gives me five and a half weeks between then and May 18, when I have to be back in the States (for my college's graduation...I'll still have another semester to go, but most of my close friends are graduating). I plan to use those five weeks to travel around Europe as much as possible. The countries I would like to visit most ... read more

The snows that the meteorologists promised for the Denver area didn't come. When I woke up at 6:00, I jumped to the window and breathed a sigh of relief to notice that the sky was cloudy and not a flake of snow had fallen overnight. Not bothering to eat breakfast because I was to anxious to get on the plane, I checked out of the hotel and made my way to Denver International Airport. Once at my gate, I sat and waited, listening to people make cell phone calls. One woman was saying how another airline, in anticipation of the snow, canceled all their flights this morning. Ouch. Our plane finally arrived right on time and we filed on. I sat in the last row with a man who is a pilot for Southwest. The woman ... read more

Quicky entry for travel day 1.. Plane delayed leaving Heathrow with passenger escorted off plane. Would love to say why but we didnt get the benefit of seeing anything. Delay caused by the off loading of his sodding baggage... Long flight, good films, passable food, excellent service though then the joy of Los Angeles Immigration. After approximately 12 hours on the plane, the prospect of a 2 hour wait to be interrogated makes you wonder why the hell you would choose to come (back) to the US! A travel tip, give at least 4 hours for a connecting flight, better to do an overnight stay and travel the next day, so many of our fellow passengers got caught out like this. Luckily we had booked into the Airport Marriot with what appeared to be the entire ... read more

This weekend was relocation when our ship changed home ports from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa. We had 2 days at sea with no passengers - the ship all of the crew! Those couple days were packed with parties, drama and emotions. Thursday night (the 12th), I was DJing the last dance party of the cruise for my teens and I logged onto the internet to send/receive email. There was one from mom that said Grandpa Steinhoff had gone to the hospital with pain. They ran tests, then operated and now he was on life support. The doctors had told Grandma to notify the family because he was “serious”. I felt panicked. I just wanted to be home, to call home, to leave. My biggest fear about going far from home, especially for an extended period of ... read more
