What's a day in Raleigh without visiting Oakwood Cemetery? Oakwood is just down the road from my high school. It is a sprawling beautiful ol' cemetery. My grandaddy is there. So are lots of dead Confederate soliders. A few died in the civil war--but most of the dead soliders buried there were veterans of the war that died in the 1920's or so. Last year when I came to the cemetery for a visit, I discovered the Jewish section--I had no idea that there was one! Pretty cool! There's something about cemeteries that I just love... I like reading the inscriptioins--a tiny bit of history, a tiny bit of someone's life. Anyways, the best thing about Oakwood is Jesse Helms' gravestone. It's engraved... and just waiting for him to die! Oh Jesse... Wonder if he's gonna ... read more

Last week, when Ben was still in Raleigh with me, we were driving after dinner with my friend Lynda. We were near NC State University, so I happened to mention the cows with windows. You see, NC State has a good vet school and agricultural blah blah farming stuff. When I was a kid, we would drive down one of the back roads near the fairgrounds, by some property NC State owned, and see the cows with windows. They have this like... window in their side. I don't know why. I don't know how. All I know is that it is freakin' weird. As I remember it as a kid, they were big clear round windows, like portholes on a boat--so you could see all their insides slithering around. But, when Lynda, Ben and I drove ... read more

Alright... my first entry... I'll keep it short as I've got a ton of memorizing to do and dinner at 5. -Arrived at 12:30 -Airport full of stuffed dead animals but the people seem nice enough -Staying at the University of Montana in the Dorms -Dorms have gun rooms (to store your guns) Hmm... I have a feeling I'm not on the west coast any more... -Limited internet- in regards to time and access - Training goes from 9:30am to 8pm everyday, have to check out a key for the computer room, and in a few days we head up to a camp ground for "team building" -Can't get it out of my head that I'm not in college anymore (though I am staying in a dorm so it confuses me even more), old rules don't ... read more

In late May, 2005, as the crowds were heading out for the long holiday weekend, your Oly trio returned from a four day photo safari to Silver Falls State Park, east of Salem, Oregon. It is about a 3 hour drive for us. We arrived at Silver Falls the previous Monday afternoon and had most of the campground to ourselves in a beautiful site next to a burbling stream. Someone has to do this work of capturing magnificent images of spectacular exposures of our great Northwest. Images from this expedition are available for view and purchase in my online gallery at NW Exposures After our wet, rainy outing to the Columbia Gorge earlier in May, the weather was perfect for this trip. I take my photos in the early morning and then later in the day ... read more

May 2005 Upon my return with the boys I spent one day in Santa Barbara. My friend Kerry Lee asked if I could give her a hand and work a wedding in Santa Barbara. It was fun to be that kind of busy, but I don’t really miss “work” all that much! Next on the list was quality time with the kids closer to home. What I mean is as part of my “search for balance program” I wanted to spend time with the kids (Taylor & Casey and Maximus & Odessa). So, my first opportunity was to spend the weekend taking care of Taylor (5 yrs) and Casey (2 yrs) by myself!! Tim and Christina had a nice quiet romantic weekend away from home planned. Well, it was a long weekend, and I am pretty ... read more

31/05/05: Picture downhill skiing and then 1 hour later basking in the tropical Hawaiian sun. Many people don’t know this but Hawaii gives you the opportunity to do this. Coming from someone that hasn’t even seen snow before, let alone been skiing, I thought that it was best not to indulge in this escapade. Besides, I think snowfall in summer is minimal on the mountain summits. You can, however, experience natures power on the opposite temperature spectrum and stand next to a river of 1150 deg C molten lava. This can be done all year round but the unusual, although very obvious (if you think about it) characteristic of active volcanoes is that the landscape is always changing. New land is added/destroyed each day which makes it very difficult for tour guides to predict the daily ... read more

Kev had all ready been to Hollywood but he went again with me, nice one. So we caught a few buses and got there and walked along Hollywood boulevard and checked out all the stars on the footpath. Then we went to get a pic of the sign but it was a long way away. Next we went to get some lunch and Kev told me I had to try this place that had awesome chicken wings. So off we went and we arrived at hooters. We eat so much food while having a beer and taking in the scenery. Then we trekked back to the hostel and then I said my goodbyes to Kev and went to LAX to catch a flight to Detroit and my camp.... read more

Henry Flagler lived the kind of fascinating and far-ranging life one expects from a 19th century American tycoonapreneurist. Among his achievements was enabling access to the Florida Keys by railroad in 1912 as a final triumph in his campaign to fully develop Florida. Although his amazing railroad was thoroughly trashed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, the remaining infrastructure was utilised to create the Overseas Highway that today funnels people down a pocky two-lane road to the the "paradise" that inspired Margaritaville. Cruising down this morning past countless seafood restaurants, boat dealerships and flipflopperies, I noted how the actual development of the Keys seemed to end in 1980. It's all gravel roads, pickup trucks and brutish building design. The Keys vibe is laissez-faire, sunburned and fashionless. You go... read more
