Today is Baby Rowan's first birthday! Seth wouldn't tell us what his presents were because he was listening! We only drove 80 miles today because we wanted to check out Lake McConaughy for fishing and birding. We passed corn, winter wheat, cattle, alfalfa, and soybeans. Also there were miles of prairie grassland. In one field, we saw about 30 longhorns. The RV park was the former front yard of a farmer. We did laundry and relaxed. Then we went out the lake. Fishing wasn't too promising, and we were between bird migrations. We did take a long walk on the shore. The RV Park owner said the lake had been going down for 12 years and they had lost a valuable wetland area. There just hasn't been as much rain and snow as before. He ... read more

Sept 28th Sunday morning a good time to negociate central Phoenix , light traffic an all. Once again my early departure is frustrated as there is no one around to give me back my rest-room key deposit. Phoenix is kinda bland but more or less flat. Apache Junction is only 40 miles and I aim to get in early to motel room paradise. Instead of stocking up on water I rely on buying stuff on-route. The first 20 miles are okay with a slight wind against , the next 10 miles are harder as the breeze gets stiffer and the last 10 miles are a total grind with what seems like a bloody gale right in my face, a slow puncture on my rear tyre which needs re-inflating adds to the misery. I stop at starbucks ... read more

We got into dock at 6am this morning, got up showered had breakfast and was ready to wait in line for our number to be called so we could leave the ship. As we couldn't check into the hotel until late afternoon we decided to get on board a Duck (1/2 car 1/2 boat) tour. It was quite good and took up some of the time look at the different sites. ... read more

Dollywood - Pigeon Forge was like a little Vegas, bright lights, souvenir shops and mini golf (where once again Claire reigned supreme) We spent a day and a half in Dollywood itself mostly listening to numerous country and bluegrass bands sing endless renditions of 'Rockytop', which Ron now sings at any opportunity (he knows all the words). Park highlights included a visit to Dolly's childhood home and museum and a ride on the Dollywood steam train. From Tenessee we headed into Virginia where we camped up for two nights in Shenandoah national park. We enjoyed a scenic hike and Ron tried to teach me how to play American football, I can now throw the ball like a pro (most of the time). Whilst eating our campfire fare a black bear came wandering through the campsite, very ... read more

We've had a delightful summer at the Spokane RV & Golf Resort in Deer Park, Washington... the golf course as our back yard; very good friends; dry, hot weather just right for golf. We had concerts at Arbor Crest Winery, a boat tour on Lake Pend Orielle, a blues festival at Cusick, a jet boat trip on the Snake River, and golf, golf, golf. Perfect! The highlight of the summer was a "cousin" reunion at Robinson Lake, family property in north Idaho. Of the fifteen first cousins (all descendants of W.D. and Almeda LaMotte), twelve made it to the reunion, some traveling from as far away as Florida, Illinois, and Texas. With family, we numbered about 33 at dinner the final night. Planning for the next reunion in 2012 - also the 100th anniversay of ... read more

We love NYC! We love this city We were on our way to our lovely little Lutheran sanctuary. We got the start of true NY hospitality with our cranky non-english speaking new york shuttle bus driver and chris and I were in a 4 person manwhich weaving through the honking streets. Being the good little lutherans we are, we had separate rooms but they were very nice and clean, ( thanks for the recommendation Jane and Liz!) and Chris suspiciously took the one overlooking the ladies gym. After some tv initiation we headed out for some dinner and to explore the NYC nightlife. Took me a while to get my bearings and I jumped at almost every strange looking thing we saw, which is a lot of jumping for NYC. By the end of the trip ... read more

The Missions of San Antonio I have a picture in my mind: there’s this little Franciscan monk wearing a black robe. He has a fringe of hair around an odd-looking bald spot. The sun is hot, maybe a hundred and ten degrees. This guy is lugging fifty and sixty pound rocks across an empty clearing and piling them carefully one on top of the other. Maybe he pauses to take a drink of tepid water. Maybe he takes a second to wipe his brow. Maybe he prays. As my “eye camera” draws back from a perspective in the clouds somewhere, I see many of these dark shapes moving across a desolate clearing carved out of a savage desert. What are they doing? Why are they doing what they’re doing? They are building Missions - churches. They ... read more

Just wanted to add a few more thoughts/reflections on what has to be one of the most memorable weeks of my life. I can't speak for the team today because I'm no longer with them, but based on the comments throughout the week, I think many of us had similar feelings to all that we experienced. As I wrote yesterday's blog, all I could think is how do I ever put into words all that we experienced this week. I know I've kept you up on the factual stuff of the projects we did this week and the joy of seeing a foundation become a house, but it's been difficult to describe the feeling involved with it. The blisters, the scrapes, the sore joints--they all pale in comparison to the difference this is going to make ... read more
