It was sad saying goodbye to Yellowstone but we were 100% ready to be at the same place for a few nights in a row and looking forward to checking into the Jackson Lake Lodge. Three nights people! We’ve complained about roadside signage before, it’s true. But, the Rockefeller Parkway has given us hope for roadway signs everywhere. Imagine traveling along at 60 mph and seeing a row of signs every 100-200 yards or so... We saw wildlife from afar until we hit them with our car. Slow down! Quality. It was also amazing watching the landscape change. The biggest noticeable difference were the wildflowers. The Grand Teton National Park is so close and still so different to Yellowstone. It was amazing to experience the change and drive up to t... read more

July 29 – Denver to Redstone – Today I finished loading up the “last minute” stuff in my truck that had to wait till just before I left and headed out on 470 to I-70 and then started the climb up into the mountains. All the extra load that I was carrying in my truck didn’t seem to be bothering it and I climbed on up westward. Traffic wasn’t too bad and it was raining a “nuisance” rain which just wet the windshield enough for me to have to keep turning the wipers on and off. I got lucky again and the blasting at the twin tunnels east of Idaho Springs didn’t slow me down or stop me this time. So I continued on climbing up and then over the Divide at the Eisenhower Tunnel and ... read more

Hello everyone, here is the next instalment of the Saunders family road trip. The evening of our first night here we ventured out up the strip to see Vegas at night. When I say we ventured out I mean we walked through interconnected hotels designed to prevent you from going outside. However, we did get some good snaps of the Luxor, Excalibur, New York New York, Monte Carlo, The MGM Grand and of course the Bellagio (all hotels). The following morning we ventured down to the casino floor in search of some breakfast where Fred and Kit found something called the Ultimate Breakfast so naturally we stopped there so they could have it. We then moved to the Aquarium, which is all still inside a hotel, which has lots of predators of the seas in tanks ... read more

Today while I did laundry and cleaned the inside of the trailer, Joe cleaned the outside. Then it was time to tag team and give the dogs their baths. Since today was our last day in a big camp in Alaska, we all decided having a "goodbye Alaska" BBQ was what we needed to do for dinner. Salmon, steaks, hamburgers, beans, camp potatoes and mixed vegetables were the menu. Of course we had to have dessert so Jon and Joyce provided the banana cream pie. Our goal 3 months ago was to see as much of Alaska as we could in 5 weeks, and we all agreed we did just that. While the 3 months seems to have flown by, all I have to do is talk to the grandkids back home and I am reminded ... read more

Our team joined together to share dinner with one of the partner families we'll be working with this week. The Sherman family, John and Sunshine, along with their three children, Jade, Kayla and Steven are excited for their new home and eager to start on the construction. Madison and Scott from the Joplin Habitat for Humanity affiliate shared information and statistics from the 2011 tornado. Over 8,000 buildings (homes and businesses) were damaged or destroyed and over 17,000 residents were displaced from their homes. As they went through their presentation, a question on the slides caught my attention. What will you build? After dinner, we had our first team reflection and I asked the team...during this week, what will you build? Here are the responses shared: relationships, knowledge about what happened, memories, hope, a simpler life, ... read more

Half of the team has arrived in Joplin after an overnight stay in St Louis, MO. While in St. Louis, Pam, Emily, Kris, Carrie, Dan and Mary took the opportunity to walk downtown to see the Arch. It is an understatement to say the Arch is an amazing architectural design, and what it represents and holds at its core, it also amazing and inspiring. To think of our ancestors exploring this great country and traveling West to lands unknown for a better life reminds me a little of the reason we are here in Joplin, to help families improve their lives through owning a house they can call home! The rest of the team is in route to Joplin and due to arrive within the next few hours. It will be exciting to be together for ... read more

Just four days remain until we leave. Our bags are not even close to being packed and the list of things we have to do before we leave is getting longer every day. Not a good sign! Nonetheless, excitement is really building for our big adventure. When asked yesterday what one thing we're most looking forward to, Nick's answer was the day with elephants in Chiang Mai, Sand's answer was the Asian food (and the looooong 20,000+ miles of flights!), Ben said the fancy electric toilets of Tokyo and Carys is keen to see monkeys in Bali! We have a broad mix of things planned, so hopefully something for everyone. I suspect we're going to need another holiday to get over this one.... read more

Today we journeyed from Cape Cod to Bangor ME. We made a choice to front load our trip with some long, highway days so we could relax for the rest of the trip. When we set out at 8 am, we expected to encounter rain off and on all day. We lucked out. The rain held off and we even had some sunshine. On Rt 95 below Boston, we happened upon a car with Tim and Anna, some friends and Anna's mom. This wasn't planned and we certainly did not expect to meet them on the road. Too funny. We loved riding through the Big Dig, the tunnel under Boston. Riding through on a motorcycle made me feel like I was in thr Tron movie! Once we reached Portland ME, we both relaxed. We started seeing ... read more

Pavane's home port is Brewers Cowesett Marina in East Greenwich. This is a great place to keep a boat but it is a mile-and-a-half walk into East Greenwich proper. So if you are just visiting East Greenwich for a night or two, this is what you should do. Once you are safely in Greenwich Bay, head South West and into Greenwich Cove. The East Greenwich Yacht Club (EGYC) manages most of the moorings in Greenwich Cove. In the days when we "just visited" here, they always found us a nice comfortable mooring. Greenwich Cove is a pretty place. The yacht club provides launch service but, if you prefer to row, your mooring will probably be within 100 yards of the dock. The club has some of the most civilized shower facilities in New England. Once ashore, ... read more
