Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Hampton area of Virginia Possibly because of light traffic, we “dry camped” at the south parking lot of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. We want to make the crossing in the morning when we are fresh as this has been a long day - over 350 miles. Camping and overnight parking isn’t normally an option at the south end, but we prevailed on a nice security officer (the area has 24 hour security and is lighted) and got the thumbs up to stay the night. We “cooked” a wonderful sunset and dinner (hot dogs and a black bean salad) at our parking spot near the pier - our RV table window was so close to the bay as to make it seem like we were looking out a cruise ship window. We have full ... read more

The greyhound trip from Atlanta to Richmond was less eventful! The only mentionable thing was that we were nearly two hours late in departing, due to over crowding on the coach! I wonder if we will ever go on a journey on the greyhounds that leave on time?? When we arrived to Richmond we took a taxi to our hotel. The driver got lost and it ended up costing us more!! Ripped off. But we were happy to just get there after a 11 hour journey! The lobby of our hotel appeared to be nice and the man behind the front desk was nice and polite. We had a bit of banter with him about the greyhounds. Then we went up to the room….. Not really nice at all. After I checked everything for bed bugs, ... read more

I had forgotten about Daylight Savings Time. I’m not referring to the usual Sunday, or even Monday morning, social embarrassment of “Oops, I forgot to change my clock,” but rather I forgot that Daylight Saving Time was even coming up. What with the baby and all, it just wasn’t a consideration. So last week I was explaining to a new rider on the Monday night club ride from East Coast Bikes that we would be riding mountain bikes until the Daylight Savings kicked in, when we would switch to road bikes. I think it was Bill who pitched in, “That’s next week.” “What?” I asked, jumping in surprise, “Daylight Savings is next week. ‘Spring forward’ on Sunday.” “Really?” “Yup. I’ve been keeping track of it since December.” “Cool!” Fast forward a week, and thunderstorms were predicted ... read more

G'day and greetings. I am in the process of planning a trip to Ireland, so there is not a whole lot to talk about yet; just a guy with a laptop and a pile of travel books. Although Sandra (my wife) is travelling to India for work in a few weeks. That might be quite exciting. Pity I'm not going, though.... read more

Welcome to my travel blog. This will chronicle the journey I am making to South America starting tomorrow. I’m visiting an old friend who works in Pilar, Paraguay as a Peace Corps volunteer. They say Paraguay is not the most interesting country on the continent, but it should be interesting experiencing another culture, seeing what kind of work the Peace Corps is doing down there and we may hop across the border of Argentina or Brazil to see the Ingassu Falls, a sight I’m told makes Niagara look like a leaky faucet. The first part of my journey will be the drive to JFK Airport in New York. It was supposed to be cheaper flying out of NYC, but schedule changes in the flights have may my connecting flights to JFK untenable. So I’m just going ... read more

Since this is our first entry, I feel the need to give some background. As I’m sure many of my friends would agree, I am a little impatient at times so I may not cover everything in this first entry so, expect more entries to come. Also, I’m sure Kel will want to add her two cents in here as we progress. She is a MUCH better writer than I am…you’ll see. Some background to start this whole adventure off: Kel and I met in 2000 when we both started working at Capital One. While we worked in different departments, we started training together with a group of 22 other “college hires” who were slated to be Front Line Managers in call centers and other production areas. When we first met, neither of us were interested ... read more

Greetings from Arlington I am currently navigating my very messy. half packed up apartment. The only one who seems to be having an adventure is Hannah the cat. She is spending time exploring many boxes and drawers and I trying not to trap her in them. I am hoping this adventure gets better. Here is a photo of of our pub trivia home.... read more

Things didn't go as planned last night...but then when have then gone according to plan with our new child? Jenn spent the last nine weeks of her pregnancy on bedrest, but she held out through numerous bouts of contractions until week 37 , when she would be able to give birth in the midwifery center, as her dream had always been. But at 10pm last night, our midwife said, "Uh oh..." and called in the attending obstetrician. A quick look with the sonogram confirmed that our baby was breech- turned the wrong way. Natural, breech births are risky, and even more risky for unproven, first-time moms. So Jenn, the labor and delivery nurse studying to be a midwife found herself being prepped for a caesarian section. And it wasn't the warm, soothing experience that we had ... read more

Baby, it’s cold outside. My pregnant wife is huddled up under the quilt with the dog to watch a John Cusack romantic comedy that she’s already seen a dozen times. Meanwhile out in the garage, I’m holding my hands atop a space heater so decrepit that I can actually hold my hands atop it without burning them off, hoping that my fingers will thaw enough to thread a new shifter cable. In the flickering fluorescent light my breath puffs up in clouds, and I step warily past the patch of ice in front of the double doors. I doublewrap my handlebars: new tape for this season atop white tape gone grimy from last season. This year I’m going with black tape, hoping that it won’t show the miles nearly as much. In the cold I curse ... read more

Virginia Beach Restaurant Last year I took a business trip up to VA for the company I work for. They put me up in a decent Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel. I had to go speak at a convention and this hotel was close to the meeting. It was really boring. Experts going on and on about how they will improve production and streamline the process. It just meant more software and hardware to purchase. Afterwards I ate at this great vegan restaurant called Fresh Fare. The next day was the 2nd of a 4 day event. Luckily a fire broke out in the room from the buffet table and we all had to leave. I called up 411 for some meeting rooms in Virg... read more
