Friends of Shari, I just spoke to our intrepid hiker today...from some little town in Virginia. Her beginning days went well, even though hurricane Ernesto was still dumping buckets. She averaged between 10 and 14 miles per day during the horrid weather. That is amazing! The weather has finally cleared up for her...but a new problem has come up. She apparently injured a bursa sac in her knee. She managed to get off the trail and into a small town. After a day or so of ice and rest she'll make a decision whether to see a doctor or to get back on the trail. I know how bummed she'll be if she only does those 40 miles or so. I'll keep you all posted on her progress but in the meantime please join me in ... read more

“How’s it feel to be done?” my mom asked. “Done?” In the eighteen years I had known of BMB, and during the nearly two years of preparation I had never really thought of being “Done” with it. I had read webpages and books on long-distance riding, prepared my body and bike for the rigors of riding through the night, night after night. I’d ridden out before the weekday dawn on training rides. I had slipped into my cubicle at work with a little smile on my face as I traded my biking cleats for the office shoes kept stashed under the desk, thinking, “I rode forty miles this morning, and dang! I feel good.” I had cursed myself as I made just one more online order for biking gear, “Darn it honey, this is the last ... read more

Now that I have been back in the US for awhile, I thought I'd reflect on my trip and what I have learned. As my plane left US soil last January, I thought about how my life would never be the same. I was right that I would come back a changed person; I just didn't realize how completely different my life would be. Many people expect that you will just pick up where you left off and that things will essentially be the same, but it is simply not possible. A journey like this always changes you, usually for the better. As many of you already know, Stevan and I have separated and he has moved back to Belgrade. This has been a really difficult time for me. I won't go into the painful details ... read more

Here's a trivia question for all you history and anthropology enthusiasts: Which European country has the tallest people? . . . Sorry, Jessie, it isn't Germany. . . . Nope. . . guess again, Nadja. . . . It's the NETHERLANDS! Who would have thought? Apparently, the average height of a Netherlander has increased an astonishing TEN INCHES since 1945, thanks to better nutrition. Now, the average man is 6'1" and the average woman is 5'7". Isn't that incredible? ... read more

This is the 16th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Nova Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Sat 19AUG06 Yesterday I passed a caravan of 10 new school buses traveling in the slow lane. They were not letting any one in the line and thus were playing havoc at entrance ramps. They were not loaded with kids and looked like new buses being delivered Laidway or something like that was painted on the buses. Well today I passed school buses again. These were older and were in pairs. One would be towing second one. One of these buses was pulling a flat bed trailer, that had a panel van and a trailer on the ... read more

Ever since April, when I found out that I had definitely been accepted to study abroad in SCOTLAND, several of my lovely readers have been demanding that I start a travel blog to chronicle my adventures. Their demands were quite flattering, and after all, I can't disappoint my public. So I am launching this excellent blogue (British spelling ;)) (not really) to keep everyone posted on my doings. One of my friends once told me that my emails to her sounded "weird," because she wasn't used to hearing me talk for long uninterrupted intervals, so she had no idea what such an occurrence would sound like. Prepare yourselves for a similar epiphany! So far, my preparations for my trip have consisted of: watching acclaimed BBC series The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin and Blackadder, reading ... read more

I'm getting very excited about my trip. It's been three years since I last completed a section of the Appalachian Trail. This time I'll be going out at my lightest body weight I've ever had for backpacking and expect to do strong miles! My pack is repaired. My boots are broken in. My sleeping bag will be in any day now (so they tell me). You may want to know about why "Second Chance." When I first started a thru-hike in 1998, I lasted a whole 3 days/20 miles before succumbing to bronchitis, tendonitis and ignorance. I attended to all three problems and in the interim, hiking friends gave me the trail name of Second Chance and I headed out on the trail where I'd left off 4 weeks after my first start. That trip I ... read more

So after 900 miles of qualifying rides, months of preparation and years of dreaming, I finally received my acceptance package from the organizers of the Boston-Boston-Montreal 750-mile brevet, addressed to “Rider #40, Wes Cheney.” Rider Number Forty. I don’t think that an hour goes by without my mind straying to BMB. Easily a quarter of front of the refrigerator is now devoted to BMB; from a training chart to the elevation profile of the ride, a checklist for my dad following in the support RV, and a list of my checkpoint time goals. Rider Number Forty. It’s a nice, round number. Since it’s an even number, my wife Jenn likes it. I received a number card for my bike and helmet, as well as a set of stickers for my support vehicle, my parent’s new RV. ... read more
