And finally we are off! We set off this morning around 9am after some emotional goodbyes. I think the family are so used to the tearful goodbyes that we normally have when going back to London that they didn’t really believe that this time we will only be gone for a matter of weeks not months or years. We started our journey heading North through Virginia to Washington DC. The quicker more obvious route would have been to take I-95 straight up; however this trip is not about taking the quickest or the easiest routes. It’s all about taking our time and going the scenic route. So what better way to start our trip than by heading up the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Appalachian Mountains?! Fortunately we managed to stay ahead of the forecasted rains ... read more

In June we stopped in Charlotte on our way back from Florida. We went on to Wilkesboro and visited Tom (Hang Your Head Down) Dooley’s birthplace-yes he was a real person. Then off to the most pristine and beautiful Shennendoah Valley. Over the 4th of July we toured the Appomattox Court House in Virginia, Patrick Henry’s home, Woodrow Wilson’s home and Poplar Forest where Thomas Jefferson had his retreat from politics. Tom and I golfed for the first time in 2 years (he had a bum elbow.) We arrived in Hershey PA July 15th and toured the CHOCOLATE factory. We’ll stay here for a couple of weeks before heading to the Allegheny National Forest. A couple pics to look at. One from St. Simmons Island in GA where Charles & John Wesley preached the birth of ... read more

On our way from GA to NY we stopped in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. We watched the blacksmith work and saw various reinactments of historical events. It was a very educational experience. ... read more

I have tried to figure out exactly how long it really took me to get home and my best guess is around 25 hours from start to finish. So yes, I made it home safely and no, I have no freaking idea what time my body thinks it is. Who ever invented that whole dateline thing was a truly cruel individual. Of course they did a lot of traveling by ship back then so it probably didn't come in to play at 15 knots per hour. Anyway, I just wanted to let those of you that have been following along know that I am home and happy to be here (except for all that grass I have to cut). I think that's one of the best parts about traveling is getting to go home and appreciate ... read more

Please forgive the title...sometimes my characteristic verbosity and penchant for superfluous writing gets the better of me. Well, I made it home, obviously. Coming home wasnt everything I anticipated in some ways, but in some ways it exceeded my expectations. Overall and completely...its definitely good to be home. Its funny though, that my parents left to go out of town 2 days after I got back though. They had a long planned trip to Massachusetts, and I chose not to go in favor of working. I have a temporary paid-internship at Classical Movements Inc, essentially a travel agency, but for huge organizations like the National Symphony Orch. and the Boston Philarmonic and such. It is tour season, so it is really hectic at the office, but I like it. I'll also be getting my security clearance ... read more

This morning was weird - I woke up in Nashville, of course, but it took a few seconds for that to register when I first woke up. So in the meantime, I was all, "Um, *where* am I?" All good, we figured it out. And I had company for most of the night - the creature known only as "White Kitty" kept me from feeling lonely. Seriously guys, that cat needs a name before it develops serious behaviourial difficulties. Dave and I took Winston the dog for a walk as Brooke got ready for work, then after some coffee I was off. Up through Tennessee and Virginia, which proved to be a lot bigger than I imagined! (Granted, the interstate takes pretty much the longest path imaginable through the state on the way to DC...) It ... read more

My Travel Route For those of you that are curious as to what my route to Cambodia will look like, I have created a map so you can see just how far it is. I never paid much attention in school when they were talking about the shortest distance between two points stuff. Looks like fun, huh? This will be my only entry until I have actually departed. I may or may not be able to make entries during the actual travel portion of the trip. I have several lengthy layovers so I will see if I can't find a hotspot somewhere along the way. One can only plan so much... My wife is not one who likes to plan. She is incredibly spontaneous which is a marvel to me. I ,on the other hand, am one who fears spontinaity. I like to know where I'm going, when, and how I plan to get there. At the beginning of this trip planning I was gung ho about reading everything I could about each country of Europe. Then after being informed, I would make some choices about whwre I'd like to travel and what our timelines would be like. I started off reading about Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece...but all of that reading has come to an end. There is only so much reading one can do before one gets exhausted, confused and bored. At this point I have decided to lay off ... read more

Five days remaining. In five days I will be in the splendid land of Guatemala, which, had I not read a handy little travel guide, I would not have known has jaguars. Wonderful. Of course, I will not be anywhere near jaguars, I'll be high in the mountains where it's sure to be wonderfully cold and crowded and jaguar-less. High points will include: -Weaving lessons -Volunteer work -Hiking Chicabal volcano. -A trip to Panajachel to visit Atitlan Lake -Visiting a chocolate factory. -A trip to Antigua. -A visit to COPAVIC. -Assorted dealings with local highschools. Not to mention the one on one instruction in Spanish for five... read more
