Sirs, Ma'ams: How are you? I've just dropped Caitlin off at work and am now looking forward to an afternoon's cruising around Downtown Richmond in the Miata. The seats are still wet from driving back through a downpour last night, from an outdoor concert in the Botanic Gardens . Thankfully the thunderstorm held off until "Special Ed and the Short Bus" had finished their set. It's difficult to pick out a favourite song but the highlights were definitely the dolphin chorus and the armpit solo. Wet pants seem to be a way of life here. Back on Roslyn Hills Drive, I spent a very pleasant evening sitting out on the porch under a stormy Southern sky, with the frogs croaking and the fireflies flirting, in the delightful company of a couple of chilled Newcastle Brown ales, ... read more

My mind’s always spinning. Constantly keeping a list of things that I’ve gotta do in my head. My bicycle commute in the morning becomes a traveling zen moment. At my best I weave the three and a half miles to work in an unstopping spinning of pedals, dissecting my movement into inches at traffic lights, near-motionless in the balancing act of a track stand, sliding behind buses, waving to friends on foot, smiling at the other bicyclists. Every block of so a bubble of analytic thought rises to the surface of awareness, and I slip past it, immersing myself again in the sound of the early morning city around me, slipping around potholes, sliding around parking cars before finally parking my own bike and stepping into the corporate elevator, a box within a box designed to ... read more

This is mainly a test to make sure my subscriber list works. The catch is that in order for it to work you have to write more than a three line "this is a test" message. I guess its to block spammers. Anyways what follows is a testament to my college education....writing for length and not content...so if you're bored feel free to read it...if not...I'm not here to judge...do whatever you want. So I figure I'll lay down some ground rules for myself before the trip: Rule 1) The average temperature in India this time of year is close to 105 degrees. I knew this when I signed up. Therefore I forbid myelf to bitch about it. If I do all readers of this blog have the responsibility to call me on it. Rule 2) ... read more

As we speak I'm sitting in the living room with the family watching (unfortunately) Prince perform on the season finale of "American Idol". Just finished up shopping and am waiting for the last load of laundrey to finish up so that I can get to packing. I'm still in sort of a state of suspended belief and cannot really comprehend the enormity of the trek I am about to take. But first I'm off to Houston first thing in the morning (and I mean first thing). I'm a little worried about the money situation, but if this trip is even half as good as it's shaping up to be then it'll be worth every penny. Make no mistake, I am ready for this. Japan hasn't seen an arrival this huge since Godzilla first rose from his ... read more

This has got to be one of the most amazing things I've ever done! One behalf of California and North Carolina I presented a wreath at the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknow Soldier. It was so tear jerking... I'm a huge supporter of our boys and girls fighting for us. After all the talks that were heald in the coliseum everyone headed around back to get ready for the ceremony. On the way to the back I passed a few soldiers.... God they were so tall. I felt really small, not just because of their height, but just because they were so great. When we walked out in front of that audience and approached the second soldier you feel this great deal of pride... it's hard to explane. But the whole thing ... read more

So, its been a few months since our last entry. In that time we have gotten answers to some of our questiosn and done some initial planning. As our plane leaves on the 7th of November, time appears to be disappearing quickly so the sense of urgency to get things planned, or at least partially planned, increases. Questions and Answers What to do with our house Thanks to much cajoling my co-worker and friend Jeffrey has decided to rent our house fully furnished for the next year. It took a little convincing that moving further from work.city was a good idea but I think the fact that he wasn't going to pay more than he does now for his apartment was what really made it all possible. This allows us to keep all our stuff there ... read more

Hello! We are living in Virginia Beach until such time as the military tells us to leave. I will journal our time spent here and what we see and do! We moved here from New Orleans, Louisiana in March, which is where I spent most of my life. It's truly sad what the city has become since Katrina....landmarks that I was familiar with flattened, destroyed. What a refreshing breath of air this city is. Clean, organized. I look forward to seeing it. ... read more

Eastern Shores, Virginia The great Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel emptied us out at a wonderful peninsula called the Eastern Shore section of Virginia. We first found a quaint Forrest Gump sort of place called Willis Wharf on the Atlantic side and saw fishermen getting ready to go out and huge - 5 or 6 foot piles of oyster shells. Next we took a turn toward the Chesapeake side and discovered a wonderful artsy town, of Onancock, Va. A passenger ferry leaves from very attractive marina and small wharf area. The landing sits next to Hopkins Bros. historic store which is now a restaurant called Mallery’s. There are lovely homes along the Charlotte River which empties into a deep harbor on the bay. We found a great place for a cup of coffee at Bizzotto’s Gallery Café, ... read more
