...that was Sherry and I this morning, just a couple of migrant agricultural laborers, earning our keep picking beans, peppers, zucchini and squash (see photos). Mike & Seaona have a lovely old farmhouse with a large garden that produces almost too much for them to keep up with. We were able to help Mike catch up on their picking this morning. In return we got a nice night of sleep, and we left their place this morning with two bags full of fresh veggies: * Bag 1 - wax beans and zucchinis to cook up at my sister's place here in Alexandria * Bag 2 - banana peppers (rumored to be hot) for Sherry's dad in Georgia... ...but here I am expounding upon produce. Could anyone be finding this interesting? As indicated, we're at sister Lesley's ... read more

Greetings family & friends. If you reading this journal then consider yourselves the chosen few to share in my journey to the Far East. This first entry is a test run to see exactly how travelblog works. You see, I am still sitting in my room in Northern Virginia...I haven't left...yet. Brent and I fly out of Dulles Friday at noon. We land in Narita Tokyo Saturday at 3 or so. We'll drop our bags at the camp director's house. Catch some sleep. Wake up Sunday and catch the rail to Kyoto, Japan. I am giving this travelblog a try to share with all you what I see, hear, & do while I am in Japan. I am going to try an update and send an entry out once a week. All of you are going ... read more

Hi folks. We've been here in Eastern VA (Hartfield to be exact) since June 22. We're parked in an empty lot on Wilton Creek Road, just up the road from Alan's brother's house. We were planning to stay just 2 weeks, but Alan had a retina problem which required another eye surgery. He's OK, but we'll have to stay put until he gets the doc's OK to leave (could be another week or so). Good thing we're near Richmond, where we found a retina specialist. Got to see niece Nicole play soccer in Norfolk (her U15 team won the PA state championship and they played in a regional tournament.) Bought my first fishing rod and reel but haven't used it yet! Alan's brother Tom (retired Air Force) drove us around Langley Air Force base, I had ... read more

When we last wrote, we were ahead of schedule and had only 600 miles to ride to the Virginia coastline. After the Appalachians were going to be home free. We had only one more state ahead of us and a reasonable riding schedule planned…Suddenly the Atlantic felt just too close for comfort- the reality of finishing the trip and acting like adults loomed. So, we balked. Instead, we blazed a quick trail south following the tracks of Daniel Boone through the Cumberland Gap and crossing Tennessee in one day. The Great Smoky Mountains After a 100-mile day of riding, we arrived in Gatlinburg, TN at 10pm on a Tuesday night, expecting a sleepy-town nestled at the foot of the mountains where we could lay our bikes and our heads. Instead, what we got was a theme ... read more

Hi all- We are in the throws of moving out of our house. It's hard to believe that soon we will be starting our long journey to Thailand with toddler and two cats in tow. I’m about to embark on my 5th trip to Europe. I returned from England this past Dec. after studying abroad at the University of Leicester (where I had an amazing time). Before my time in England I backpacked for 3 weeks (not nearly long enough) throughout the UK, Ireland and Spain. Despite my love for Ireland and the UK (where I will hopefully be living after I graduate college this fall) I decided this time I would go elsewhere. The trip is gonna go a little somethin like this: Paris - Nice - Florence - Rome - Venice - Bern - Interlaken - Lucerne - Vienna - Prague - Berlin - Amsterdam So this travel blog will be a great way to save my memories so when I’m old and boring I’ll be able to look ... read more

The rain has been coming down pretty heavy since the middle of the night. It's nice...different than Albuquerque! Wednesday, Me, Ben, and his Mom went to see the National Museum of the American Indian. It was phenomenal. Whoever the architect was--what a genius! It looks like a giant mesa, with waterfalls and streams outside. There are lots of pretty plants--native to the area. The exhibits focused a lot on the present--which I liked quite a bit. On the east coast, people seem to forget that Native Americans are still alive. There were really great displays--innovative. Anyways--go check it out. I will post some pic's of it tomorrow or sometime soon. The internet connection here is pretty slow and crappy. So it takes forever and then the pictures look yucky. Yesterday Ben and I went to Arlington. ... read more

So, this will be pretty quick 'cause I'm on a dialup connection. To make a long drive short--Lotsa dead armadillos. Oklahoma smells like skunk. Big thunderstorm in Arkansas. Ben and I are now at his parents' house in Fairfax, VA. On the way we stopped at Weyers Cave, VA to visit my Uncle and Aunt on my mom's side. They entertained us for lunch! ...They now have five cats. We went to Herndon, VA yesterday to put flowers on my other Uncle's grave. I was happy that we had an easy time finding it! Today we wore ourselves out in DC. Went to all the outdoorsy stuff--WWII memorial, Reflecting pool, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, White House, etc. Also stopped in Air and Space Museum and the American History Museum. Tomorrow Ben's mom is coming with us ... read more
