Hey everyone...I just wanted to test the travel log that I am trying to set up. I think that I'll just update this webpage every so often with stories and pics and then send out an email tell everyone that I have made an update. I will also be sending out the occasional personal emails. Also; if you would like postcards, then send me your mailing address. -Chris... read more

PFFffft... "Oh, geesh..." I was cold, but not so cold that I wanted to warm up by getting off my bike and walking the final two blocks home. But after running over a good-sized chunk of glass (judging by how fast I lost all tire pressure) I didn't have much choice. I could either sit around in the cold night air & try to change my tire in the dark, or I could walk back hime & change my tire in warmth & light. I chose warmth & light at the end of a long, dark night. I also once again confirmed my hypothesis that there is an inverse relationship between property values and the size and amount of glass shards on the adjoining streets. Let me just say that I did not flat out in ... read more

A sunny Sunday afternoon in Indian Summer beckons to a bicyclist. The air moves with a gentle breeze, panoply of steak and hamburg grilled on charcoal and gas, with just a touch of deet. The sun is sinking low into the sky, another two hours of daylight remaining, at most. A twenty-mile ride into the sun on a warm, clear afternoon awaits. Suburbia sprawls ahead to the horizon, a maze of boulevards (minus the requisite trees) and avenues (not wide enough to bear the name). Cars roar by at 30, 40, 50 miles per hour, and yet the ride begins, slowly picking up speed as lungs open up and the heart quickens. A momentarily empty stretch of four lane, divided blacktop ahead, and no cars behind. A quick tuck down onto the aero bars hanging ... read more

7:43 AM and two miles from work. I'm waiting at a red light, ready to clip in to my pedals and turn left as soon as the light turns green. A car pulls up beside me, but I ignore it in favor of the traffic light. A familiar voice catches my ear though, "Hey man, whassup?" I turn to see my coworker Leon sitting in his car. I smile and return his greeting, "Just trying to get to work...Ya know, I betcha I'll beat you into the office." Leon chuckles and says, "You might be able to." "Yup, especially since you've got to drive up to the seventh or eighth floor of the parking garage. Going round and round in circles, that really eats up a lot of time." "Alright man, you're on," Leon replied as ... read more

Tomorrow night I will be sleeping in Manhattan as I prepare for the Republican National Convention. I'm not quite sure what to expect, but I've felt led to be there. I've often regretted not being in Philadelphia for the Republican National Convention in 2000. I'm certain that I would feel far more regret if I did not head up to New York for this year's convention. I hope to be able to post some of the photographs I shoot next week on my website: WesCheney.com . I'm not going to New York to commit acts of civil disobedience or anarchistic violence, nor am I going as a convention delegate. Rather, I want to be in New York as an engaged observer, a participatory witness. There are no uninvolved, passive observers- merely be observing an observer participates ... read more

Today I drove home from Ashburn, Virginia to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Riding solo gives you plenty of time to think, listen to music, eat junk and get bored.  In the town of Breezewood (Pennsylvania?), I encountered a huge swarm of cicadas.  I got out of my car to get some gas and I literally stepped on dozens of these dead creatures.  Their were hundreds of them aimlessly swarming the sky and two of them even made it into my car.  I had to roll up the windows and suffer the heat. There was a semi that was flipped over just south of Detroit that delayed my trip for about an hour.  I was extremely bored for this hour as I just wanted to be home to visit my fiancee. Made it to Grand Rapids around 8 ... read more

Dave and I fixed my car this morning (fuel leak) and then decided to take a bike ride to a town called Leesburg.  There was a really nice trail that we took.  7.5 miles to Leesburg.  When we got to Leesburg, we stopped for a sandwich at the really cool italian deli called Pruccio's or something.  The owner was very italian and a really nice guy.  Then we rode our bikes back to Dave's house in Ashburn.  I mowed Dave's lawn.  This is the first time that I used a lawnmower.  Can you believe that?  We had chili dogs for dinner that we grilled.  We ate out on the deck and enjoyed some good food and good conversation. I will be leaving for Colonial Beach, Virginia tomorrow morning to go to HP works to get my ... read more

Today I drove from my buddy Dave's house in Ashburn to Colonial Beach, Virginia.  The drive took a couple of hours and it was nice to finally see some water (the ocean) in the state of Virginia.  It seems to me that in all of Virginia there is not a single lake.  Hundreds of trees and mountains, but no lakes. Anyway, I took my honda civic to an auto shop in Colonial Park to be dyno tuned.  My engine fared quite well and I was pleased with the results.  The backroads were a joy to drive on my way back to Ashburn.... read more
