We set off on the I-90 initially, but moved quickly onto the I-10, heading in the Baton Rouge direction. Though we by-passed the place completely it was another name that reminded us we were well and truly in the USA! We passed a looooooong freight train on a bridge on the outskirts of New Orleans and my fondness for trains was being rekindled; the ones we were seeing were real workhorses, shifting cargo across the country and keeping it off the roads, which were degraded enough in this area as it was with all the traffic. Shredded tyres littered the verges and the roads and there was much more road-kill. There were bridges just everywhere and the roads skirted watery flatlands which were awash due to all the recent rain. We turned off the interstate onto ... read more

Our flight out of Chicago was delayed by 2 hours. "Had to make repairs on a scratched door" . We did not make our connection in Dallas. The next flight to Lima is tonight as there is only one flight per day to Lima. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu has been now routed through Dallas.... read more

Geo: 32.7831, -96.8067Glenn and I cashed in our AA Advantage miles for our flight from DFW to EZE (Buenos Aires, Argentina). We got out to the airport extra early, as we had to deliver the van back to Dany Smith.Once we boarded the plane, we started talking to a 73 year old man that was sitting directly in front of us. We told him we were boarding a cruise on Saturday and come to find out, he was getting on the same cruise ship. Bob Smith is from Austin. His wife died about 8 years ago and he has been traveling ever since. He just got off of a cruise ship, re-positioning from Barcelona to Houston, the Jade just 2 weeks earlier. And he is doing a back-to-back cruise, which he'll be on this cruise ship ... read more

We left San Saba about noon on Thursday. I didn't post for a couple of days because we were just trying to getting back to feeling normal. Les had an awful stomach virus and I was just fighting a bad bout of allergies. After about 36 hours of Les not being able to even keep 7-UP & crackers down, he finally started feeling some better. But he's been slow to gain his strength back. My allergies are better today too. We had to return to Odessa on Friday for a visitation prior to a funeral. The deceased was Les' brother's mother-in-law. We drove to Odessa this afternoon. We got to Midland about the time that Kim was getting off of work and Tish was picking Nae up from school. They met us at Taco Villa for ... read more

It was only a couple of days after returning home from a life abroad in Ireland that I began to notice a change. I would suddenly panic while driving, second-guessing myself about which is the correct lane; my emotions would roller coaster depending on a certain smell, song or picture, and I continued to wake up at 5:00 each morning. At first I thought I was losing my mind. The real culprit was reverse culture shock, and I had fallen into a slump that is common among many travelers. Where were the pubs blaring soccer matches, DJ sets, or live music from their dimly-lit interiors? How would I survive my constant cravings for Gino's and crepes? Why did this American food taste so unnatural? How many more times would I accidentally pay with quarters instead of ... read more

The weather forecast for Dallas wasn't too promising. Even so, we had no choice but to make the four to five hour journey across Texas with our friends Liz and Steve because they were taking us to see country music legend Kenny Chesney in concert. The sky was blue for the entire journey and none of the expected storms ever materialised. We all stayed in a beautiful apartment with a rooftop terrace to die for. The Dallas Cowboys stadium, where the concert was to take place, is located in the suburb of Arlington so that's where we were. We spent the evening at Hooters feasting on chicken wings and drinking beer. Russ managed to meet up with a friend he has known online since about 18 years ago. After so many years of corresponding, it was ... read more

Woke up at the hostel and checked the weather report. The ice storm did a lot of damage to Dallas and it was advised to stay off the road. I went out to take a look at my car. It was encased in ice and I had to use my ice scraper to shatter the ice while I set the heater to the highest level. Took a bit of time but I cleared the ice. I had spoken to my local friend Jillian at this point and we arrange a meetup at her place for pizza. I was considering heading into Dallas to look around but there was really nothing I wanted to see so I held off. So I have no pictures of Dallas landmarks. First time I ventured out was to drive Salira to ... read more
