My first stop in Charleston was Drayton Hall. Drayton Hall was built by John Drayton in the mid 1700’s using slave labor. It was the first example of Palladian architecture in North America and was located on the Ashley River about 15 miles from Charleston. It was the only plantation house on the Ashley River to survive intact through both the Revolutionary and Civil War. The plantation was based on indigo and rice production. Seven generations of Drayton heirs preserved the house in almost its original condition. The height markings for many of the heirs are still visible in one of the rooms. Next I took a city and harbor tour of Charleston. It was very hot and humid, heat index of 103 so it was good to be in the air conditioned bus. The tour ... read more

Geo: 32.7812, -79.9316Driving from Aiken was easy today. We arrived and checked in at The Spectator by 3 p.m. When we first drove up to the entrance to the hotel, four young men came out to welcome us and help us unload the car. One of them took it to their secure parking for the night. We didn't plan to drive to dinner tonight. Our room wasn't ready yet, so armed with a walking map of the area, we set out to find the Confederate Museum. It is just a few blocks from the hotel. Unfortunately, we arrived about five minutes before their scheduled closing time of 3:30. Seemed an odd time for a museum to close, but that's what they do. One of the employees was leaving the museum just as we were reading the ... read more

We headed back into the downtown this morning. We had booked to go on a boat cruise so headed to the wharf. We had a bit of time to wait and it was so hot, that we hid in the shade, until we saw people starting to head out onto the boat. The cruise lasted about an hour and a half and we sailed up and down the Cooper River. Our guide was very knowledgeable. I think he had been a history teacher before retiring and starting to work on the river cruises, he had a good head for all the dates and facts. It was really enjoyable to watch the scenery go by. We saw the houses that lined the shore, the same pretty and ugly ones we had seen the day before from land. ... read more

We headed into the main downtown area, to explore the city. Since we were staying so far out, we needed to take the car. I don't think there is any budget friendly accommodation in downtown Charleston. For breakfast, we stopped off at a small bakery near where we were staying for a quick bite and a coffee to have in the car. The food was okay, nothing to write home about. I think the drive to the centre of Charleston took about 10-15 minutes. We found a parking spot quite easily, always a bonus and set off to explore. We headed into Market Square to look around the stalls. The market is huge and there are loads of stalls selling a wide array of things. I did like the sweet grass baskets, which are a traditional ... read more

The drive from Savannah to Charles, our next destination would only take about two and half hours, so we decided to break it up and stop along the way. While researching, we found that Beaufort looked like a good place to stop, so we all decided that this would be a good place to break the journey and let us explore a little more of South Carolina. It only took us about an hour to reach Beaufort. We were also unsure how to pronounce the name 'Bewfort' or 'Bofort', I went for 'Bofort' and my friends for 'Bewfort'. The main place that we wanted to see was the Old Sheldon Church Ruins, which were in the opposite direction to the main town of Beaufort. We decided to head there first as we really wanted to see ... read more

Monday March 28,2016 ======================= Good Morning Everyone! Awoke around 5:30 to get the day started and assembled my suitcase and bag. Headed downstairs and waited for awhile and had a banana , too early for me to have breakfast. We said goodbye and were in the car around 7:20 am. Drove for awhile and then had a bathroom break and looked around the "Welcome and Visitor Center of North Carolina." Drove some more and listened to the news,n.p.r and music before stopping the "Visitor's Center of South Carolina." Finally got to a small sleepy town of Selma,SC around 11:45 am. Walked around a bit and found several Antique stores, looked around for awhile before getting back into the car for Lunch. Finished the meal around 1:45/2 pm and off towards Beidler Forest but soon found out ... read more

We had the usual buffet fare for breakfast and then headed into downtown Charleston across the Ashley River bridge. We had a walking tour booked with Tommy Dew starting at 11am so we had a little bit of time to kill so we headed south towards the end of the peninsula and Murray Boulevard where the quality of homes overlooking Charleston Harbour were amazing. Just house after house was in immaculate condition with beautiful gardens. We would find out later these homes whilst looking old are in the newer section of town built on reclaimed land but still over 100 years old. We got to the area known as The Battery that looks out to the Atlantic Ocean where you can see the famous Fort Sumter and headed up East Bay Street where the buildings just ... read more

Went to be quite late night last night trying to get the travel blog updated but slept right through until alarm went off at 7.15am. Went downstairs for breakfast at 8.30am where Sabrina organized another beautiful treat. We had french toast with layers of berries and a dollop of cream, an apple & nut cake, and some fresh fruit. The guests we met the previous morning staying at this B & B had all left and there were three other groups who were all from the Orlando region of Florida. We had already packed the car before breakfast so we were right to go straight away around 9am. We had considered driving to Charleston via Beaufort for a more scenic experience and when I discussed this with Sabrina she said it would be a good idea, ... read more

It's really happening. Our non-refundable tickets have been purchased to depart the homeland on December 6th and return January 7th. We will officially be spending our first Christmas as a married couple in Thailand and we could not be more thrilled. We are super excited and anxious and maybe a little bit terrified and cannot wait to embark on this journey together! Thank you so much to our family and friends that helped make this happen with their generous wedding gifts. We promise to try our very hardest to find free Wi-Fi as often as possible and update this blog with lots of photos!... read more

...began with a COCK-A-DOODLE-DOOOOO!!! Reminded me of when I was a kid. Happy memory. Yes, all the fine-feathered friends from the other side of the trees came back to visit this morning. Even more birds than yesterday. Mostly chickens. Besides the rooster, only one hen made any sort of noise. She had a nice, quiet, friendly cluck. The turkeys on the other hand, were quite vocal. We left the campground just in time. Drove through a short rain shower not too far down the road. Once we got going in the right direction to catch the freeway, we made a beeline to Savannah. Along the way we saw several billboards for peaches. One advertised a fruit stand called (you guessed it) James and the Giant Peach Stand. Another just said Peach Bread with the exit number. ... read more
