Today was a pretty relaxed day. We didn't have a schedule to adhere to so we decided to explore Stewart. We drove into town and stopped first at the Visitor Center. It was a very small room with a counter for making purchases and a bank of flyers and booklets of what to do in Stewart, BC and its sister city Hyder, AK, the surrounding communities, and the province of British Columbia. Next to the Visitor Center is a boardwalk that goes out over and across an estuary. There wasn't a lot of animal activity save for a few birds and a lone caterpillar. It was a nice walk out and back and even though today was cloudy and overcast, the views were beautiful. It just all seemed to fit well together. Stewart, British Columbia is ... read more

My alarm went off at 6:30 and I kept snoozing it until 7:00. Mike is always up way before me. He gets his coffee going, makes his toast (warm, dry bread), and feeds Charlie. After Charlie finishes his breakfast he has gotten into the habit of jumping up on the bed and going back to sleep ... tight against my head! Our routine of breaking camp went smoothly. So smoothly in fact that we left 15 minutes ahead of schedule. I could have hit that snooze button three more times! Just before we left, while Mike was in the park's bathroom, I showed Dave the giant bug that pinged off Mike's arm yesterday. It was still in the door cubby where it landed after I shook out my blanket. Dave said, "Yeah, that's a giant fly. ... read more

We woke at 6:00 to be on the road by 8:00. Today would be a long day. Yesterday while we were at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Center, Dave and Teri brought up concerns about staying where we had originally planned. The campground had high reviewer ratings, but we would be dry camping, meaning no water, no electricity and no sewer hookups. We decided to change our reservations and book the night at a place with lower ratings, but had full hookups. Our drive would take us down into BC for a short while before arching through YT and down into BC again. The lake we drove by yesterday was nothing compared to the lake we drove by on our way through Teslin. Teslin Lake is really long. I swear it was next to us for an ... read more

Holding my breath, I pressed the bottom of the rocker switch to retract the bedroom slide. It came in flawlessly. One down, one to go. After making sure everything was ready for travel I pressed the identical button to bring in the living room slide. I suppose it's really a dining room or kitchen slide because it houses the dining booth and pantry. Regardless, I pushed the button and the slide came in as if nothing happened last night. Yay! Wish we could figure out why the circuit keeps tripping. We only had a 200 mile drive today so mid-afternoon was our ETA. It always depends on road conditions and stops. Because of that, Teri adds two hours onto whatever Google maps shows as an arrival time. She's been pretty close every time. We were toolin' ... read more

Today was a long road day and we'd be heading back into wildfire smokey skies. I could smell a hint of it when I stepped out of the trailer this morning. It was all around us the moment we got on the highway. Back in our first week when we drove to Tok from Dawson City, Yukon we came down on Alaska Highway 5 (a.k.a. the Top of the World or Taylor Highway). When we reached the official end of the Alaska Highway at Delta Junction, AK we hadn't driven the entirety of the highway. We deviated in Watson Lake and drove north. Not far out of Tok we continued on Alaska Highway 2 (the Alaska Highway). Today's leg was part of the section of the Alaska Highway we missed on the way up. Have I ... read more

The RV park we stayed at was actually west of Glennallen. The road to and through Glennallen was pretty rough with all the frost heaves. It was like riding a kiddie roller coaster. It wasn't until well after Glennallen that the highway evened out enough to cruise along at 45 or 50 mph. Sadly, the thrill of the speed was short-lived and we were back to the lumpy, bumpy, pitted surface we'd grown accustomed to these past three weeks. There was even a short stretch of road construction we had to follow a pilot truck through as it wove its way between and around the big machinery. There wasn't much to look at until we were more than two hours into our drive. A few peaks of the Alaska Range then the range itself came into ... read more

Today was a rest and recover day before we pack up and head to Tok tomorrow. No plan meant I could be lazy and stay in bed until Mike became annoying with his pestering for me to get up. Later in the morning we went grocery shopping. We were out of ice cream and that just couldn't be allowed to happen. Oh, and we needed some other things like bread and bananas. We made our way up and down the aisles gathering the items on our list: bread, bananas, granola, yogurt and ice cream. We pulled up to the ice cream cooler to make our selection and my eyes bulged and my jaw dropped when I saw the price for a half gallon carton. Tillamook and Dryers were both $12.39. For a half gallon! Holy cow!! ... read more

Up at 5:30 so we could leave by 6:15. We have to meet our shuttle at 7:00 at the Visitor Center in town. Even Charlie thought it was too early. I finished getting everything together and ready then made some oatmeal for breakfast. I shouldn't have tried to do that at that time of the morning. I ran out of milk the other day (should have listened to Mike the last time we were at a grocery store) so I couldn't make my overnight oats. I looked at the container for directions and saw a microwave option. I put the water, oats and a pinch of salt in a microwave safe bowl, put a big cover over it so if I made a mess it wouldn't be all over the inside of the microwave. The directions ... read more

This morning I used the park's free shower to clean the road off me and wash my hair. The water smelled like rust! Upon closer inspection the shower curtain liner was stained a reddish brown as was the shower head. The water sprayed kinda wonky coming out of there, too. Great. Oh well, better to use their already messed up equipment than possibly ruin ours. Quick shower because I didn't want to be in that water any longer than absolutely necessary. Back at the trailer I looked at the water coming out of the faucet. It had a dirty yellow tint to it. Lovely. I ran it through our Brita pitcher and the yellow was a little lighter, but still there. Oh, yay. Tomorrow we'll be taking a bus into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and the ... read more

It rained again last night. I hope it didn't wash away ALL our trophy dust and dirt. How will people know we drove to Alaska and back if the truck and trailer aren't filthy when we pull up to the house?!? Our truck and trailer are the color of the dust and dirt so you can't see it anyway unless you get really close. From even a short distance it will still look the same as when we left. Our only hope is the tinted windows; they show dirt really well! It was raining again when Mike opened the door this morning to take Charlie out for his after breakfast walk. Charlie took one look outside and backed up as far as the leash would let him. When Mike turned to pick him up he dropped ... read more
