The Trip South - 2008 We arrived at the St. Mary’s River inlet after an overnight trip from Charleston, SC. We traveled out on the Atlantic Ocean, first in a calm but later with following wind and seas, that built to 22 knots and 6-8 feet. Once in the inlet, our first stop was just off the National Seashore at Cumberland Island. This is the first Barrier Island north of the Florida state line. We had made plans to meet up with our Canadian friends, Doug & Sharon, on the Beneteau 405 “About Time”. They had stored their boat in a boat yard in the small Georgia town of St. Mary’s for the summer and had just had her relaunched. We spend two days anchored off the park and enjoyed hiking through the live oak forests ... read more

“Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude! "Have courage to use your own understanding!"--that is the motto of enlightenment.” - Immanual Kant It is Friday November 7th and I left off in my last Blog talking about how I was totally exhausted and ready to leave Washington so I hoped in my car and hit the road. I was actually so tired that I had to stop about an hour outside Washington in Virginia and have a nap for an hour at one of the rest stops. I eventually hit the road again and ... read more

It rained all night last night. From about 7pm to at least 2 or 3 a.m. It got a littlewindy but nothing to complain about. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Charleston!!! Traveling here was perfect, beautiful, few residential areas, few clammers, few fisherman, few sailboats in the way, fast traveling cruising at about 25 knots, and the landscape is gorgeous! Cypress trees growing directly out of the water all along the Waccamaw river. Loves it! We passed through the 20 mile long undeveloped barrier island of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge including sand dunes, salt marshes, beach, maritime forests, and open water. Needless to say, this has been the most beautiful part of the trip. Downtown Charleston is AWESOME too! After arriving at the marina we had a few drinks at the connecting hotel then showered ... read more

We took the Amtrak train to Charleston and unfortunately our host fell through so we booked ourselves into the Notso Hostel for the two nights. It was an unusually laid out and run hostel with check in for only a couple of hours in the evening and only 2 showers and toilets to service everyone but it served the purpose of accomodation. The next day we walked into the downtown area from our hostel and passed a farmer’s market on the way with plenty of cute stall etc. Downtown area was a stark contrast to the neighbouring residential areas with it’s designers shops, art galleries and many eateries and pubs. It was a really pretty area and the Waterfront Park that led onto the bay was a nice stroll too. The water fountain in the park ... read more

08:15hrs and the 16 hours are over, and the greyhound dumps me at what looks like a roadside shack. Welcome to charleston greyhound station..... A staggering 100m within the city limits and 8 miles from where I need to be. Taxi!! What a taxi driver tho.. A black ex navy ghanian Jew...oi vey what a mix. The NotsoHostel was right on the edge of downtown charleston and was a typical wood boarded wide verandered house. The nice people there let me dump my stuff and sleep before the check in time of 5pm, a sweaty 8 hours away. Yes charleston is like a good woman... Hot and wet. The whole point of coming here tho was to see my kids, as my ex was in the area visiting her old employers. My original plan was to ... read more

Wow, the past few weeks have gone by incredibly fast and I have just under 3 weeks left here before I move on again to my next big adventure before making my way back to Alaska (which is in itself another adventure). It's going to be a busy 3 weeks though as this weekend I take off for Wilmington, NC to see my cousin, go scuba diving on a couple wrecks *smile*, tour around the campus that I spent 5 months of my life at, and sit on the sunny beaches of North Carolina again. Then next weekend is my Advanced Scuba diving class up at Lake Jocassee, SC and after...the dreaded REU participant research seminar where I give a powerpoint in front of the Biology Dept about my research this summer. It's going to be ... read more

It's been three weeks since we've (the REU people at USC) been in South Carolina and today, I took my first step in the Atlantic Ocean via the South Carolina shoreline. I've stepped into it from North Carolina, but South Carolina was a little different. After getting stuck in a thunderstorm last night and watching GET SMART (good movie by the way), my roommate and our neighbor (a fellow REU-er) took off to Folly Beach, SC at 8am this morning for a day of fun. Along the way, we saw these girls in Columbia that looked dressed for the beach and an hour later we ran into them at a rest stop too which was kind of funny. Around 10:30, we made it to Folly Beach and look in awe at the amazing Atlantic and the ... read more
