Well another Shadwell has graduated from the University of South Carolina. Congratulations, Rebecca! So to celebrate her academic achievement we headed to Charleston to participate in the very adult venue of Spoleto. What could be more grown up and educated then going to the opera? I am reminded of the book Little Women when Joe and her oldest sister get to go the opera and Amy is not allowed because she is to young. Going to Spoleto was not a purely selfish gift in that its on my, "To do before I die ", list. Rebecca likes Opera. Proof that college does broaden your horizons and make you a well-rounded person. My newly educated sister can make comments like," the lead soprano was very good or this opera was all recitative, (dialogue which is "sing-speak." ... read more

First up apologies for the Facebook users as you may recognise some photos that have already been posted......but hey what can you do! First up youll be pleased to know that i heard NPR (national public radio - a simply fabulous radio programme broadcast nationally ala triple J but whose emphasis rather than on music is on real news and current affairs both locally and globally - check it out at http://www.npr.org/ - simply tremendous coverage)......anyway the lead local story was that some of the local councillors in all their wisdom are trying to pass legislation aimed at deeming illegal the wearing of pants below the waist while exposing underwear as seems to be the fashion among certain people in the area. And not content with such measures it is propsed that extremely baggy pants be ... read more

After checking out of our Kiawah Island condo, Alan and I spend an afternoon touring Charleston, SC before driving to Atlanta. With only a few hours to spare, it’s hard to choose between museums, home tours and carriage rides through the historic district. We need help. Alan eases the rental car into the only short-term parking space at the Visitor’s Center. He waits while I run inside to pick up brochures and advice. The place is packed with out-of-town visitors lining up to make reservations for area attractions. I return to the car with maps and a battle plan. After driving down Meeting Street, we park the car in a public parking garage at the corner of Queen and King Streets. Then, we make the only sensible choice. EAT. But, I really mean dine on low ... read more

Just in case you were closing out some international agreements or ratifying treaties soon i thought i should quickly let you know that one of the pretty important courts here in the US made a ruling and as i understand it made out that unless a treaty or protocol made specific reference that the states here in the US had to abide by it then it wasnt binding to the states. So for example if the US federal govt ie the president, were to join Ruddy and finally ratify the Kyoto Protocol to reduce CO2 emmissions if the protocol did not specifically state that the protocol was binding to the states, the states could simply ignore it! My inside soruces tell me this decision is now under appeal so ill let you know how that pans ... read more

Well well well! With oil not only sneaking past the magical $US100 a barrel price but seemingly catching a ride in a speedy fuel guzzling SUV and not looking to jump off anytime soon it is nice that deep in the American south (where i live!) there is a glimpse of the future. Parking for alternative fuel vehicles. I must say though the hybrid car is becoming an increasingly more popular concept here which is very promising. Perhaps because fuel is now almost $A1 per litre (not really that expensive is it!) or maybe that certain american car companies are creating hybrid SUV's!!! An oxymoron if ever i heard one but hey any progress is good progress......right?!?! More photos to drag you away and distract you from your work commitments include: The dog - Dogan - ... read more

Hello friends! It's Josh again. It's 10 p.m. here in Summerville, and my chain of flights towards Sydney begins in only 8 hours. I'll be heading to sleep after this entry, and waking up at 4 a.m. to take a shower and say goodbye to my cats. I've just spent an incredible week with my girlfriend Erin whom I love very much! After a somewhat emotional morning, we said our "see you soon"s and "I love you"s and I drove home to Summerville to finish packing. Here's what I've got packed! Suitcase 1 is crammed full of 7 pairs of shorts, 3 pairs of long pants, 16 shirts, lots of boxers, and socks, not to mention my brand new USC pajamas. A pair of dress shoes, running shoes, and flip flops are in the bottom section. ... read more

Welcome all to my amazingly awesome travel blog. I'm going to divide this first entry into two sections. Section One is for people who randomly found this blog, or people I've invited that don't actually know who I am (it happens more than you'd think). Section Two is for people who already know me and want to skip the introductions and howdy-do's and get down to the meat and potatoes of Josh's craaaazy plans. Section One! (Skip this if you already know who I am, or read it anyway. I don't even care!) Hello! My name is Josh Sutherland and I'm 21 years old. I currently reside in Summerville, South Carolina which isn't quite in Charleston but it's close enough for this blog's purposes. I've lived here my entire life. For the last three and a ... read more

Neal, Tara, Taylor, and I headed down to Chucktown for a good time. We froze and had a great time...and here are the pics to prove it! We went to the Old Exchange, Angel Oak, the Charleston Tea Plantation, and took the Dark Side of Charleston tour. We also played Apples to Apples (soooo fun!) and Cranium. What a blast!... read more
