Neal and I tied the knot on July 18, 2007, a mere 10 months after we starting dating. We were originally going to do a big shebang and all around February of next year (and accordingly, we booked a honeymoon for then). But we decided to be spontaneous and go to the courthouse. So afterward, we packed up and headed down to Charleston, SC, one of our favorite places on earth! We went two times within a few weeks, so I'll just talk about both times now. We stayed at the Meeting House Hotelboth times, which I found out was one of the haunted ones. The rooms were so beautiful and the lobby was breathtaking. I am used to staying budget, so this place was like a palace! I love Charleston because it is full of ... read more

Things to ponder and think about. I did a days work at a place called Dataw Island Marina (punch that into Google and see what I mean!......hmmmmm…..google another global monopoly that may justify its own installment……anyway back to Dataw Island) yesterday and the place quite frankly is bullshit. It’s a gated community where you need white or grey hair, own a golf buggy have a house that has a minimum of 33 bedrooms, have a selection of boats, like golf, be dripping with money and well....... be white! Its surprising too as just like Glen Alpine, Mount Annan or any other typical western suburb new development urban sprawl in Sydney while the houses seemed nice enough they kind of all looked the same, as if the owners had purchased a mansion off the shelf. What was ... read more

Speak Australian! My gosh it gets you a long way here in southern America! Was onsite in very very country american town (Lenoir in North Carolina) and you name it, the drillers, the on-site client contact, the guy at the hotel, the lady serving me at the restraunt.......a simple 'Gday' greeting was all it took for a huge smile to light up all of their faces and a fascination as to where the hell i i had come from where such strange sounds were considered speaking English! Speaking of the strange and the silly here are some of the day to day differences i see here in the grand old US of A that when i see them i think man i got to tell people at home about this: In south carolina at least you ... read more

As always we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Charleston, South Carolina. It has become our hometown filled with friends, fun, and tons of great cultural and culinary delights (gotta love that southern cooking). Besides enjoying all this city has to offer we have also been busy preparing for the next adventure. Our plan is to sail to the Caribbean for the next 2-3 years; thru the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, the Windward and Leeward Islands, and the Grenadines. We are super excited and of course a little nervous too. In preparation for this big adventure we have made some substantial changes to the Rum Runner. First off, we have upgraded to the new Beneteau 49 which allowed us to increase our capacity and comfort for the years ahead. We have added extra fuel tanks and ... read more

Got woken up by Hannah early in the morning, whispering from outside my tent. I eventually got up, very tired and went to meet her near reception to go for a walk on the beach. I went to the bathroom and saw that Amy was coming as well. We headed down to the beach and noticed it was very cloudy, we were pretty disappointed because it was a lovely night last night. We didn’t make it as far as the pier and turned back because we couldn’t really see much. Arriving back at the campsite everyone else was beginning to get up so people started packing their tents. Dave and I made a hot breakfast for everyone then started getting yelled at by Jon because we hadn’t packed our tent yet, even though we just made ... read more

After getting ready it was up to Charleston for Turtle Folk to play at the Pour House. This one was much easier as we didn't have PA setup. The crowd wasn't a big as they were an out of town band but it was amazing to see how well they engaged the crowd. The band after was skilled but it was more like just them doing what they do on stage and not really interacting with the crowd. After words I got to play driver as I was the only one sober. It was a fun ride Turtle Folk are a great bunch of guys and made the situation pretty entertaining. My roadie vacation has been allot of fun and more then I could have ever expected. Thanks Turtle Folk you guys were awesome.... read more

We drove from Fayetteville to Charleston this afternoon, and we are in probably the prettiest Holiday Inn I've ever seen. Jerry and I always get a suite because I'm not sure we could live without a mini-fridge. The room is huge, the bed is so comfortable, and the staff is so nice! We had the absolute most wonderful time. First up was exploring Ft. Moultrie. You have to understand something. My husband, the historian, had never been here. And still knew everything about the old fort. Another Civil War site down! Tonight we went to the aquarium to watch the fireworks. We had plenty of time, saved our spot on the steps overlooking the water (eventually had to battle a group of 10 people for our spot, seriously, lady, if you're "saving" the spot maybe ... read more

Friday, June 8, 2007 - Atlanta, Georgia/North Charleston, South Carolina We left Atlanta, Georgia, a tad earlier than what originally had planned, but unfortunately the blight journey delivered us right into the middle of notorious ritual of Atlanta’s Friday afternoon traffic jam. It was another opportunity to put our patience to the test among Atlanta’s worst drivers. Or it might be because summer travel had already begun all across the continent. Fortunately I was occupied by simple tasks of observing U.S. flags and South Carolina facts. South Carolina has secured its prestigious position as one of thirteen stripes on U.S. flags, which signify the original thirteen states to join the Union. One of the hardest questions to answer was whether South Carolina is a ‘red’ or a ‘white’ stripe (hint: it was the eighth state to ... read more
