It took exactly one hour to drive the 21+ miles (around 34 km) from Kiawah Island to the point in Charleston where King Street ends at the edge of the water passing through the business district. This historical section of the city in the proximity of White Point Park is still a fair representation of what the town used to look when it was named Charles Town and the U.S.A. was still a British colony during the second half of the 18th Century. There is an evident pride by the owners of the properties in the area to preserve each house as it was originally built. At the edge of the water beyond Murray Boulevard and East Battery Street, there is an elevated walkway that allows nice views of both the harbor and the period houses ... read more

Posted by: Onaxthiel: I know that there are only a handful of readers that will get this, but that makes today a day of divine intervention. It did turn out pretty well, so it's possible. Today we went out to Patriots Point, home of several WWII warships, most notably the USS Yorktown, “the Fighting Lady” made famous in a 1944 propaganda film of the same name. The various decks of Yorktown house dozens of exhibits beside the ones specifically dedicated to the ship herself, so I would recommend arriving as soon as the gates open at 9:00 in the morning. We were there for eight and a half hours, and we gave only fairly cursory examinations to the other ships on display. Where to even begin with Yorktown? The flight deck and island (the command tower ... read more

Event 1 - Silverchair, playing a concert in my new neck of the woods....unheard of! Yet at the house of blues in Myrtle Beach, a lazy two hour drive north of the burgee-matthews manor the all grown up Silverchair and Paul Mac play to a ridiculously excited crowd. And the best bit about the show.......the cost.....$15.50 for the ticket. Not the $100+ it seems to cost these days for a stadium shows...you see back in my day you could see a red hot band for under $20......well i guess it still is my day! And despite being 1000's and 1000's of kms from home i bump into 4 random Aussies who have driven 5 hrs from the college they are attending in the middle of country Amercia who recognise the Australian Football (insert soccer for you ... read more

After a much needed good night's sleep, I was up at around 9, hoping to get out and about early. However, this was before I remembered I had to do some laundry, which delayed me by a couple of hours. Still made it into town for midday though, with the hope of catching a bus tour round town at that time. However, on arrival at the visitor's centre I was told that due to a Christmas parade, there would be no city tours today. This was annoying, but not the end of the world, so I went for a walk instead, down to the very tip of the peninsula at Battery Park. Like Savannah, Charleston has its fair share of colonial buildings, and certain areas look like they probably haven't changed at all for 200 years. ... read more

Woke at about 7, after a shocking night's sleep because; a) the bed is a good 3 inches too short for me; and b) the girl in my dorm with me had to be up at 4 to get her bus. Was invited to eat some horrible oatmeal by Jane, a sextagenarian staying at the hostel who then tried to hijack my whole day by telling me what I should be doing with my time. However, her nefarious plans were in vain, because I had stupidly agreed the night before to help my new found friends go round the neighbourhood picking up litter as part of their efforts to improve the local environment. In honesty, I only agreed to help because I was promised a free breakfast (which was much nicer than Jane's oatmeal) but then ... read more

Left Savannah this morning and jumped on the Greyhound for a 2 hour journey to its sister city, Charleston. On arrival, jumped in a taxi to my hostel, which I was disappointed to find out seemed to be further out of town than I'd first thought. I couldn't check in until 5, so I wandered round to get some lunch, eventually finding a French restaurant where I had a croque monsieur and pomme frites. Which was delicious apart from the croque monsieur swimming in melted cheese and the frites being so salty, my mouth dried up just looking at them. By the time I got back to the hostel it was 4pm and I was sat in the living room reading when a girl walked in and asked me if I wanted to write on cups. ... read more

Nous ... read more
