Our sojourn through South Carolina took us to Charleston, another beautiful and historic southern city. With a protected harbor, the city has been a trading port since pre-Revolutionary times. The Civil War began here, when Union troops fired the first shots from Fort Sumpter. Considering wars, fires, earthquakes and hurricanes, it is fortunate that so many historic buildings remain. Many have been beautifully restored and are now museums, tour destinations, bed and breakfasts, as well as single-family homes. Tourism is an important business here and restaurants abound. Diane ate her first plate of shrimp and grits—which she proclaimed delicious. One afternoon, we drove to Magnolia Gardens, a plantation owned by the Drayton family for hundreds of years, briefly occupied by the British during the Revolutionary War. The gardens were abloom with azaleas and camellias. We tour ... read more

Hello form Charleston, South Carolina! Well I left DC yesterday morning at 0955 on the Palmetto train heading South. There was loads of leg room and it was quite comfortable like the last train but it was very slow. Didnt help that I was sitting next to a big ole woman who kept coughing on me! Anyway, was supposed to arrive in Charleston at 1830 but the train was delayed by over 2hours! Didnt get in till gone 9pm so the journey ended up taking 11hours! Anyway I was booked into a place called Motel 6 which was out on the Savannah Highway but didnt know how far that was from the train station. Got off the train and went looking for a taxi, there was a couple of taxis waiting outside, one of the ... read more

Well we thought it was time for another update as Fi and I have done a bit more travelling and had some unique ‘American’ experiences. At the end of January Fi and I jumped in the car and drove up to Charleston (South Carolina) which is about 400 km away. It was a pretty nice drive and we actually passed through three States; Florida, Georgia and then into South Carolina. Gotta love it over here though - speed limit says 70 mph, average speed of drivers is 80 mph and those in a hurry between 85 - 95 mph. Cops won’t even look at you if you are within 10 mph of the speed limit. Even if the cops pull you over you just show them your Australian license which is usually followed by' I'm gonna ... read more

I leave tomorrow for a quick visit with friends in Brooklyn NY - then take off for a 10 hr. layover in London (hopefully we make it out of the airport - at least to a pub, if not to Buckingham Palace). After that it's straight to Bombay.... read more

We had 4 days to take in Charleston, South Carolina and will provide you with the highlights here. For the most part we were lucky with the weather as it was even possible to wear shorts a couple of the days. We stayed in the Charles Inn (Best Western) in the historic district. This was a fine location for taking off on walks—something we did frequently. In fact, that is probably the best part about visiting Charleston, just taking the time to walk through the historic district and take in the houses. We decided not to pay the $$ for the historic tours around town or to Fort Sumpter (John had been here before) but there are ample opportunities for that if you like. There are many dinner places but if you happen to want to ... read more

G'Day All Today I talk to you from a wet and wintery Charleston, but first to our trip up the east coast from Cocoa Beach. Our first stop after leaving Cocoa Beach was Savannah, made famous of course by the TV show of the same name (I know you watched it Jess), Forrest Gump, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and some sort of civil war which happened in these parts a while ago. Savannah is, in Emma's words: "More beautiful than I could ever imagine" and all she talked about on the way up was how beautiful this place was, so that gives you an indication of how nice it is. There are cobblestone streets and 21 parks with monuments throughout the town centre. Savannah boasts to be rich in American history and ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 28 8th - 18th November 2006 ‘Nothin’ could be finer than to be in Carolina…..’ It took four days for the new toilet cables to arrive by carrier - and one and a half hours to fit them. The break from travelling allowed us to relax for a while and catch up with planning for the next month or two. Then, with all systems go, we set off south from New Bern in pouring rain, down along the coast through the Carolina flatlands reminiscent of Holland, following the chain of beautiful islands, long sandy beaches and open marshlands. There were no fireworks for us on November 5th, but we celebrated anyway. It was our 300th day on the road. “Only 20% of America is worth seeing,” a good friend told us ... read more

Monday November 20th 2006 The third storm hit us as predicted on Wednesday night and all was mostly over within a 48 hours. We did get up to gale force winds for a good part of the day, and we where all happy to be safely in port being nicely tucked in at the Tide Water Marina in Portsmouth VA. Sadly we are not in the West Indies as planned!, guess what!! We have arrived in Charleston South Carolina at the city municipal marina!! Why well! on this past Friday everyone was up bright and early stowing final lines and tying down for our crossing. To our surprise the phone rings and it’s our weather forecasters Nycole & Jean Yves partners of the Reseau du Capitaine who very skillfully give us our daily offshore marine forecasts. ... read more
