Off to a rough start, apparently US Airways pilots are afraid to fly in the rain! I'm missing my group flight out of the US so looks like I'm flying solo all the way to Bhutan... As long as I (and my pack) get there!... read more

We arrived on Monday and spent Tues. and Wed. with Jason, Sara and Maggie. What fun. Maggie is a fun filled girl even though her pictures don't always look smiley. Her vocabulary is amazing and many times comes up with "What are we going to do about that." When she makes a mess eating, she says "That happens sometimes." Guess she spends alot of time with adults. ... read more

New Orleans was the decided destination which was around 3 days drive away. We set off driving with our destination another KOA campsite, Statesville East. Bowks was now chief navigator and I the driver as I was the only one old enough to drive the car! Bowks’s directions were brilliant and we arrived at the KOA campsite at 4.30pm. Wow! What an entrance! There was a sign pointing into the campsite saying ‘Wicked Woods’, when we went into the office to make our reservation we were welcomed by a whole host of face painted Halloween style hill billys who looked at me and Bowks like we’d just landed from Mars, as we did at them. Turned out the Wicked Woods was an annual event they hold each year that lasts about 2 weeks consisting of ... read more

Happy 4th of July! July 2 we drove to Carowinds and stopped along the way from Myrtle Beach at Sparkey's and bought a pet hermit crab. We checked into our cabin here at Camp Wilderness and ordered pizza while the kiddo swam in the pool. We caught fireflies for the first time and then in the morning we did a private tour of S. Carolina's Old English Country and Historic Brattonsville (a colonial settlement) where Patriot was filmed with Mel Gibson. It was fabulous and the history was gripping and a woman whose ancestors were the real slaves there on the actual plantation, gave us a period tour as well. They have heriloom chickens and goats and pigs there that are actually endangered and are no longer farmed. It is an actual working plantation still after ... read more

I have accepted a job as a business instructor at Al Ain Women's College in the United Arab Emirates. After years of accumulating things with the idea that we might one day have enough, my wife and I have decided to spend the next few years exploring the world and perhaps even bridging some cultural gaps. God willing, we may make a difference. On June 13th our youngest son graduates from high school. We have sold our house and are in the process of getting rid of all of our stuff that we cannot take with us in a couple of suitcases. Our first stop will be Madrid Spain.... read more

Today was a lot of fun but not very story-filled. I went to Lowe’s Motor Speedway, just outside Charlotte, to take a tour of the speedway. Back in my redneck days, I was quite an avid NASCAR fan so this was a nice trip down memory lane. When I arrived, aural testosterone permeated the air as drivers from the Richard Petty Driving School were on the track. If that sound doesn’t charge you up, nothing will. I took a $5 tour of the track, where we stopped on pit row, took a van ride in the infield, drove the van around the track (only at about 85 mph, though) and saw the nearby drag strip and dirt track. Remembering back almost 20 years ago when the sport was in its adolescence, it was amazing to see ... read more

I made it out unscathed. I was shocked to wake up in that God forsaken hotel and not have any problems. The car and I were both fine. The trip there was short as the only reasons to go there were the military museums, Fort Bragg and to visit my cousin, who was recently assigned there (and is currently on leave for a week in Mexico). That left me with the just the Airborne & Special Ops Museum and the JFK Special Warfare Museum on Fort Bragg. The Airborne Museum is similar in size to the USMC Museum I visited in Quantico. Given that its focus is Airborne and SpecOps, its timeline is obviously very recent. The bulk of the museum covers WWII, especially much of the pursuits of the 101D as seen in Band of ... read more

I have decided to post one more time before I get back to the road in 10 days time. This is just another chapter in my adventure across America. I am back in Virginia with the family. The funeral over and North Carolina behind me, the thought of miles adding up had me wondering...how many miles have I traveled in the past year. From Utah to Houston to Costa Rica, Panama City to Granada Nicaragua. Costa Rica back to Utah all traveled along side Tim. A plane flight to Virginia, up to DC for the Inauguration where I stayed with Rory and visited Justin and Mike. From there I took off to Troy New York via bus to visit Steph and Laura, not to forget Jenn and Josh. A bus ride back down through Albany, NYC, ... read more
