So my day in Charlotte was much better than the day I had yesterday - no petty crime or crazy people whatsoever. Took a trip to Discovery Place, a kind of cooler version of the Science Museum. At the moment, they have an exhibition called BodyWorlds - I'm not sure if this is the same as Bodies that was in London a while back, but it basically consists of dead human bodies plasticised so you can see organs and muscles etc. A bit gruesome, but actually really fascinating, especially the section on the development of embryos in the womb. About a third of the way through the exhibit, a guy sidled up to me and asked if I liked science. I don't think this was a particularly geeky chat up line, as he worked at the ... read more

A day mostly spent travelling, though not without incident. For starters, I had to walk about a mile to the visitors centre, with all my stuff, to get the bus back to the Greyhound station. However, when I got there, the only bus stop didn't have my bus number on it. So I had to wander round for 20 minutes, before I found the right stop, a block away from where it should have been. Luckily I just made my bus otherwise I would have had to stay in Charleston an extra night. Whilst waiting at the Greyhound station, I opted not to sit next to the weird looking guy who was talking to himself quite loudly, and sat 2 benches away. At which point, an older, just as weird looking guy walked past saying to ... read more

All business. Thats what this trip was. No wait there was a lot of hanging out and just having a great time. But I think what I am trying to say is there was no sight seeing or relaxation. Honestly I searched travel sites and travel blogs and I couldn't really find anything to do in Charlotte. Although, looking back at how busy we were, we wouldn't have had time to sight see or relax, and after what did happen why would we have wanted to. I could have also titled this "Red Scare's Longest Journey Ever", because that is exactly what it was. This was the Red Scare of the University of Dayton traveling all the way from southwest Ohio to Charlotte. Which sounds like a ridiculous idea if the trip is only going to ... read more

The confrence is over and I am off to Asheville. We were requested to help with a workshop that didn't really need us. The panel was good though and I feel they really got soemthing out of it. Thats ok getting paid to update my travelbog is a nice perk to the head egg of the last couple days. I'm excited though I get to see my friend Maggie, and roam a little more without having to manage adults who don't want to take responsablity for themselves. I'm being picked up this afternoon can't wait for the drive. Steve Fadden- Thankyou for everything you were able to offer during this trip. Despite the difficulties and frustations the workshop you ran and got running were worth all the effort. Landmarkites- Week and a half and the fun ... read more

The confence has been uneventful unfortunately. Other then Faddens stuff it is limited to nifty. It has given me perspective on my role at Landmark especially with pulling away from New England for a bit. We did visit the UNC library and they had an amazing veiw from the 10th floor which was rare books. I will drop those online once I can get them off my card. Tommorrow Professor is coming in to lecture on Assistive Technology and he's from Colorado so it should be more engaging. ... read more

When I got the the bus station it was time to hit the street. Using public transit was an enlightening experience. I learn bus don't make chang and change for a 5 is 3 dollars. In the moment a 3.30 ride was worth getting to the hotel safely. I also learn the importance of watching your backpack on the bus. It like to hit the stop here button. Once I got to UNC charlotte I had the oppertunity to unvolenterally explore the campus in search of information for the Holiday Inn. I dont have access to the upload picture for know but it really nice and really big. By the time I got to the hotel I was so thankful for shelter form the heat I wouldnt have mattered if it was the right hotel. Confrence ... read more

I got to the bus station about 8:30pm after seeing see a cop escort a guy out of the train station I felt it better to grab my ticket and head back up the street were I seem like the sketch guy. Once the bus finally came around it was 5 hours of cyro-stasis broken up by mystery parking lots and bus station breaks. It wasn't too bad as the trip was over night. Watch the world sleep something different under each street light. You think different at night about were you are and were you have been its something I've needed for a while. It was kind of fun to take the night ride over. Definitely out of my comfort zone but thats why I'm here to learn about something different. When I got ... read more

Got into Charlotte about 7:00pm and the search begins. After a bunch of phone calls and question of people in the area I find bus number 5 and confirmed somewhere to rest my head in the morning. So many bus and no idea were they go. I wonder what would happen if I just sat on one for the fun of it, but then realized I rather not get mugged by the cub scouts after dark. On to a bus I found a bunch of little maps that should help when I come back around next week. The bus driver was kamikaze trained and intent on a mission to get where he was going. We run 3 stoplights and break hard at the fourth. The bus driver forgets to drop me off just before the end ... read more

While Grayson visited with Paw-paw Kilon and I packed our remaining clothes and necessities into suitcases. The items that didn’t fit into suitcases were disposed of or donated. We were able to get it down to 4 suitcases (1 for me, 1 for Kilon, 1 small suitcase for Grayson, 1 for toys). We will live out of suitcases until our container is delivered…probably some time in September. The house closed on July 31st. There was a little drama the night before and the day of the closing, but it was minor and we survived! Tom Burnett was nice enough to book us a suite the last night (July 30th). We were in the house working late and basically had no belongings. THANKS TOM!!!! We enjoyed the nice fluffy bed and hot coffee! After the closing on ... read more

We had to decide what we would do with “our stuff”. This was not an easy decision. Most of the feedback we had received from people living in Costa Rica was to sell everything and buy new in Costa Rica. After much consideration we decided it would be best to have familiar objects around us. It will be hard enough to adjust to a different culture/life and maybe “our stuff” would make the transition a bit easier (this was to amuse Grayson and myself). Kilon did all the research and organization to make the move happen. I did contribute to the process by occasionally complaining…okay it was more than occasionally! We sorted through “our stuff”. We packed what we wanted and put what we did not want into the garage. We had a crew come in ... read more
