It's a bit of a retrospective post, this one, but he's been bugging me non-stop about when his visit is going to appear on my blog =0P. If you MUST know, I was waiting for photos to be developed. Now that I've joined the digital revolution, my mega camera now only comes out on very special occasions. I've finally had the remaining film developed though and now, by means of this glorious little anecdote (which I'm sure you all appreciated) I can say here you go hun, this one's for you. So far anyone that doesn't know already and hasn't had to listen to me whine on about my lovely boyfriend being on the other bloody side of the world, my lovely boyfriend Simon is currently on the other bloody side of the world. While I'm ... read more

Many would have heard of alternate names for New York City, such as the Big Apple and...well I am sure there is another one. I hereby add another name to that list, Bling City. The reason being is that it is a city full of bling and gangsters, and not much else. Even the buildings are blingy with all of their glass and stainless steel, fancy billboard adverts like in Times Square and whatnot. And of course, the people here like to wear lots of blingy clothes and jewellery. Not much is bigger than New York, save for the Statue of Liberty and the mouths of a lot of New Yorkers. It can be quite intimidating to the unseasoned traveller coming from small-time London, wondering why all these silly Americans drive on the wrong side of ... read more

multitasking margi is how i would describe myself. i really don't have time to be doing this but it is more fun than packing - ironing, washing clothes, etc. any last minute advice from my fellow bloggers. my travel agent friend suggested a jar of peanut butter and stopper from sink. other practical suggestions are duct tape, clothesline, melatonin, etc if you world travelers have some suggestions, please chime in. just 3 days to go!!! i won't embarass the person who made the most practical suggestion of all - practice squatting over the toilet. really!! this person has been to china and had the experience in public bathrooms. a hole in the floor is what is called a toilet in some places. this person also added that it is possible and aim gets better with practice. ... read more

picture the ball dropping in Times Square and count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 with me. count down to china has begun. altitude apoplexy -has passed as we now have the right meds for lessening effects of altitude sickness. turned out we have problems with standard med so will take steroids. look out. cdc travel bulletin on high alt. travel got our attention. meds are to control A.S. and to prevent death. we are busing up to high altitude so bodies won't adjust slowly. remember these are the Himalayas. therefore, our bodies have to work harder to uptake lesser amt of oxygen. stay tuned for how we do. needle news several shots - we have have had several shots (not Scotch) - typhoid, polio booster, hepatits A & B, check for measles immunity. script for malaria. ... read more

I just got back from New York, NY, visiting my best friend Jake and his girlfriend Liz. They live in the lower west side of Manhattan, right near NYU and Soho...Their apartment is 2x as big as my Jeep Cherokee and, needless to say, we were a bit cramp. But being so close to each other brought some great times. Jake works for a music television station called Fuse and is somewhat handy with a video camera. After compiling all his footage from our graduation roadtrip a couple summers ago, he made this amazing "movie" (and its a real movie!) of all of us throughout those amazing 16 days. It turned out so great. Copies will be made available at the producers discretion. This was my 3rd time to NYC so we definitely didn't do the ... read more

first entry as a blogger - sure to be rough with hopes of smoothing it out as i learn. for instance, haven't found spell check. 44 pounds only allowed to be checked - one bag. boy do we get spoiled traveling in the U.S. picture me stark naked (referred hereafter as S.N.), on second thought, don't, on the scale weighing myself and my books for the trip = 6 pounds and i have more. 44-6= 38 pounds. picture me again S.N and holding my 25 inch piece of luggage containing clothes and pharmaceuticals = 32 pounds. 38 pounds-32 = 6 pounds left. also have to factor in getting out of China and added weight of souvenirs. flying China Eastern over and back from L.A. so rules are strict. carry on even gets weighed 12 pounds. yipes, ... read more

My volunteer experience so far has been very good. I’ve been getting a feel for the schedule, learning where things are, and what most of my responsibilities are going to be for the year. The brothers I’m working with are easy going and I’ve felt very comfortable in the community from day one. We had a very busy September with a lot of high school retreat groups both during the week and over the weekends. I was even a member of the retreat team for the Marist (Bayonne) freshmen and ended up giving a talk. I haven’t been able to get down to the city yet, but I was able to go to Washington DC for a weekend with a friend from college to visit some of our other friends there. Overall I can’t complain much. ... read more

Spent a large chunk of the day copying music from my 2 computers onto my mp3 player... and I finally just got my bag packed and weighed. All my stuff only weighs 26 lbs... and I'm pretty happy with that number. My flight leaves at 6pm, but I still don't feel like i'm actually going anywhere... not sure when it will actually hit me? Today I got a little nervous about the trip for the first time really... Next time I write i'll be on the other side of the world... till then. ... read more
