Day 10 - the High Line Today was our first day with Francesca. This was her first time in America ever. We woke up and had breakfast. I had a bowl of strawberries. After everyone had breakfast and got dressed, we walked to the train station and caught a train to 14 avenue and then walked to the High Line. The High Line is a old train railway that was raised in the air. There are plants growing all around the rails and a path down the middle. After we walked through the whole railway. We were at the Hudson Yards. In the middle of the Hudson Yards there was a sculpture that were stairs that went up circling into the sky. We all went up to the top apart from Mike who is scared of ... read more

Day 9 - Brooklyn Bridge Today everyone woke up at 8:30, but I woke up at 9:45 which I personally thought was early compared to my 11 o’clock start yesterday. We got ready and left our apartment at 12 noon. We stopped at the outside the Police station where they filmed Brooklyn 99. We then did a long walk to DUMBO market which was nice I guess. After that we walked to a food market called Time Out which was delicious, me and Zoe got fried chicken karage. Mum reminded us there was dessert place which she had heard of before. Dō. It was actually delicious. (Thanks Mina) After that we walked to Brooklyn bridge which wasn’t very interesting. We walked to the Subway and I finally swiped my metro card on one go! We got ... read more

Day 8 Brooklyn Today was our first full day in Brooklyn and our first full day with Caroline and Mike. Another sluggish start (this jet lag seems to be dragging on a fraction). Mike and I went on a coffee and pastry reconnaissance, which was partially successful, although a couple of the pana chocalate turned out to be plain croissants. Around noon we left our Union St abode and headed towards the Williamsburg bridge on east River. We walked along many of the cool streets of Brooklyn. I found a brilliant latte and Bella found a book shop that carried new editions of two of her favourite book series. We ended up at a new development on the riverside called Domino’s Park. They are redeveloping the old warehouses into new residential areas (Docklands style), with great ... read more

We're prepping! But not like crazy prepping end of days in a bunker kinda noise just the how can I get all the t-shirts I'm gonna wanna wear over the next 2.5 months into a pack and keep it under 12kg. But also not really. But REALLY. We're vacc'ed, visa-ed and verifiably ready to get some quality time off the continental US. Vaccine protip: if you're all, damn it I need to get shots for this trip! and you live in NYC and you waited until the absolute last minute (or even if you didn't) we totes recommend travelclinicny.com easy to get an appointment, best prices and no waits for any of the vaccines. Sadly, this is the first time our trusty packs aren't making the trip with us; they were just too big to reliably ... read more

Day 5 When dad woke us up, we were exhausted because it was 8:00 and the past few days we had been waking up at like 11. The Uber driver got there an hour before needed, because today we were leaving San Francisco and heading to the big city, NEW YORK! We got our stuff together and Headed to airport, we got into the frites lounge somehow for 3hrs and just sat on the couch watching Netflix or scrolling through Instagram, until I accidentally swung my hand to get my water and then I knocked it and it spilt water on dads bag which unfortunately had our passports and money in it. Oops. We got on our 5 and a half hour flight! Geez. So our flight left at 1:00 San Fran time and it landed ... read more

Our cruise aboard Caribbean Princess to the Canadian Maritimes and Greenland was to sail from Brooklyn. This would be a first, sailing from Brooklyn rather than Manhattan. To reach Brooklyn, we drove up I-95 to northern New Jersey, then took I-278 across Staten Island and the Verrazzano Narrows bridge to Brooklyn. It was a raimy and gloomy trip, taking about eight hours. We stayed Sunday night at the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge. Dinner was found next door to the hotel, at Rocco's Tacos & Tequillar Bar, a popular neighborhood spot. Monday morning I took a walk around the block outside our hotel. The rain was gone and the sun now out! This was a very central location in Brooklyn. Passerby and transit busses reminded me of the scene looking out of our Loondon hotel two years before. ... read more

It was October 2017, my 5th visit to the United States of America and my second visit to New York City. My first visit to the city and the country was in May 2006. "The city that never sleeps" is the largest city of the USA with roughly 20 million inhabitants. Also known as the "Big Apple", it is a very lively city with something for everyone! This visit was part of a type of "apprenticeship" for a small travel agency in Curaçao in order to be able to travel as a travel-coordinator with their groups. Of course I am not the kind of person who would book such tours, but for others it is an easy and comfortable way to travel. This tour was one week and is a pretty active one because you'll move ... read more

So this will be our last post for this trip. It has been an awesome trip and feels like we have been gone forever......this is day 25 away from home!! We are at JFK awaiting our flight to PIT at 9:30 We land there at 11:00 and then head for WV. No matter hw much I love to travel, my favorite part is coming home. While it may sound trite "There's no place like home!!" This post will be a wrap up of the trip.....the things we loved, hated, laughed at, & found challenging. So, as Shealyn says, lets start at the very beginning....a very fine pace to start(obviously we watched The Sound of Music on the flight home). First of all we liked that we exchanged some money before we arrived. It helped us with ... read more

It was a bright sun New Year's Eve afternoon a little more than 32 years ago when we began our greatest journey. We found ourselves nervously sitting amongst one of the most unique collections of people we had ever experienced. The mixture of languages, skin colors and the obvious financial differentials of this diverse cast of characters meant it could only be one city in the world. Nowhere else on earth could have offered this mixture of cultures, shapes and varieties of the human experience. It had to be in New York City. We and about 100 other couples were here in the Manhattan marriage license bureau for the second day in a row. The previous day we had stood in line and paid our ten dollars to receive our license. Today would be the day ... read more

High on Life, high on love, high on The Highline walk and High in rooftop bars Twenty-five years ago (March 26, 1994) we were married barefoot on a glistening white sandy beach in Barbados listening to the intoxicating roar of the ocean waves surrounded by good friends and family. Banks beer and rum drinks flowed and island music played. At that time we vowed to attempt to celebrate our bigger wedding anniversaries on an island. On our 5thanniversary we went back to Barbados to celebrate, our 10thwe spent it in Fiji on Matamanoa Island, our 15thwas on Sanibel Island, Florida, we were off to explore Ireland for our 20thanniversary. We decided our 25thanniversary should be spent on one of the more famous islands in America so here we are in Manhattan. No regrets is our motto. ... read more
