Over the past 15 years or so I’ve been to NYC on a good number of occasions but mostly for day trips and rarely for a weekend. My family and I have enjoyed many Broadway plays, Radio City Music Hall, the ballet, a museum or two, and some fun restaurants. One event I’ve been wishing to attend has always been just out of reach for one reason or another. That event is the “New York Times Travel Show,” and this year my wish was fulfilled! Now a fixture on New York City’s winter events calendar, each January brings the much-anticipated travel show to those of us seeking travel destinations inspiration. Staged in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, this marked the 16th year that this 2-day event has been held. Last year's show topped 30,000 in ... read more

New York 2. – 9. November 2018 2. Die bestellte Limousine bringt uns in unser Quartier, „Oakwood at the Nash“, ein wunderbares Apartmenthaus in Midtown, Murray Hill, 222 East 39th Street. Ich gehe noch rasch fürs Frühstück einkaufen – die Geschäfte ums Eck haben zwar 24 Stunden offen, aber das Angebot ist mehr als Bescheiden hier im Zentrum Manhattans. Wir wandern noch Richtung Times Square durch das abendliche Manhattan, ... read more

When Sarah and I got engaged in June 2017 we had no real idea of when we would get hitched and certainly no idea where. In June this year we ended several years of living between my flat and Sarah's house and moved into our own house and garden, and had a long hot summer getting things set up. With the major work done it was then time to do the deed and we had decided on New York. I'd casually suggested it as we wanted a quiet affair abroad and I'd suggested New York, Sarah had dismissed the idea but on further thought and research decided that it was the place. I'd been pre blog in 2003 and it was on Sarah's bucket list. We flew Edinburgh to Heathrow then Virgin over to JFK loving ... read more

Let the self indulgence begin! I’m on VACATION!! Oh, and so is Susan. We are in the lounge where she is swilling free tomato juice like it was, er, free while I type this while sitting in a – wait for it – comfy chair! Such decadence. And when I finish this, oatmeal! Yee and haw. We splurged and upgraded to business class – at least for the leg to Montreal. Upgrading on the New York leg would actually cost MORE than the Edmonton run. Go figure. And since even tourist class on the New York flight is only two seats across, we get to sit together, which is the most important part. As long as Susan gets the window and I get the aisle, we’re golden. (And, yes, thank you, I am aware of the ... read more

We’re now four and a half days into our seven day visit to New York City and so time to start this blog. We’ve also had a slightly quieter day today in an effort to give Terry’s sore feet a bit of rest. We arrived here last Monday after a very early (3:00am) start in Los Angeles, 6:00 am departure followed by a 5-hr flight to NYC. By the time we collected our luggage, caught a taxi and crawled through the heavy traffic at JFK it was probably about 3:30 pm before we reached our apartment in the Clinton Hill district of Brooklyn. Once again, we are staying in an AirBnB and chose to stay in Brooklyn rather than with the throngs of other tourists in Manhattan. Our apartment is lovely, a 1-bedroom affair in a ... read more

Przygoto... read more

When Kate and I travel , as it goes with most Airline employees , we fly standby. Generally it works out okay , but there is never any relaxing until you are occupying a seat and the cabin door has closed. In our past , an upgrade to Executive or Priemier or J or First Class or whatever, came with , maybe the tie you were wearing or whether you knew the Agent or the Flt Attendant or who knows, In our world now we have 3 opportunities to book an upgradeable ticket each year. If there is space available you will be assigned an executive seat. No bribing necessary. We started our adventure on the Dreamliner in the lay flat seats , nice breakfast, 2 movies!. Passed on the Port , but Kate had 2 ... read more

I'm having a teenage moment! When trying to pick musicals to attend on Broadway we decided on Dear Evan Hansen - which I am really excited to see. But ...... my heart has a special place for Waitress. It was written by Sara Barielles, who is my biggest girl crush, and I love the music. But we thought 1 was enough for 9 days. UNTIL ..... Al Roker announced that he would be doing a guest stint in the show. Well. That would be worth seeing. So we have TICKETS TO HIS OPENING NIGHT. Why capitals, you ask? Let me tell you. Chances are Sara Barielles will be there. Like in the same space as me. Breathing my air. It is going to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. I'll probably be singing backing vocals ... read more

After a long period of anticipation and planning, today our vacation has finally begun. We were up bright and early and headed for the airport. Well it certainly was early - earlier than when it was bright outside. Valerie was kind enough to stay at our house last night so she could get us to the airport by 5:00 this morning. The flight was not scheduled to leave until 7:00, but we wanted to avoid any possible TSA / airline problems. Anyway, she got us and our luggage loaded in her car and delivered at this really early hour – we kind of had an overnight Uber Driver. THANK YOU. We made it through the formalities at the airport without any problems and still had time for a light breakfast before boarding the plane. The flight ... read more
