Oct 9th I get up late and am hanging about the RV store at 9.30 when I notice some other cyclists roll up, a tandem and a pannier laden bike. So I meet Hughes and Sue (on the tandem) and Paul, all beyond retirement age, one of them ten years ! They set off on the same day as me from San Diego and are on the same route, its amazing we have'nt met before. They overnighted in Hillsboro so have traveled some distance before arriving at the lake. We ride together to Las Cruces. A really pleasant journey through the Rio Grande valley. This area has a great variety of agriculture, Cotton, Pecan trees, Vines , other stuff but mainly chiles which are everywhere The wind is not unkind being light and not directly against ... read more

Oct 8th It's a cold start from the 2,200 m campsite , thank god I can make a cup of tea, my hands are numb. I get away by 9 and start on the 1000ft , 300m climb to Emory pass, its a grind but you get the first hour cycling free as you are fresh, and I am there in less than an hour. On the way there is no traffic and I see four deers crossing the road, a bit startled by my appearence in this silent realm. The view from the pass is awsome and I spend about 40 minutes there, pictures or words cannot render justice to this view down to the rio grande valley. You could be forgiven for thinking you are in Pensilvania in these forested mountains. Well yipee its downhill ... read more

Oct 7th I get up at 7.15 , dawn, to find the bike troup clearing away breakfast and preparing to set off , they kindly offer me their left over doughnuts and orange juice before setting off to conquer the Emory pass on the road to Kingston (the same route I'll be taking) I bid them farewell and scoff the leftovers. I'm away by 9.15, curiously I pass a group of them heading back to Silver City as I leave town. Today is the toughest perhaps on the whole route, the dreaded Emory pass looms ahead 8328ft , 2,500m the highest point on the whole journey. At 10 miles out I stop at a junction and ponder my options, go right to Deming and shave 30 miles off the journey to El Paso and avoid the ... read more

0ct 6th At last I can get out of Lordsburg, a check on Google earth reveals that I have a long gradual climb of about 2,000 ft before descending into Silver City about 45 miles away, so much for avoiding the hills by going off the ACA map. I'm well organised in the morning for a change and set off at 9.15. The first part of the jouney is a very gradual ascent through the plains, it gets a bit harder as I reach apache mountain, but I am pleased and a little surprised to see the altitude counter on my GPS click off the hundreds of meters without causing undue tiredness or strain. At the highest point I cross the north american watershed, the grreat divide as the americans call it. The second half of ... read more

I have always wanted to go to Albuquerque in October to check out the hot air balloon fiesta. One of the must-see for the enthusiasts. The Albuquerque balloon fiesta is the biggest in the world, an anual nine-day event in every October, and has around 600 balloons from the USA and the world registered this year. It is considered one of the most photographed event in the world. In the morning and in weekend, hundred of hot air, colorful balloons were launching from the park and afloat to the sky, it is an amazing sight to be seen. I booked my flight 3 months earlier to take advantage of one of the lowest available. I flew Continental airline to Albuquerque via Houston. Arrived in Albuquerque in the afternoon and called the hotel to send a complimentary ... read more

Oct 5th Well the thunderstorm did come and from about 4am till 8am the heavens opened, I was dry inside the tent but everything around got a good soaking. By 9 I decided to cancel cycling and take a cabin for $34 and rest till everything was dry. I was reasonably productive changing the rear tyre which had a slow puncture , repairing my yellow sacks which had suffered abraison damage, and finaly sorting out the mattress with a permanent repair. All this and a siesta too ! In Lordsburg there is not much to do , my retiree friends tell me that the ghost town of 'shakespear' which is nearby is a massive dissapointment so I give that a miss. I t pains me to loose a day but it was a sensible decision.... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Santa Fe September 28th 2008

Saturday September 27, 2008 Thursday it was time to move on to warmer climes. Santa Fe was on our list, as was art by Georgia O’Keeffe. In our new Pitt Meadows home, there are two fireplace walls just waiting for special decoration and one of our ‘must do’s’ on this trip was to find some southwestern art. Santa Fe is famous as an artist haven, and it more than lived up to the reputation. We approached Santa Fe from the north on highway 84. Little did we know that when Kayla called several halts on the highway just north of Santa Fe to take photos of the glorious layered cliffs and spires, we were also photographing Georgia O’Keeffe’s home at Ghost Ranch. Right away we recognized the photos of Ghost Ranch taken by others, some of ... read more

Thrifty Travel Tip #5: Continental breakfasts are always Continental... even if you didn't EXACTLY stay in the hotel. Continental breakfasts are your friend. Hi Friends and Family! My oh my, what a day in the desert. We got off to a good start in the morning, even though we didn't have the best sleep. Sleeping in the car results in waking up about 15 times throughout the night to change positions and reconfigure your sleeping situation according to what parts of your body have fallen asleep or are cramped. In the very early hours of the AM, (I believe it was about 630,) we woke up and decided we were hungry. In order to travel on a budget, one must use the resources around them. For us, that means eating for free at hotels. One of ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Roswell September 10th 2008

After our episode in Deming we finally left Sunday morning for Roswell. We're not sure what it was we were expecting to find. It's just a small New Mexico town that has an alien/UFO story dating back to 1949. That's it. There is the UFO Museum & Research Center and then there are a few shops that sell alien themed T-shirts, shot glasses and such. I thought the lamp posts were original so please check the photos for one. The museum had a lot of the original newspaper articles from 1949 on display and replicas of crash debris based on descriptions that were given. There was a section about ancient cultures and supposed alien contact which was a different. I think if you're a hardcore believer it would be the place for you but I didn't ... read more
