Let the drama unfold... On Thursday we were traveling from Phoenix, AZ to Roswell, NM. It was only 88 degrees out but the Jeep computer came up with a "Transmission Overtemperature" alarm. This was a little curious because the temperature the day before was 109 with no problems at all. We got off at the next exit and brought it to the first shop we came across. The determination was that the Jeep would not get out of 1st gear. We stopped at the next motel and slept on it. What do we do? Repair the tranny? Donate the car and fly home? Rent a car? In the end we decided to buy a 2005 Ford Escape. It's a little smaller than the Grand Cherokee but we did what we had to. The whole process took ... read more

New Mexico is a spiritual place. The high altitude & dry air combine to give the sunlight an extra something that has long attracted artists and mystics. From the humble moradas of Los Penetentes to the elaborate churches of Santa Fe New Mexico hosts many of the most beautiful churches in North America. I have enjoyed photographing some of them: At the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, we view the Mysterous Staircase. The story goes that when the chapel was built there was no access to the choir loft. The chapel was too small for a regular stairway. The Sisters made a novena to St. Joseph, patron saint of carpenters. On the 9th & final day a man appeared with a donkey & toolbox asking for work. Months later the staircase was completed and the man ... read more

Although I live in South Carolina, my father-in-law lives in Chama, NM and we visit every summer. This was my third summer visiting since we've been married and since I saw there were no pics of Chama, I would share some. Although the town/village is very tiny, it boasts a lot of tourists in the summer (for the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad) and in the winter (for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing). I have only visited in the summer so that is what I will share. ... read more

Well, where we last left off, we'd gotten into Farmington, NM, but it was too late in the day to visit Aztec Ruins National Monument. So we went there this morning. It didn't open till 8:00, so we had breakfast a diner next to the hotel, then headed over. Actions tend to have equal and opposite reactions, and since we were originally planning on leaving the area at 8:00, that set us back a bit. However, we decided that it was worth it. In fact, the Aztec Ruins - which are not Aztec in origin at all - were well worth the $5 admission that the National Parks Service charges. As it turns out, these ruins are the work of Pueblo Indians and the name is a misnomer that was based on a poor understanding of ... read more

We just finished a quick trip to Albuquerque to check up on our grandson Diego. Had some trouble in Wyoming where our Saab died, more accurately, the Saab's battery gave up the ghost. Rumors via his mother that D is talking up a storm are mostly true. We had a fun time on the New Mexico RailRunner from downtown ABQ to downtown Bernalillo and back. Maybe this is the wave of the future. State and city governments building the necessary transportation from city to city. In this case it is Albuquerque to Santa Fe, which is supposed to be up and running by December 2008. They actually run down to Belen and out to Bernalillo in the north right now. See above map. I don't know what the morning and afternoon ridership is but the mid-day ... read more

We left Flagstaff this morning after pancakes at a local diner. Heading east, we stopped at the meteor crater between Winona and Winslow. It was a good ways off of the beaten path, but I suppose the crater was sort of in a fixed position and couldn't really be made closer to the highway... But that's alright. I was expecting a cheesy roadside attraction but was fairly impressed by the small but well-laid out and informative museum of space-related exhibits that were on the property. The crater itself was impressive, a huge hole in the ground. They had several viewing platforms set up so you could see it from different vantage points, and each had telescopes point at key features. I will allow, however, that I pr... read more
