Driving across the country for the fun of it, in spite of high gas prices. We're taking the southern scenic route from San Francisco back to western NY over the course of a couple weeks. Our projected itinerary is:
Day 1 - drive out through Yosemite, cross Death Valley, visit Rhyolite (ghost town), stay over in Beatty, NV
Day 2 - drive to Las Vegas, see stuff
Day 3 - drive to Williams, AZ so that we can catch the train the following morning to the Grand Canyon. Our route is to take us over the Hoover Dam, out to Oatman, AZ (wild west town), and up a fairly long stretch of Old US66
Day 4 - train to Grand Canyon, camp overnight
Day 5 - explore park, then take train back to Williams. Drive to Flagstaff to spend night.
Day 6 - drive to Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, Four Corners, then to Aztec Ruins.
Day 7 - drive to Roswell, with lunch in Albuqurque. Camp in Bottomless Lakes SP.
Day 8 - drive to Dallas, by way of the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX
Day 9 - head east, overnight in Nashville
Day 10 - drive to Great Smoky Mtn National Park, camp over night
Day 11 & 12 - camp in Virginia Beach
Day 13 & 14 - Washington DC, camping at Capitol KOA
Day 15 - head to Harrisburg by way of Gettysburg. Evening at Hershey Park
Day 16 - go home - finally!
