blog 03-27-19 Lunch in Hatch So yesterday I traveled from Demming to Caballo Lake State Park, a distance of about 80. This lake was made by building a dam on the Rio Grande to use as flood control and water retention for later irrigation. It became a state park and opened the lake up to recreation, boating, fishing, swimming and camping. My campsite overlooks the lake but the water level is so low that it is hard to see the water. It has a milky blue color that I will photograph tomorrow when the sun comes out. It has been cloudy for 2 days with a 30% chance of rain but the air is so dry that the water in the clouds evaporates before it can reach the ground. As I was coming north the valleys ... read more

blog 03-25-19 City of Rocks SP Today Pat and I had plans to travel north to the third state park in our area. It's name is City of Rocks and it is about a square mile right out of the Flintstones, it could pass for Bedrock. We went to the visitor's center and read some information about the park and saw a short film on how the park came to be. It was formed initially when a volcano erupted and left a layer of rock that ultimately was worn away from erosion. It wore away unevenly and left individual rocks standing, some in clusters. The campground is carved into the rock formations and each site is unique. We walked around for a while, in and around the rocks imagining what the different shapes represent. Our imaginations ... read more

blog 03-24-19 Cow Day Watson and I left early to go to the Rockhound State Park and Canyon Spring State Park for just 2 hours because at noon Louis was coming to wash my motorhome and car. Pat had arranged for Louis to come to wash and wax her motorhome and mine needed washing so badly I employed him too. On the road to the park there is a section that is open range, meaning there are no fences and cows roam wherever they want. The car way in front of me hit his brakes and as I got closer realized why. There was a huge long horn bull who decided the other side of the road was where he wanted to be. As I got closer he turned and stood on the edge of the ... read more

blog 03-22-19 We Made it Back Thursday was a day to catch up on necessary household chores, laundry, grocery shopping and a little cleaning. Friday morning Pat and I left to go on our adventure. We headed south to Columbus and drove through the Poncho Villa State Park to get a feel for the park to see if staying there was an option at some future date. Columbus is the site of the first invasion of the continental United States by a foreign country. In 1916 Poncho Villa and a band of men crossed the border and attacked Camp Furlong. Several days later General Pershing led an army of men across the border to punish Poncho Villa but they were not successful. The reason for the raid was never known. Our prime destination was just down ... read more

blog 03-20-19 Super Full Pink Moon Today's plan was to head to Silver City and see what it held for us. My new friend Pat and I left at 10 am and headed north for 57 miles through very dry sage brush and grasslands. There were a few cows here and there but not much else. We stopped in a little town called Hurley to see their claim to fame, a model train exhibit. The town was bigger than I expected but most of the houses looked like they were abandoned. The train set up was in an old mining company store complete with tin roof and old wood floors. There was surprising detail in the display and as soon as we walked in the door Pat was cornered by this lovely old gentleman who proceeded ... read more

blog 03-19-19 Rockhound The sun is shinning today and I went to Rock Hound State Park about 20 miles from here. I heard it was a beautiful place to camp and I wanted to see what it had to offer. It was beautiful and Watson and I took a walk on one of their trails to see if we could spot a treasure. You can take rocks home from here as long as they don't weigh more than 17 lbs. Oh wow, a legal place to gather rocks! It was mid day and starting to get hot so we didn't go far but I did manage to get 2 little rocks to add to my water garden at home. There were flowers everywhere and they are called Mexican Poppies, real beauties. Pictures I hope. I drove ... read more

For some reason the pictures won't upload, I'll try tomorrow. blog 03-17-19 Happy St Patrick's Day 03-16-19 was a stay in the camper day. I re organized the place and took what I haven't used out into the car so it's out of the way. Some cleaning happened too and I felt much better, less clutter. Lynne came over about 3:30 and we went for a little hike between rain and snow storms, yes snow! What's happening here!! I then went to Lynne's camper for happy hour til sunset time. The sky looked promising and there were several different aspects to the sun set. Pictures Time for some hot tea and bed. Poor Petunia was covered with frost this morning. It was below freezing last night and 53 inside the camper. It was a one dog ... read more

blog 03-14-19 Pi day and Happy Birthday Pat We woke to the sound of nothing. The wind had stopped! Watson went outside and walked around his pen in the sun for the first time in 2 days. By 9 am it was too warm for my sweatshirt because the sun was so intense. I put Watson's fence back in the car, took him for a walk and realized I had time to go down the street and wash poor Petunia. It was a do it yourself place and I put my quarters in and soaped and brushed then rinsed and got it all done for 8 quarters. It's not the best but she sure does look better. We finally pulled out about 11 am and headed north on 285 toward Artesia. It was much easier getting ... read more

blog 03-11 to 03-13-2019 Carlsbad Our campground was really nice but the weather sure wasn't. It was foggy and cool so I decided it was a good day to get to the caverns before it became crowded. Did I mention that all of Texas has spring break at the same time and this is the week. I got to the caverns about 10:30 only able to see the road in front of me it was so foggy. Not to worry about the cave, they keep it semi lit with no outside disturbances down there. I rode the elevator down the 752 feet where the trail begins. It is self guided so everyone can go at their own pace and enjoy what strikes them. Most of the cave is dry which surprised me but there were a ... read more
