blog 03-11-19 Terlingue to Carlsbad The start was slow but steady and by 10:30 we were on the road north toward Alpine. The nearest everything is in Alpine including the doctor. The people here in Terlingue and Big Bend Nat'l Park have to go to Alpine for the nearest doctor, 90 miles away. As a result the tour company's staff are extensively trained in emergency medicine. Lots of bad things can happen here so it's a necessary skill. About 1/2 an hour down the road an alarm went off somewhere in the back of the camper. No place to pull over, Watson upset and me worried it was a stressful 30 min til I could get off the road. I narrowed the sound down to the fuse panel on the upper cabinet so I turned off ... read more

We hooked up and got an early start from Davis Mountains SP. We headed down along empty roads back to US90, no traffic at all, these are the lonely roads. Back on 90 we headed west towards the sad little town of Valentine TX. Not much still moving there, mostly all wrecked cars and abandoned buildings, with a few mangy mutts staring at the traffic, this is now what the rural West looks like. Soon we approached Van Horn, down in a shallow valley before some distant blue peaks. You could see the transport trucks inching along on I10 from ten miles away. Back onto the SuperSlab, we crawled our way west again, through the smoggy sprawl of booming El Paso and on into New Mexico. It was Sunday, so the traffic was light, but we ... read more

DANGEROUS DAN TUCKER I am damned if I know what to make of Dangerous Dan Tucker. He seems to have appeared in New Mexico from nowhere, served his uses as a lawman, and then disappeared to nowhere. He first appears in New Mexico as the operator of a roadhouse at City of Rocks in Grant County, New Mexico. When he lost his lease on it in 1877 he moved on to Silver City, which was a far livelier community. City of Rocks would have been a convenient place for a man to hide out from the law if he thought the law was after him. Silver City would have been a convenient place for man to hide out from the law under an assumed identity if he could just go straight. Early records in Silver City ... read more

THE PUNITIVE EXPEDITION During the early morning hours of March 9, 1916 Pancho Villa launched a surprise attack on the peacefully snoring community of Columbus, NM. Pancho was all mad because the Wilson Administration recognized Venusiano Carranza as the rightful leader of Mexico and imposed an embargo on guns and ammo sold to Pancho. There was a fellow living at the Commercial Hotel in Columbus who had been supplying Pancho with guns and ammo, but because of the embargo could no longer deliver them. He still owed Pancho money for the failed shipment. Pancho wanted a pound of flesh from that guy, and he wanted to rob the custom house, and the bank, and maybe capture a few cavalry horses too. The Commercial Hotel was the first establishment that Pancho’s men visited and the gun dealer ... read more

April 6th A youngster named George Adolphus Scarborough squalled his way into the world on October 2, 1859 in Natchitoches Parish, LA. His folks made their way into Texas and when George came of age he became a cowboy. By 1885 he was appointed sheriff of Jones County, TX. He would remain a lawman for the rest of his life. Things rolled merrily along for him, he had taken a wife and started in raising a passel of noisy children. By 1895 he had been appointed as a U S Deputy Marshal in El Paso. At that time there was a surly outlaw named Martin M’Rose who was thumbing his nose at the Texas authorities from over in Juarez. Texas authorities badly wanted to extradite him. His wife moved to El Paso and hired a lawyer ... read more

LOTTIE DENO Carlotta J. Thompkins came bouncing into the world on April 21, 1844 in Warsaw, KY. She was the oldest of the Thompkins children. Warsaw is a thriving little community slap on the Ohio River about halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati. Her dad was a lively farmer, sportsman, and horse breeder, but he failed to produce male progeny. As she was coming of age her dad charged her with the welfare of the family and began to teach her what he knew of the world. She accompanied him on business trips to sell hemp in Michigan, and to attend horse racing in Nawlins, He also taught her to be a riverboat gambler When the Civil War broke out her dad promptly resigned from his position in the Kentucky General Assembly, got a commission in the ... read more

We flew into El Paso on Wednesday, January 16th, and drove to Deming, NM, where we spent the night. The next morning, we drove about 25 miles north to the City of Rocks State Park where we hiked the Table Mountain Trail and returned to the trailhead by way of a spur trail that took us through the middle of the collection of huge boulders that make up the “city of rocks.” The hike to the top of Table Mountain, which is really more a mesa than a mountain, took us to a neat high point that afforded a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside. We trekked back down the trail to the spur trail that took us through the area of boulders, marveling at how they came to be there in the middle of the ... read more

New Mexico Hwy 518 runs from Taos South to Las Vegas and all my pics are from there. Coming from the Rio Grande Gorge I started on NM 518 about 15 miles South of Taos and finally made it to Las Vegas. My first visit there was in the 1980s when things were different and that highway was New Mexico Hwy 3. I included some of my old pics in the 1980s shot on my 135 mm SLR on print film. This blog is about me finding a private camp on the Rio Pueblo; virtually all my pics are shot there except the few last shot in Las Vegas. I arrived at my very old camp that is Comales Camp Ground by the confluence of the small Comales creek. These pics are from the 1980s when ... read more

From Flagstaff I could not bear to drive home on Interstate Hwy 40. The weather is getting colder here in late September and snow is possible. I drove US Hwy 64 across Northern New Mexico especially to see the Rio Grande Gorge, in the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). I think now part of that is a NM State Park. It was cold and raining in New Mexico. When I got to Tierra Amarilla on US 64 it was snowing fairly hard. I had enough driving for the day and would look for an emergency camp when I reach the Carson National Forest. When camping in the back country, it is best to plan on anything especially bad weather. The paved US 64 had not frozen yet but the driving in the snow was bad. It ... read more

From family we started on our way down I-40 west towards home, that is, we headed westward, with a side trip north to Taos. We needed to go to Santa Fe and Taos for supplies: more fresh roasted green chili, fresh ristrias, fresh ground chili powder, and fresh food from our favorite restaurants. We stopped at our favorite Santa Fe restaurant, Maria’s, for tamales, enchiladas and soul food. We had fun introducing Zaya to Sopapillas with honey, something she didn’t know about. Zaya, after trying one, then set her mind to finding the best sopapilla in New Mexico. However, she also decided that she wanted to live inside Maria’s, but unfortunately for her, we did not allow her to stay behind. From Santa Fe. we drove onto Taos where we had an RV site for that ... read more
