Home, Questa, New Mexico Yes, we made it home yesterday. We broke the 350-mile trip from my sister’s place to our place into two driving days this year. Mostly we did that because trying to park, level, and begin unpacking the trailer after driving a long day is just too exhausting. When that tired, you make a lot of mistakes and even simple things become very frustrating. So Monday we drove just 250 miles down, using Colorado highways, down to Lathrop State Park, just west of Walsenberg. Then we drove the last 100 miles home yesterday morning, arriving around 11:30. That gave us the rest of the day to get the trailer situated in its spot, and begin unpacking the trailer, especially the refrigerator and freezer. The trip the last two days was really unremarkable. On the drive from Frisco to Albuquerque, the landscape changed dramatically from scrubby ranchland to high plains with buttes and mesas before passing through the Sandia Mountains. We gained over a mile in elevation along the way. We stopped for authentic Texas barbecue at K. Bryant Barbecue in tiny Childress, TX. The restaurant is housed in an old hardware store and the brisket and pulled pork were delicious! We got to talk with the owner and sign the pillar after our meal.... read more

Our journey from Amarillo, TX to Colorado Springs, Co was rather uneventful but we got a good taste of the wide open Spaces found in that area. There were several observations in this area of the USA that were noteworthy. We found that a lot of Ranchers and Farmers have learned how to supplement their income handsomely by installing large windmill farms generating electricity and oil wells supplying the rest of the world with fuel. We saw a lot of large ranches where you were miles from your nearest neighbor. A concept which is very to most of the USA who live within cities and are within a few feet of neighbors they may not even know. We also saw that the roadside parks catered to horse owners with Corrals for their horses to stretch their ... read more

Stayed the night at Carlsbad RV Park. It provided the luxury of showers, a swimming pool and washers and dryers. After cleaning up and relaxing we headed to the Caverns the next morning. The crowd wasn’t too bad. We had a few moments that were quiet without anyone nearby. We hiked in via the natural entrance. Dagny did really well but started to get tired towards the end of walking around The Big Room. She fell asleep in my arms so we decided to take the elevator back up. ... read more

We arrived too late to go to the Petroglyphs National Park, so we found a truck stop and stayed the night. Next morning we headed to the park which is on the edge of Albuquerque. It was hot but with a couple breaks in the shade we walked around a few trails. We also got to watch a mommy bird feed it’s babies in a nest in the eaves of the bathrooms. The low battery light was periodically coming on in our truck and everytime James tried to check it, it would turn off. After some googling we decided the alternator or the regulator on the alternator might be going out. We went to a parts store and James replaced the alternator right in the parking lot! No more issues after that. :-D... read more

We reluctantly left San Miguel de Allende (and our clay tennis court lifestyle) at the beginning of May, travelling in convoy with Jen, Gav and Ruby the Land Rover to the US-Mexico border. Our last night in Mexico was spent at a campground in Potrero Chico, popular with climbers from all over the world who come to scale its enormous cliffs. Jen and Gav very kindly threw me an early 40th birthday party, complete with cake, candles and a 'tuneful' rendition of happy birthday, and I spent the rest of the night explaining to all the campground well-wishers that the actual day was still 3 weeks away! I wanted to cling on to every last day of being in my 30s, after all! Crossing the border was uneventful, and we didn't even see the office where ... read more

Mileage: 224 miles Farmington to Santa Fe, New Mexico Pam woke up and told us about one of her dreams. She dreamed that there was an actual Escalante Stair Case with 1000 steps and that Susan and Claire dared her to go up. She climbed all the stairs and when she finally made it, she told us that there was nothing spectacular about the view. Breakfast was interesting. Claire went to get the scrambled eggs and they were the worst looking eggs she’d ever seen; that was until Pam brought over her hard boiled eggs that were frozen solid. They were as hard as ice cubes. Pam tried to thaw them out via hot water but it wasn’t happening. Finally the “food” person came out and we all asked for new eggs. After breakfast we packed ... read more
