Clayton Lake State Park, Clayton, New Mexico We knew we were in no shape to drive all the way home yesterday. It would have been a long grueling 450 mile trip and we would have arrived to face the mountain road and docking the trailer at dusk. That didn't seem either fun or safe, so we decided to do a fairly long driving day and then a short one today, getting us in at a decent hour in the afternoon. We took Interstate 40 west to Amarillo and stopped for lunch at one of the many steakhouses lining the frontage road. When in the Texas panhandle, you eat steak, of course, so I had a steak dinner for lunch. We ate on the patio and were able to bring the girls with us - it was ... read more

Geo: 35.1241, -106.768Being on the small Pacific Princess ship was great again today. No long lines at disembarkation! We spent the short time after we had to vacate our mini-suite in the Platinum Lounge where they had coffee, tea, and breakfast snacks. Our disembarkation group was called right on time. We got through all the rigmarole easily and were on the transfer bus to the airport about twenty minutes after leaving the lounge. Check-in at the United counter in the airport was quick—no lines there either. When we were next in line for passport check in airport security, a man hurried up beside me and went ahead of me to give his passport. I let him cut in line without comment (except to Philip). That turned out to be a bad idea for him. He was ... read more

A+... read more

Yesterday was a downday in more than the usual way. We received confirmation that our friend and neighbor in Questa, James Hagerty, died in the early hours of the morning a couple of days ago. Instead of a regular post, I'd like to write a few words in his memory. James was a key part of the Pinnabette Mountain story. He was, in my understanding of things, a true 'mountain man'. Although small in stature, he was large in character. With the wrinkles and creases in his face, he presented an almost timeless quality, and expressed a wisdom that only a life well-lived could exhibit. He had a wry smile that made you wonder just what mischief he might have been up to. He had some strange habits. He bragged about how he could shift his ... read more

Geo: 35.1241, -106.768We left Amarillo this morning and made it home by about 2 this afternoon. Very nice trip, all-in-all. We put about 1,700 miles on the new RAV 4. It rode well on the trip. I like the new features on the cruise control that add to the safety of the vehicle. It took a while to get used to the way the speed changed when other cars appeared in front of me and when they moved to another lane. I like it though. We had a good time on this trip. My favorite things were meeting Gary and Candi and seeing all the travel experts at the show. ... read more

Another long day with 5 miles of hill up 5000 ft, ok some really good down hill but do not understand why uphill is getting harder and not easier. Frank shepards me so I do not get too far behind. Not impressed with campsite at Globe.on community play ground, one loo each for men and women but no doors, hot water nor showers. Grim. Slept well but woke to sleet aneed rain Left at 7.30 and severe uphill in rain was real eye wake up call. After early climb mostly flat thru Apache Indian reservations. Stopped for hot chocolate near Geronimo just to keep warm. Signs of chronic deprivation everywhere.. Continued to Safford but on arrival campsite closed so decamped to cheap motel which was welcome. As too windy to cook went to local Mexican takeaway. ... read more
