Day 1 - Atascadero, CA to Kingman, AZ We left the house only a little later than planned and started heading east. Once we hit Barstow CA, we did a lot of reminiscing about our Route 66 Trip 4 years ago. If you are interested in that trip, read it's blog . Our goal today was Kingman, AZ. These first few days will be mostly driving as we try to get to somewhere we haven't been before. The highlight of the day was stopping for lunch at a Long John Silver's in Barstow where Tony created a perfectly beautiful ketchup cup for Anne. The KOA in Kingman, AZ is very nice if you are headed out that way. we set-up camp, hit the pool, made dinner, and relaxed with a few games. Day 2 - Kingman, ... read more

The beginning of the road trip across four states. The first day saw us meeting up with our travelling companions, loading up the truck with bags, water and other essentials for the next week of travel, and leaving Kansas. to travel to New Mexico via the Oklahoma panhandle. We drove through Cimarron on the way to Taos, stopping off at St James Hotel, an historic establishment that was frequented by many infamous characters during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Guests included Jessie James, Buffalo Bill Cody & Annie Oakley, Billy the Kid, Bat Masterson, Davy Crockett Doc Halliday. Names I am sure we are all familiar with. Wyatt Earp stayed here for three nights on the way on his fateful journey from Dodge City to Tombstone in 1880. Later came Zane Grey, an author ... read more

We took 380 all the way into Carrizozo, NM and stayed at the Valley of the Fire Recreation Area ($18/night). God provides the most beautiful landscape: on one side of the trailer there are breathtaking mountains and on the other side are amazing volcanic rock formations that stretch on for miles and miles. The only problem that arose from camping here is that the wind gusts that kept us up most of the night shaking the trailer, we even at one point parked the truck along side the trailer to create a bit of a wind break which can't really say helped. After the long windy night we awoke to another beautiful morning and thankfully most of the wind had passed, but that beast of a sun was working overtime already. Nothing else to do, but ... read more

It is really nice to not spend a day driving to our next location, we choose not to take highway 82 over to White Sands National Park due to the steep grade and roll backs. We were told this is a beautiful drive but not suited for a travel trailer. We decided to take 285 to Roswell and stay a night at Bottomless Lakes State Park, the lakes here are a beautiful blue and are formed from sink holes. This is a must see for anyone in the area even if you do not plan on taking a swim in the mineral lakes. We headed into town, Roswell, to visit the UFO Museum. The museum itself was well put together well, it was set up that you walk through in chronological order reading the events of ... read more

Today we got to go to our first National Park, Carlsbad Caverns. We left early in the morning and thankfully the weather was much nicer than the day prior. It took us about an hour to get there, we arrived to a very windy and curvy road, making us very grateful to not have the trailer in tow. We entered the base of the National Park into a mountainous area, much different than what we are use to on the east coast; the mountains here are rocky, sandy hills with a little bit of vegetation. We finally made it to the top where the parking, entrance and gift shop are located. The view from here was beyond words, so we will include a few pictures. We went ahead and purchased the National Park pass for $80 ... read more

We arrived in Santa Fe and it has really grown since I was last there. The growth has made it lose some of it's charm for me, but it is still a great place to visit. We enjoyed a trip down to the plaza to see the Loretta Chapel and had a great New Mexican buffet lunch at La Fonda. We used the free Santa Fe shuttle from the Railroad Yard as parking down toward the plaza is difficult. Enjoyed visiting with the first shuttle driver as he use to train race horses when I worked at the race track, so we reminisced. We drove up to Taos one day. The drive was beautiful and the mountains had lots of snow on them. Lunch was at Ranchos Plaza Grille which is located in an original part ... read more

Today was mainly a slog along I40 to meet Rob. In fact all but the last 60 miles were on I40. The first 300 miles or so were flat and barren even at this time of the year. Occasional wind gusts up to 20 miles and hour kept me on my toes, well gripping the handlebars at least. Not much use of cruise control and one handed riding. I was amazed at the wind farms as I crossed from Oklahoma into Texas. Having always associated Texas with oil it seemed ironic to me - donkey wells replaced by windmills. 9% of power in Texas comes from wind - more than any other state - go Texas! The highlight was a visit to Russell's Car Museum at exit 369 of I40 in New Mexico. Excellent Ruben sandwich ... read more
