When we got married, my husband and I received a book titled "101 Places to See in the United States" as a wedding gift. We had no idea how exciting that little book would be to us! As newlyweds, we had more free time on our hands than ever before and we were eager to explore the world! As children, we'd both only gone to the beach once a year with our families, and we'd never really explored the rest of the United States. So, even though we definitely want to go overseas and see foreign lands at some point, we were both super excited to see what the rest of the country had to offer! One of the first spots that caught our eye was the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. It was part of ... read more

Questa, NM Our big trip of the year is about to launch! The girls know something is up and are as anxious as we are. We’ve been working hard to get ready. Got the dogs a good grooming to reduce shedding. Also had to get them started on Frontline - we are headed into tick and flea country again. Brought the trailer out of its winter stasis - tested all the gas and electric systems, and sanitized the water tanks. Had to get a new sewer hose so we can take care of that little nasty chore. As we are packing the rear closet of the trailer, the bottom of the closet fell out right on top of the water heater. Wish I could say we had caused it, but really it wasn’t my fault. I ... read more

As we sit here, in our old house with the chaos of packing all around us, we are also setting up our itinerary. Herb is always organized and he likes to know where we are going and when and he carefully builds a binder with all the various reservation confirmations and addresses to enter into the GPS. It's also a good way to keep our eye on the prize. So far, we are leaving here May 4, stopping in Amarillo overnight then spending a week in Oklahoma City.. Then we will head on to Branson, MO for a few days. We haven't yet looked at the shows that are available, but we do know we are going to go to Carbondale, IL, so Herb can look at the college campus, Southern Illinois University, Extension Program that ... read more

Timeline is firming up. The furniture we are keeping will be stored in a Pod until we get tired of traveling. The rest will be sold, sold with the house, given to family or Goodwill. The Pod will be delivered April 13th, loaded April 14. There will be some cleaning of the house, etc. between the 14th and the 19th when we close. The new buyers, JR and Emily Shaw are a delightful couple and we really hit it off. We are going to have a celebratory dinner with them at Ruth's Chris the 19th. We have a space in an RV park in the area starting the 14th, and Herb will have some rehab on his foot until May 2. After that we are "Free to move about the country"! I am a little daunted ... read more

COOKE’S SPRING Southwestern Indians passing through the area have been using the water at Cooke’s Spring for thousands of years. It was then, and still is a reliable source of water year around. The spring was not on the El Camino Real when the Spanish came to New Mexico, but Governor de Anza knew of it in 1780 and his soldiers used it to chase around after Indians who had been marauding Spanish settlements. Finally in 1846 Colonel Phillip St George Cooke, in command of the Mormon Battalion, came upon the spring by accident and the Mormons planted their flag on it. It has been known to White America as Cooke’s Spring ever since. The Mormon Battalion was tasked with building a road between Santa Fe and California that did not follow the difficult Gila River ... read more

I have started/continued to get my TravelBlog (thank you, Hilde, so much for giving me the site) and have added a few email addresses. Obviously, it won't really start until we hit the road sometime in May. But the site seems to have some amazing flexibility and I will periodically add stuff.... read more

We packed up at our fine little site on the Devils River and pointed west again, this time for New Mexico. We ran the short distance south to Rt 90, just outside of Del Rio, then turned west for Sanderson. We've traveled this stretch of highway before, and it's a fine drive. We crossed the Pecos River on the high bridge, and looked down on the water that we kayaked last year. It was remarkable how much lower the river was this year, almost a mud flat looking south toward it's meeting with the Rio Grand, I don't think that even a canoe of kayak could make it through. Water is a real and growing problem out here. At Sanderson, we turned north on Texas 285 for the run to Fort Stockton, where we could rejoin ... read more

White Sands is truly one of the worlds greatest and rarest of natural wonders. The park's 275 square miles of dazzling white gypsum dunes can be seen from miles up into the Sacramento Mountains and the Jefferson National Forest. As we drove down the valley leaving the snow-covered town of Cloudcroft at 6200 feet, in the distance it looked as if another great snow had fallen on the Chihuahuan Desert some 20+ miles away. Unlike many of the parks we've visited, White Sands is dog friendly and the dunes are open for exploration and fun. There are very few restrictions on where you can wander and if you do get disoriented, you can always follow your foot prints back. It was a warm and sunny (78 degree) day when Mi Hyon, Maggie and I wandered into ... read more

Today's plan included, seeing Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and Sitting Bull Falls. The in the past few days we have driven about 400 miles and it was starting to tire me more than I had expected, so Mi Hyon insisted on driving today. It was a great help and fun to sit as a passenger just taking in the scenery without having to watch the road. The day amounted to a marathon touring effort that was as rewarding as it was exhausting. We left the RV around 9:30 for Carlsbad Caverns and arrived in about 45 minutes, well ahead of the crowd that started arriving when we were finishing up. Words and pictures can never describe the beauty of the Caverns!! The Park Service has done an amazing job laying out the paths, the ... read more
