Our campground was really nice but the weather sure wasn't. It was foggy and cool so I decided it was a good day to get to the caverns before it became crowded. Did I mention that all of Texas has spring break at the same time and this is the week.
I got to the caverns about 10:30 only able to see the road in front of me it was so foggy. Not to worry about the cave, they keep it semi lit with no outside disturbances down there. I rode the elevator down the 752 feet where the trail begins. It is self guided so everyone can go at their own pace and enjoy what strikes them. Most of the cave is dry which surprised me but there were a few places where there is moisture and the building is ongoing. It is an enormous cave and the large room is really huge. It took me 2 hours to go a little more than half way and there was a different formation around every curve in the path.
The path was very user friendly with a rail on each side, paved surface
and gradual up and downs. It was very dark with lights showing different formations or a little grotto like alcove. There was one place that had different colors in the stone and some places that were shiny because they were wet. I have included lots of pictures.
The ride back home was a little more interesting because I could see the road, in some places that was scary. We wound around limestone cliffs with a creek at the bottom and desert plants.
Back home I listened to the weather channel because the wind was starting to pick up. The forecast was for very stormy weather, severe thunderstorms, a 50% chance of a tornado and 50 mph winds, with gusts of 70. Oh boy, what to do first. I covered my chair in the tarp and laid it down on the ground by the camper tire, made sure the skylight was closed tight and all windows and hung on. I called the office to find out where the nearest shelter was and they said the office, I would drive there if needed.
I packed a bag with all my important papers, money, prescriptions and of course the camera
and computer. They waited by the door. Every now and then I would open the door and look at the sky and it did get a little green at one point. There was rain coming down in sheets that started with a little hail and thunder that made Watson shake, he has never been afraid before. I shook too.
The wind shook the camper so that all my hanging decorations were swinging all around and a wine glass in the sink rolled back and forth. All we could do was hold on as I watched the weather channel people carry on about how this wonderful storm was forming. At least I wasn't in the area that produced snow..
The wind blew from Monday afternoon til Wednesday night then finally let up. I pretty much stayed inside and so did Watson, the poor little guy got blown sideways, that was enough for him.
Every time I opened the door I had to hold it with 2 hands to keep it from flying off it's hinges, this is not an exaggeration. School was cancelled as was work for the oil field guys so traffic was terrible. I wanted to
go to Walmart for some food and when I got there I couldn't open my door the wind was coming sideways to me. Finally there was a short break and I got to the door only to find out that they had just lost power and Walmart was CLOSED !
I found a grocery store that was open but getting there was a nightmare because the traffic lights were out so everyone had to treat the intersections as if there was a stop sign. I made it, got home and vowed not to leave the camper again. And I didn't.
