The drive from Gunter Hill Campground on R.E. (Bob) Woodruff Lake in Montgomery AL to Benchmark RV Park in Marion MS took me back over the Selma to Montgomery Trail until I reached Selma when I began to see some new real estate. The drive of about 157 miles and about 3 hours was without incident, and my arrival at Benchmark RV Park was, thankfully, routine. I had a very short list for Meridian, particularly when compared to the ambitious list I had the week prior, and started at the Mississippi Industrial Heritage Museumat the historic Soulé Steam Feed Works in Meridian MS. I was somewhat puzzled by the term “steam feed.” The majority of products invented by George W. Soulé and manufactured and marketed by his company served the lumber industry. Because steam was the ... read more

Authenticity is often hard to come by. We all seek it as it provides a feeling of both truth and originality. As travelers, this is one of the reasons we travel, to see things that are not necessarily contrived or otherwise. But when you visit the Mississippi Delta region and roll in to Clarksdale, you instantly discover that you’ve entered a place where something is real and true…..The Blues. Now the quote above is attributed to McKinley Morganfield....you may know him as Muddy Waters. Ask any rock 'n roll artist from the 1960's and they'll tell you the same......the blues begat rock 'n roll. As a matter of lore, Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil at what is widely known as “The Crossroads.” This is where highway 49 and highway 61 intersect. Great ... read more

After taking a Greyhound from Shreveport, LA to Jackson, MS, we hitchhiked the almost 60 miles to the Rocky Springs free campgrounds on the Natchez Trace Parkway. We endured two days of nonstop rain, a leaky tent, and had our food stolen by raccoons. The third day there, the park's maintenance man pulled up to chit chat, and offered to let us come stay at his house for the night to dry out, shower, and eat a home cooked meal. After a few hours of talking, we came to an agreement that we could stay at his house while we cleaned up his back yard of trees and piles of rotten lumber, and in exchange, he would pay for our tickets to Fort Smith, AR. so we can start our exploration of the Ozarks. Today is ... read more

It was on our route but it was also where my brother and his family was stationed in the Navy at one point. My dad and I drove down to visit them on base while they were there and I thought it meaningful to make that our Mississippi stop with little hope for much to write about considering everyone including my family who lived there questioned, "Why?" This gambling trip was a bit of a roller coaster. This will be longer as I will just put the gambling days all in one blog. Monday Up early to find some breakfast. Dave liked playing cards at the Roadhouse last time so we head in that direction. Roadhouse had no options open for grub. Walked over to Horseshoe. Breakfast at their buffet. Delicious breakfast and their omelette lady totally rocked it. Back over to Roadhouse as Dave wanted to find one particular card game - he didn't find it. I played through $20 but no luck. Also the vibe just wasn't the same there. We went over to Gold Strike. We had forgotten our player's cards so needed to get new ones. Found out we had $10 free play each. Walked through the card tables ... read more

"She says": This part of the trip was a trip down memory lane. I grew up with Elvis' music as a lot of you have. As we headed south from Nashville the surrounding landscape changed again....now we are seeing cotton fields and strange vines growing over many trees and bushes. The rv park was right next door to Graceland gate. We spent the day walking around the shops and looking at all the "stuff" that they were selling.....yes I did buy something to take home. Hahaha. The mansion was amazing. Very dated, but so cool that Elvis lived there with Priscilla and their daughter Lisa Marie. Everything was personal and showed his life well. The grounds were beautiful, unfortunately there were no horses in the fields, but you could imagine what it would look like with ... read more

Getting to an anchorage late in the day is not a good idea. We ended up near s stump field exposed to the weather. Sure enough the wind came up and it made for a noisy night with water slapping on the hull. Oh well better luck next night. There are 12 locks from the start of the Tenn-Tom which is a series of rivers 450 miles long. We transitted 7 of these locks today. We had to get the boat on plane for the first 3 locks because on week ends they open on the hour. They are only 6 to 8 miles apart so missing one would have meant a fair wait. We made it with no waiting and no other boats in the lock. Last time there were 6 of us which meant ... read more

A long day today but very pleasant. We had a restful night at Swallow Bluff Island near Saltillo Tennessee. The guide mentioned that there were goats on the island and low and behold, there they were when we set out this morning. They live on the island and apparently have for many years as our guide is not new. There is evidence of a man made shelter so I imagine someone feeds them in the winter. The weather was ideal and the water like a sheet of glass. Love this River, nice homes clean water and very little traffic. No more floating debris! Gentle rolling hills with limestone rock and lush vegetation. No shortage of herons, osprey and even wild turkeys today, we even spotted dear on the shoreline. We transited through the highest lock yet ... read more

THE BLUES HIGHWAY: Desegregation from Clarksdale to Natchez. Cotton...gotta love it or hate it. If I was black and working the plantations in Clarksdale...slave or sharecropper...cutting my hands on the pods...reckon I'd hate it. If I was a plantation owner...had one of those stupendous mansions in Natchez...once the home of more millionaires than any other city in the World...reckon I'd love it. But I'm just a humble dancer...reflecting...pretty content with my lot. ****** The polar vortex is hitting hard...icy wind rattling our bones...whistling through the cracks in our sharecroppers shack...huddling together for warmth...conversation...and our love of the blues. Gary & Tom from Rochester, New York joining us for breakfast at Shack Up Inn. Tom is a university lecturer researching the history of the Blues...pouring over manuscripts piecing together f... read more

J'ai bien réussi à ... read more
