THE BLUES HIGHWAY: Take off your overcoat girl...so we can see your moves. When Denise drives really fast...and my body tenses...she threatens to put me in the boot. The boot of the Cadillac SRX is quite spacious...so it's not too bad when she puts me in it. But today is a special day. Denise says she's going to get an esky...put it in the boot...and make it into a bed-sitter! Threaten all you like my love...my own pad...I can hardly wait. ****** It's Sunday. Leaving Memphis Tennessee...the BB King All Stars ringing in our ears. Playing their CD as we enter Mississippi...farmlands and heaps of big "Have fun at our casinos in Tupelo" signs. I tense...Den stops. Zillions of birds rising like a puff of smoke. Me thinks Den has stopped to put me in the ... read more

Der OBC findet seine Wurzeln im Mississippi Delta. Ehrfürchtig zitieren wir hier Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, B.B. King. Im Shack Up Inn ist die Geschichte noch immer lebendig. Jam Session in Jackson, Hodl dominiert das Piano - Nutin' but the Blues... Dann weiter nach Baton Rouge.... read more

Left NO Saturday morning & drove up the Old River Road which hugs the Mississippi River. Checked out some gorgeous antebellum plantation homes from the 1800's that have been beautifully maintained. The river is massive. Stayed in a B&B in a little town called Port Gibson that was the site of a battle during the American Civil war, then on to Vicksburg Sunday which was also a famous civil war site, where 1000's of confederates lost their lives. So much history...... read more

The mighty Mississippi

“The Mighty Mississippi” we paddled off late afternoon and after the usual safety spiel we went out on deck to view the passing scenery of barges, other river traffic and sunset as we wound our way upstream. Oak Alley Plantation: our first sunrise on the Mississippi was lovely and when morning came we were greeted with a sight of the most beautiful avenue of age old oak trees enticing one to walk from the river to the mansion which was built in 1839 when sugar in the river region was flourishing. St. Francisville: with the American Queen hop on/off bus stopping at various places it was very easy to see this small interesting little town and very pleasant to walk along the streets. I visited several places then the Grace Episcopal Church which happened to be ... read more

Two summer ago, we went on a one week road trip of the southern states of the USA. Here is the first part which is about Mississippi. TUPELO We entered the state of Mississippi the first time from Alabama. Our destination was Tupelo, the birthplace of the King, the one and only King of Rock 'n' Roll, that is. Memphis in the state of Tennessee is better known as being the home of Elvis Presley, but Tupelo was where he was actually born of poor parents, and lived his formative years in a two room house (more like a shack) on the outskirts of Tupelo. Tupelo is a small town and we didn't have any trouble finding it, or the location of the house where Elvis was born. I expected to see a lot of tourists ... read more

Geo: 30.3972, -88.5382Thought I would take a week or so to write another update but when things go from bad to worse, why not share with your friends. It almost seems like everything we try we hit a glitch.....some small, some big, but in total, we certainly see a pattern. Started with the change of our favorite bar the first day, a foggy morning to start on the second, buying a 12 pack of beer for the t-bag only to discover they were baby beers of 10 ounce each, every gas pump we pull up to is out of order so we have to pull around to another, the weather turning to arctic so we have to bag camping and stay extra nights in a hotel, our favorite place to get blackened gator tail is closed ... read more

The one about what remains of Katrina Up very early – that stupid one hour time change is going to rock my boat for a long time. But, there sure is one good thing about being so far east in a time zone. The sky was bright at 6:00 am. The sun was up over the yard arm way before 7, and when I was on the road at 7:30 the dew had dried off the windshield. First stop, McDonalds. I have been Jonesing for a bacon/egg/cheese/English muffin for a long time now, and it sure went down good. Funny story, but not so funny, but funny anyway. I ran out of tissues this morning, and rather than use the skinny toilet paper you have to use in RVs, I figured I would appropriate a large ... read more

October 4, 2014 (Saturday) (Double click on a picture to enlarge it) As I was looking for a motel last night I passed a sign for Vicksburg National Military Park. I did some research last night to see what it was and decided to go this morning. I’m only 360 miles from home so I had time. Vicksburg was the last placed still controlled by the confederate army in the civil war. Grant sent his men down to try and take control so the union army would be able to control all of the Mississippi river which was a major supply route. The battle ground is now Vicksburg National Military Park. I stopped at the visitor center first. They had a film and a museum showing the battles that took place there. I took the 16 ... read more

October 3, 2014 (Friday) I turned on the TV when I woke up this morning to check on the weather. Rain was supposed to be moving in and I wanted to get down the mountain before it started raining. They said rain should be in the area in an hour so I jumped out of bed, took a quick shower, finished loading up the car and was down the mountain in 40 minutes. I stopped at the condo office checked out and started heading down the road to home. When I left the condo office the GPS tried to take be back over the bad road I came in on Monday. I ignored the GPS. There was no way I was going back over that road. It started raining on me about 20 minutes down the ... read more
