I recently enjoyed a work trip up to Baltimore (Maryland), and found myself with a morning to kill due to a cancelled meeting on the final day. My work colleague, Sean, who also doubled as my tourist guide suggested a trip to Fort McHenry, battle site during the English/American War of 1812, and known as the birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner. Now I always had pictures in my head of the American forces stoutly defending the fort against the better trained and equipped redcoats, teaching them a lesson in tenacity they would not soon remember (not unlike the way we beat the Poms in the Cricket world cup, but I digress.....). However, the story doesn't quite go like that..... After giving US forces in DC a bit of a 'pantsing', the Brits headed for Baltimore ... read more

Is it rain or ice? The storm that struck Laurel, MD this morning was just the right side of rain. The temp was 35 and there were some slick spots, but once on 95 S it was just wet and thankfully deserted. I've never seen 95 so empty, great to leave on a Sunday. My speed was moderate, not going over 58 , and since the van is higher, there was not a problem seeing through the rain spray from the trucks.Mr. Oscar was a model passenger, watching the world go by at times and sleeping others. He got a walk at every stop and was surprised to feel how warm it was getting. When we left home on Sat. ... read more

Karen and I left Maine and made it as far south as Carlisle Pennsylvania. We stayed at the Carlisle Barracks Army base which is a sort of living museum and the site of the US Army war college. After a comfortable night we did our morning workout in the same gymnasium where the Olympian; Jim Thorpe trained when he was a student at the Carlisle Indian school. The old building had been beautifully restored with historic photographs of early 20th-Century students lining the walls. We had a good workout but hardly felt Olympian when we left. Carlisle Barracks was a major surprise for us. A wonderful place with friendly people, good location and most importantly a bowling alley where Karen and I each played four games. I keep hitting the Boston pocket and my hook has ... read more

The sat nav had directed us to Mount Vernon, the housing estate, which worried us because we could have been anywhere in VA at this point. Luckily, when we reprogrammed the sat nav to take us to "Mount Vernon- George Washington's House" we realised it was just around the corner. We parked the car and headed into the visitor centre for some food. After tucking into a pizza, we made our way into the gardens of Mount Vernon. The estate is huge, with gardens either side of the mansion, as well as a big bowling green out front. George Washington's tomb is also on the estate. We made our way up to the mansion, passed one of the gardens and also a privy. We arrived at the mansion grounds where a staff member offered us a ... read more

Since we began blogging we’ve been proud that we produced our blogs in a timely fashion. We began writing this blog in the fall of 2014 and promptly got side tracked with a busy life. Personally we had mixed emotions about Merry Jo accepting a job in Baltimore because it would mean we were working in different cities and we had never done that before….nor had we wanted to. Dave would be 40 minutes away in Virginia so we thought we could make it work. Sadly, what we didn’t know at the time was Dave’s job would end shortly after MJ went to Baltimore, his next job would take him to Newtown, PA and then to a job in Oklahoma City, OK all while MJ continue to work in Baltimore. We accepted the jobs so we ... read more

OK - this trip is real now - because there is a blog entry! The Weavers and the Crofts are getting ready to vacation in Hawaii. First time there for all of us, and we've been planning for months now. We have lots of activities scheduled, with our first one starting at 3am our first morning there! I'll try to stay as current as possible with the blog, posting each evening - which, with the 6 hour time difference for most of our friends and family on Easter Daylight Savings Time, will be more like the next morning. I encourage everyone to leave messages, comments, etc. It makes it more fun when we know someone is actually reading the entries. Aloha.... read more

One planet. Seven continents. One hundred nighty five recognizable countries. Over a million places to see, but as everyone knows, a limited time to do it all. So this is the beginning. I want to see the world, as many people do, and I have already seen lots of it. I've been to Brazil, China, Japan, France and a few other countries when I was younger and I plan to go to many more. So here I've decided to document my travels, (past present and future). Here is where I will write all the the details I have from my travels and share all the great memories I have made and will make. This will be my up to date, high tech and super hip travel journal where I will visit all the X'd marked spots ... read more

Since this was going to be my first hiking experience, I didn't know what to expect. I was travelling to the Patapsco Valley State Park, in Cantonsville; a few miles outside of Baltimore. I boarded a local bus that took me to Hammonds Ferry road and then another one that took me close to Cantonsville. From there on it was a walk of a couple of kilometres, up to Hilton, the place where this park was located. It was a warm and sunny day. Once I reached the place, I had a look at a rough map. There were many trails available; but the one that caught my attention was the Forest Glen trail. This trail would take me down the mountains, across a couple of railway tracks, to the Patapso river. A little while after ... read more
