Clarkston, Georgia to Columbia, Maryland—Wednesday and Thursday, May 7 and 8, 2014 Our plans for this trip were to drive Rosie II to the DC area and visit with our Aunt who had been in and out of the hospital repeatedly, in the last couple of months, with heart problems and also to visit with my daughter and son-in-law that live near our Aunt. We planned to store Rosie II while we traveled and leave for the cruise from the Dulles Airport. All sounds good on paper, but as we were packing to leave, we got a call from my daughter that informed us that our Aunt had died and that her funeral was to be on Friday the 9th. So, we shifted into high gear to leave earlier than we planned. We spent the night ... read more

Geo: 38.1192, -76.3742If you saw my blog from yesterday, the picture showed some nasty clouds. Sheila and I walked to Cocomo's in Deltaville for dinner. It poured for about 10 minutes while we were in there, and then it was beautiful the rest of the night. We headed out of Deltaville this morning around 6:15. We sailed for about an hour with 10-12 knot winds, then the winds dropped to about 6-8 knots so we were only going about 2.5-3.0 knots. So we motor sailed pretty much the rest of the way. It was still an awesome day to be on the water. The seas were flat and you could see forever. We pulled into Point Lookout Marina around 3:15 pm. This marina is on the north side of the Potomac. We had not been there in at ... read more

As always, I had a late start today. I finally left Syracuse around 3pm and drove till about 10pm. Tomorrow is more driving and maybe a quick stop along the way. So far the forecast is calling for rain all day which always makes for a fun driving day. The weather should be clear for the rest of the trip.... read more

We were ready to get cruising on our new boat, but sadly it was not meant to be. The snow was coming down quite hard in Maryland and the forecast is for even more tomorrow. The boat is in winter storage up on the land in what they call dry storage. You can see all the boats in nice neat rows. There are literally hundreds of boats in this storage yard, just waiting for the warm weather. So, it seems that we must yield to mother nature and wait for the promise of spring yet to come. Driving around, you can see that this part of the Chesapeake Bay is really quite picturesque. I guess we should just enjoy the beautiful winter wonderland-like scenes. It is really quite rural in this area with farms, barns and ... read more

Ocean City The official term is high recaller. I like to have an official term for things. It means I remember my dreams and sleep light. In other words, I’m always the first one awake. Today I want to make the most of it though and sneak out before the day breaks as it were. Sadly, everyone else is quite a heavy sleeper, which rather takes the fun out of the sneaking part. Outside the day is already warming up nicely, with the comforting closeness of air you find in a greenhouse, though sadly lacking the smell of tomatoes. I flip flop across the road and up to the boardwalk, eyeballing people suspiciously as I pass. What are they doing up and about at this time? This is my time of the day. The boardwalk has ... read more

BACK IN U.S.A Over the holidays I expected to stay in Vietnam. There was a meditation class I had hoped to attend. That could not happen. With no other plans, I thought of going home for a couple of weeks. Once I was headed that way, I felt my time in Vietnam was done. "Something" told me I was ready to leave. I had a wonderful stay, yet most advantages were behind me, and the drawbacks (every situation has at least a few) would continue. There were no major problems, but the joy was not what it had been. I leave mentioning some recent memorable moments. At school I walked down the hall and noticed a whiff of incense. Another teacher nearby said yes, there’s the prayer room. I thought he was jokin... read more

I have gone back to school to get my Mates license. I will be spending the next two years between classes in Baltimore and working on Tugboats in the NorthEast. I will come out on the other end with my 1600 ton Mate of Towing License then get my Masters of Towing. I am attending classes at the Maritime Institute of Technologies And Graduate Studies, MITAGS, and obtaining my sea time aboard The Vane Brothers tug boats. The first three weeks of class we learned what to expect when we get underway and also all the ways we can loose limbs, burn up in a fire, drown, and die from hypotherma too! I had a two week "vacation" at home waiting on the Coast Guard to issue my documents, thanks to the governmment shutdown, and now ... read more

North America » United States » Maryland » Emmitsburg October 23rd 2013

Tuesday 22ndOctober 2013 Washington DC – Pennsylvania Fine and overcast – 15c We disconnected our home and departed Cherry Hill about 9am, bound for Gettysburg National Military Park Museum in Maryland. En route we happened to notice a sign leading to the Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial in a small town called Emmitsburg. The National Emergency Management training facility is here. After passing security and leaving our IDs at the main gate they allowed us in, visitors passes attached. There are two memorials – one commemorating all the US firefighters who died on duty between the years 1981 and the present. It was opened by Ronald Reagan. A brass plaque for each year is placed around a taller monument with an eternal flame. All names and States are listed on the plaque which is placed on a stone ... read more
