You’d think I’d be used to queuing up through Immigration by now. But there’s queues, and then there’s QUEUES and Hawaii wins the medal for having the longest. I guess being on a plane that was several hours late arriving and coinciding with the arrival of three other planes stuffed to the gills with passengers seeking entry to a small island archipelago didn’t help. Add to that arriving in the middle of a government shut-down with many security staff effectively working unpaid and you had a perfect recipe for chaos. Which is what we got ... The Immigration Hall could barely contain the volume of passengers. The barriers snaked up and down and left to right, filtering us through to a central area with automated fingerprint scanners and cameras. Slowly, slowly we crept along and, just ... read more

We used the HOHO trolleys to get us out and about in Hawaii. So many Japanese visitors came to the island that they were provided with dedicated trolleys in their own language so we had to ensure we got the right one! The Japanese may not have won the island during the war but they seem to have occupied it by stealth now, as there were very many of them on the island. Again, our online voucher had to be exchanged for proper tickets but it was a very pleasant and relatively short walk to T-Galleria, an upmarket shopping mall, where we were able to do this. One counter assistant was trying very hard to help a gentleman with limited English and a rather loud Hawaiian shirt who was clearly entering into the holiday spirit. Several ... read more

Lazy Morning this morning a relaxing breakfast overlooking Waikiki Beach - hard to handle but someone has to do it. Wandered around and did some window shopping before heading to the Hard Rock Café to see the kids perform again. The just keep getting better. Restaurant not packed but those that were there really enjoyed the performance. Then it was off to the Ala Moana Shopping Centre for their final performance. This was the longest they played and probably the best they played. They generally start with the two anthems and this time we had someone near us singing our anthem. The crowd were quite interactive this time which was good. Then we wandered around the shopping centre - well part of it. It was huge and a strange setup. Some of the shops faced inside ... read more

This morning was spent walking about Kailua-Kona before catching our flight to Honolulu. Interesting fact the Hawaiian Ironman triathlon is run on the Big Island - in fact it starts and finishes just outside our hotel. We actually covered a lot of the bike/run course yesterday on our bus tour. Must say it would be hard going. It is due to be run in October this year and already you could see what looked like people training for the swim and bike legs. A cruise shipped came into dock this morning so we watched them bring boat after boat of people ashore either for day tours or a quite wander around the place. A very relaxed place reminded us of Key West or an older Port Douglas. We enjoyed a casual stroll around town before flying ... read more

Undoubtably, she will ask me today, “So, how does it feel to have a 19 yr old daughter?” My response will be - “Beautiful, it feels beautiful”. She came into this world 19 yrs ago today with so much fire and spice, it seemed to set the tone for her path. I often look at Rio and have said on countless occasions, “how did I ever give birth to you!” It’s become a joke at times but the truth of the matter is - Rio has always been the person I wished I could have been growing up. Our relationship has been shaped by life circumstances and I have always been conscious of Rio’s presence. It’s hard to miss it, she’s got this forceful nature that barges right into your heart ❤️ As I think back ... read more

Today was a day that goes down in our history books. Hector and Christie picked us up at 7:30 am to go snorkeling. In our minds snorkeling is in a calm bay with bright sparkling tropical fish but boy were in for a whole other adventure! We headed out into the sea in Hector’s boat named La Carmen, after his sister. It gave me a sense of pride seeing our Captain in his element. Hector is the perfect example of someone following their dreams. We have known one another for close to 37 years so it’s really nice for me to see him here living the life. As we headed out into the ocean we passed people rowing, chartered fishing and dive boats, catamarans and even a boat named RIO in the harbor. I don’t think ... read more

Sunny and warm 77°F It's 7am as we dock in Honolulu. We're here until 11pm so we have plenty of time. Our alarm is set for 7:30 and , while Karen gets up, I allow her to get ready before me and stay in bed another 20 minutes. Then it's up for our usual breakfast. It's almost 9am and the ship appears empty. Few people are in the buffet and we relax out by the pool. That is, until Mom decides to call Queenie. "It's just a quick call", she says. I know there is no such thing and fear we're going to be stuck here for some time. I set my phone timer for 5 minutes as she dials but as I predicted, the timer just rings and rings while Karen continues to talk and ... read more

Day 15 We had originally planned to go to Pearl Harbour but the hour and a half journey there and then back again plus that neither of us had it high on our priority list we decided against it. Today was going to be a chill day. We started with a beach walk down to the marina. Off the shore at one of the beaches we were hoping to snorkel at was a boat that looked like it was sinking. The coast guard was out and they were going to clear the beach soon. We walked nabbed towards our hotel with a quick swim but the beach had lots of rocks but not ones that attracted cool fish and it was wavy and not much to be seen so we headed back to the hotel. We ... read more

Day 16 Our last day in Hawai'i ? and I wasn't feeling the best. I was still swaying from the boat or the rum, couldnt really tell to be honest ? I was struggling so I packed the suitcases and had a shower. Kym was keen to go back to the Hilton and find their other pools, I wasn't keen on getting there but agreed, the pool would be nice. The hotel next door had a sign saying Dole Whip which is a pineapple gelato (probably the best description for them) They were yummo and I felt a bit better. It also had a sign saying poolside bar 3rd floor... well that's just an open invitation to use their pool isn't it? ? So we swam and I did feel better. Kym wanted to surf so ... read more

Day 14 The hostel provided a continental breakfast. Toast, oats, mini muffins and waffles, oh and coffee and juice. Today was a shopping day. Originally I wanted to go to one of the outlet malls but I also wanted to go to Hot Topic , Nordstrom and another Ross which were all at the Ala Moana Mall and Walmart was near by too. This was quite a big mall but as it was outside so inbetween shops it was hot. I'm not much of a shopper unless it's op shops but I wanted a new handbag and a backpack for work plus we love Hot Topic. In the middle of the mall they had a entertainment so we got to see some more Hawaiian dancing. Picked up a Guess handbag for $50!! For lunch we tried ... read more
