Day 14
The hostel provided a continental breakfast. Toast, oats, mini muffins and waffles, oh and coffee and juice.
Today was a shopping day. Originally I wanted to go to one of the outlet malls but I also wanted to go to Hot Topic , Nordstrom and another Ross which were all at the Ala Moana Mall and Walmart was near by too. This was quite a big mall but as it was outside so inbetween shops it was hot. I'm not much of a shopper unless it's op shops but I wanted a new handbag and a backpack for work plus we love Hot Topic. In the middle of the mall they had a entertainment so we got to see some more Hawaiian dancing. Picked up a Guess handbag for $50!!
For lunch we tried a spicy ahi poke. If you haven't tried this do it. It's raw fish but oh my gosh it is delicious. I wish we had tried this earlier it was so good. I mean really really good.
We picked up some things from the local supermarket. I didn't want to pay $7.50 for 2 minute noodles on the plane so we
got some cheese and meats and a few other things. The supermarket we went to was quite upmarket, you could purchase a beer and even lunch to eat there. One could shop and one could drink ?
I did notice that the prices at any of the supermarkets are expensive in Hawai'i. 2 litres of milk was $5, a bag of mixed lettuce was $6, a small bag of carrots $4, strawberries $5 a small punnet, even pineapple which is grown on the island was expensive. Mind you candy was cheap... alcohol was also cheap. A bottle of spirits would set you back around $15 to $20... wine was about the same. I'm always fascinated by the price of things when in different counties. If I were to live in Hawai'i I'd make sure I had a veg garden and a Costco membership.
We grabbed cheap hotdogs from the local ABC (they are all local..) and headed out to a Ghost Tour in Downtown Honululu. Hawaiian's are very spiritual and there are many burial sites on the island (a huge burial site for 1000's of smallpox victims where high rise buildings are built over was just one of
the places we visited. The royal palace and a few other places had stories of ghost sitings. A very haunted place and i'd love to explore this more and learn more about the dark history of the place. What we learned was fascinating and our guide was a great storyteller.
Still a bit hungry we stopped back arty the ABC and grabbed a Mushabi each.. its kind of like sushi but made with spam.. yep spam ? Basically it was a hunk of sushi rice with spam on top wrapped with one piece of seaweed around the middle.. usually a breakfast food ? It was filling but needed soy ... a little on the bland side for me but Kym liked it.
And that's the day done!
