Day 3 A real lazy morning, check out at 12, so we took our time doing a whole lot of nothing. The White Sands Hotel, where we stayed was budget accommodation but to be honest it was great. The rooms were clean, small kitchen; stove, microwave, blender, toaster, coffee maker... it had a decent bathroom and a comfy bed. The air cond worked well although it was very loud. Each room had its own lanai and ours led out to the pool. The pool wasnt anything like the Hilton but there was always a lounge chair available.. unlike the Hilton where you had to get in early to get a good spot. The staff were friendly and once we checked out we had them hold our luggage while we grabbed a quick bite to eat; Oscar ... read more

Day 2 Sleep in til 10am, coffee on our lanai with a paste like substance I like to call breakfast (quinoa flakes with sesame).. quick dip in pool, walk to the beach via cutting through a hotel... pretty sure they would have no idea of you were a guest or not if you decided to swim in their pool *note to self if we book accomdation without a pool.. use anothers hotels pool. A number of people recommend the food at the Cheesecake Factory and it didnt dissapoint. It was delicious and filling.... and ill be back for more cheescake before we go for sure! We shared a cocktail served in a pineapple with 3 different rums .. mmm... Rum ? Walk back to hotel to get ready to catch the local bus to the Aloha ... read more

Journey begins We changed our flights as it was an option last minute to fly to Sydney rather than Melbourne. It gave is an hour extra sleep in time .. which is important when you are spending a whole day on a plane. When we got to Adelaide airport we saw all the Crows fans waiting to board and we both thought it would have been a fun flight if we did go to Melbs first. Even though we had booked through a travel agent and having flown to the US and other overseas destinations where you check your bags in once, we found out that we had to get our bags off at Sydney and then catch the bus (and pay!!) to get to the international airport. We had 5 hours so it wasn't a ... read more

Its about a 30 minute flight between Lihue and Honolulu. Our pilot decided to be tour guide, over the intercom he explained about Pearl Harbour, the mountains and even the weather. Oahu was receiving some vog from the volcano on the Big Island creating a light haze over the city. Honolulu traffic was as expected, slow. It took about an hour to get to our hotel. Dropped our bags off and walked the 2 blocks to Waikiki Beach. The beach looked just like the photos, I thought as I walked the busy stretch of sand. It was warm, the ocean breeze pleasant and the backdrop of Diamond Head was just plain great. The Royal Hawaiian is the world famous big pink hotel on Waikiki. Thats where we stopped to have an afternoon drink. It’s Mai-Tai bar ... read more

Traveling day from the Big Island to Waikiki.. Woke at 4:30am odd for a "need to be out of here by 6am" to get to the airport.. We were traveling well and had put through two loads of washing (as required by the apartment).. Had some breaky and said farewell to the most amazing place to stay - don't go think this was a modern abode - no, think of Nan's old wooden kitchen cupboards where the drawer falls down when you pull it out and the little vent circles in the doors.. BUT it was PERFECT.. would stay there again in a heartbeat.. We even looked at property here - the apartment above us was for sale - just under 500K.. anyone want to buy in - 8% giving you one month a year in ... read more

I had heard some compelling things about snorkeling at Hanauma Baypreserve, and it did not disappoint. Was a very memorable experience. They do mandate that you watch a 9 minute video prior to your entry to the area as to best understand how to help preserve the state of the reef in its waters. At the time of my visit, the preserve is closed on Tuesdays, so if you are planning a visit there, check in advance to make sure they are planning to be open on the day of your visit. I was staying in Waikiki and it turns out The Bus #22 leaves from Waikiki about every 30 minutes and you get there and back for USD $2.50 each way. I found their buses clean, nice passengers, and on time, its one of the ... read more

Our last day on Waikiki, sleep in and slow start. Starbucks will miss my usual order of 2 Venti Lattes for Rosemary each morning. I'll miss having a coffee place less than 200 metres from my bedroom. What to do today, and very little was the answer. We had yet to visit Kahala Mall, but had been past it a few times on the green trolley so this was the destination for today. It has been really hto and humid the last week so full air conditioning seemed like a nice option for a hot afternoon. What a difference to AlaMoana shopping centre. AlaMoana is huge open plan, and encompasses life from all ends of the spectrum. Usually there seems to be about 10% Caucasian anywhere we have been, today at Kahala the percentage went up to ... read more

A very slow start to the day as Martin has just made a huge discovery. He was happily drinking Coors light beer thinking that light meant 2.5% alcohol volume like Fosters light Ice, Hahn Premium Light or Cascade Light which is what he drinks at home. Almost water, he can sit on these all day. However Coors light is 4.6% and after a happy hour or three at Lulu's, plus a six pack in the evening over cards and tea, his judgement and inhibition was all gone by 10pm so heavy beers, shots and whiskey followed until 11pm and curfew. Suffice it to say today he is a little worse for wear and activity had not commenced until 12-30pm today. The Honolulu zoo is almost opposite Lemon Road on Kahalulu Ave, so we wandered over the ... read more
